Hey!

I'm a 21 year old Uni student currently studying at Otago, originally from the Hawkes Bay. I've been going to the gym on and off for the last three years, but haven't really made much progress due getting to absorbed with study periodically.

I would really like to one day compete in a bb competition, but I really think in order to do this I really need a personal trainer to guide/motivate me. When it comes to the gym, I really am a noob, in every sense of the term, from exercises to nutrition.

If anyone knows has any advice on potential personal trainers, or about bodybuilding for newbies it would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hey Pharmacista!

I'd always suggest getting a trainer as you get up to the pointy end of competition prep, but at this point, there's a lot you can teach yourself as Lumberjacked says. And of course, we're happy to help you too. There's a heap of really knowledgeable guys on here.

So let's start from the beginning...

What does your diet look like at the moment?

In terms of training, you can't go wrong with a simple 4-day split:

Mon - Back/Biceps (because everyone else in the gym will be doing chest)

Tue - Chest/Triceps

Wed - rest

Thurs - Legs

Fri - Shoulders/Abs

How does that sound? Do you need us to flesh it out a bit more?

Thanks Pseudonym!

I would say my diet is pretty standard. The average three meals a day. I don't normally eat in sweet foods.

Breakfast: 3-4 pieces of toast.

Lunch: Two sandwiches (ham).

Dinner: usually around 300g red/white meat, green vegetables and potato

I'm pretty skinny. When I am going to the gym 3/4 times a week I usually take a mass gainer (mutant mass) twice a day, once at night and once after the gym. I have just finished exams though I haven't been in ages. Hence posting on this forum for a fresh start.

Everything I have done up till now regarding the gym and nutrition, is just what I thought worked for me, that's why I really need some advide, I have no idea what I'm doing. -_-

OK, your diet on two serves of mass gainer daily is going to be vastly different to your diet without. TBH, without it, you're not eating much calorie-wise. And even with it, your protein intake is probably pretty low.

Have you tried using an app like MyFitnessPal? That will help you track your calories, and then we can make suggestions accordingly.

You need more food then that what you are currently eating. If you are stuck for meal ideas . I would suggest going on to YouTube and type in flat broke bodybuilding meals . Where you will get some good ideas for your meals.plus the meals would be ideal cost wise since you are a student
