Taurine on/off cycle

This paper basically discusses how about 1.5g of Taurine (human equivalent) protects rat testes from some of the markers of damage cased by Deca (testicular atrophy, damage to sperm, destruction of cells etc). Deca increases inflammatory proteins in the testes and depletes glutathione (anti-oxidant); taurine boosts glutathione levels and helps combat the inflammatory cascade. We would therefore assume that recovery would be easier and endogenous test levels would rebound quicker. Bear in mind, however, that this is in rats (which sometimes don't react quite like humans, physiologically speaking), and they're using a small dose of Deca (140mg).

Amelioration of nandrolone decanoate-induced testicular and sperm toxicity in rats by taurine: effects on steroidogenesis, redox and inflammatory cascades, and intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
Ahmed MA.

The wide abuse of the anabolic steroid nandrolone decanoate by athletes and adolescents for enhancement of sporting performance and physical appearance may be associated with testicular toxicity and infertility. On the other hand, taurine; a free β-amino acid with remarkable antioxidant activity, is used in taurine-enriched beverages to boost the muscular power of athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of the possible protective effects of taurine on nandrolone decanoate-induced testicular and sperm toxicity in rats. To achieve this aim, male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into four groups and administered either vehicle, nandrolone decanoate (10mg/kg/week, I.M.), taurine (100mg/kg/day, p.o.) or combination of taurine and nandrolone decanoate, for 8 successive weeks. Results of the present study showed that taurine reversed nandrolone decanoate-induced perturbations in sperm characteristics, normalized serum testosterone level, and restored the activities of the key steroidogenic enzymes; 3β-HSD, and 17β-HSD. Moreover, taurine prevented nandrolone decanoate-induced testicular toxicity and DNA damage by virtue of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. This was evidenced by taurine-induced modulation of testicular LDH-x activity, redox markers (MDA, NO, GSH contents, and SOD activity), inflammatory indices (TNF-α, ICAM-1 levels, and MMP-9 gene expression), intrinsic apoptotic pathway (cytochrome c gene expression and caspase-3 content), and oxidative DNA damage markers (8-OHdG level and comet assay). In conclusion, at the biochemical and histological levels, taurine attenuated nandrolone decanoate-induced poor sperm quality and testicular toxicity in rats.

Cool! Now if only taurine didn't taste like soap... :-p

So is this testicular damage unique to deca, or do other AAS have a similar effect?

This is what a mate said about taurine in general:

It seems to prevent the harm caused by excess aromatase activity (and oestrogen) in the testes, which is believed to be the cause of testicular atrophy.

Whether it helps other arms of the HPTA recovery process is (as yet) unknown. But as most harms appear to derive from the effects of inflammatory/oxidative processes, there's a chance they might be researched in future.

As an antioxidant, cell membrane stabiliser, and (with NAC) booster of glutathione and glutathione enzymes - which is not really new news. The newness is just that they've been experimenting more widely.

Anyway there's a pretty wide-range of benefits for AAS users as you might expect - from preventing free-radical damage to the testes, to the same on endothelial cells in the cardiovascular network, and in reducing inflammatory damage to hair follicles.

Whether a diet already laden with nutritious foods and antioxidants like NAC shows additional benefits from taurine has not been investigated. The studies are essentially just proof of model.

Best dosing schedule is probably multiple times a day. Half-life is about 2.5 hours so 3x per day, or taken with shakes, would be a good idea.

As for uses outside bodybuilding, yes tons. Mostly focused on the brain (as it passes the BBB easily). Alzheimers/dementia is the latest focus. It's also believed to have an anxiolytic effect (reduces anxiety), and it stimulates GABAa (inhibitory) neuroreceptors.

No harms really, it's seems to be pretty benign. The LD50 of a single dose in rodents is greater than 5g/kg.

Daz I always wondered is there any medical difference between having amino acids in pure form on their own (bcaa's, taurine etc) in terms of their benefits, as opposed to just getting them in protein like meat etc?

I believe the supplement company's would like you to think there is, if eating a balanced diet that might suffice for most people..

Just a little food for thought in relation to the inevitable bloat from oral compounds, have you considered mega-dosing taurine during the cycle?

A few studies cite the beneficial aspects it contributes to the cardiovascular system and also in reference to osmoregulation within the body.

Just a thought.

very interesting daz........

Ive never suffered from testicular atrophy during cycles many of which feature nandrolone, but i did suffer from an

energy drink addiction (1 minimum a day). Could the uneffected testicle be because of the taurine??

I have how ever quit the energy drinks and the AAS for the time being. It will be interesting if start a nandrolone cycle

without taurine later this year, maybe my nuts will shrink:unsure:
