Anyone else get the odd nosebleed when lifting. I've had one last 2 times deadlifting big. Only happens deadlifting, BP is normal. But I do know it get crazy high lifting big. I don't normally get any outside lifting. I do think I'm bad ass AF when it happens tho

This. My eyes used to turn pink and sit whenever I hit depth until I changed my squat form so this dosent happen. Used to be funny looking at my face in the mirror seeing this happen lol.

I get these pretty regularly bro.

My blood pressure is fine in general but tightness and intra-abdominal pressure etc have become a big part of my lifting recently so this definitely adds to it.

Usually get them in sessions when it's really hot or I'm dehydrated and still gotta lift heavy.

Have had them on Squats, Bench and Deads before.

Nothing to worry about imo.

Just a lil annoying if you get it on set 1 or 2 and still have multiple other heavy sets to do lol

Your blood pressure when you are at the mall on a Sunday afternoon and decide to get a test is different to when you are pushing/pulling a near max weight mid rep.

Lol definitely.

My blood pressure goes sky high when lifting I would say.

Always go red/purple as face wise and come away with burst vessels across shoulders, traps, chest etc, eyes on a bad day haha.

Read a study somewhere that said the systolic reading, the pressure of the blood against the vessel walls when the heart pumps, in some powerlifters during max attempts went as high as 350-400.

I did listen to a podcast that said it's worse in geared lifters, I think unless u have a pre existing condition your fine. It adds to the thrill of lifting for me, a element of risk. Everything is all health and safety these days

That would make sense as you have the added pressure of the equipment on your body rather than just the pressure from the bar plus the pressure you can produce with your own breathing etc.

Especially with extremely tight suits etc and at the bottom of the squats you have to hold as tight as possible to make sure the groove stays right and the force produced by the suit actually travels into pushing the bar up.

I wonder if the repeated high blood pressure of heavy lifting has any negative effects on the body ?

Does it make you more likely to have higher blood pressure at rest ? Does it cause your blood vessels to toughen and not be as elastic ? Numerous questions could be raised about it but unsure if there is any solid evidence or research on the effects.

I'd lift heavy nonetheless lol

Lol are we talking about the same gear here bro ?

Daz only ever posts about steroids, I was under the impression Ken was talking about geared lifters as in squat suits, bench shirts etc hence my references to suits etc.

Blood pressure and Gear (Steroids) is a whole different discussion.

think daz mentioned it in regard to lifting heavy at the time, cant remember exactly

It was effect of AAS on blood vessels and blood pressure and the irreversible, chronic issues that are the root of deleterious cardiac remodelling (be it from arterial or myocardial stiffening, fibrotic, apoptotic or hypertrophic causes)...

There we go. Daz what are your thoughts on effect of extremely high spikes in BP caused by lifting very heavy weight regularly. If im spiking enough to get a nose bleed or get covered in burst capillaries, am i doing anything bad to my heart?

I've just attended an evening with a NZ cardiologist, wishing I'd been aware of your point prior to him asking for end of lecture questions...

I might assume a short term rise in BP might not cause the negative adaptation seen in long term AAS users, unless the heart was defective to start with...

I asked my cardiologist this (hamish Charles) and said temporary peaks aren't of concern. It's prolonging periods that causes morphological changes of the heart.

See, that really surprises me. I would have thought that if the blood pressure is high enough to cause nose bleeding, it's probably high enough to damage other quite important parts of you, too. The blood vessels in the brain, for instance, are pretty fine.

Do you think your cardiologist fully appreciated just how much pressure we're talking about here?

Yup he realized how much pressure.

My blood vessels in eye were burst at the time of appointment.

If you have weaken blood vessels, narrow arteries etc (genetic conditions) you would at risk of something more serious.

The human body is a bit more robust than most think. I have never heard of someone dieing mid lift and if there was other factors would be playing a role I.e. Use of anabolics etc.

It is shown that altheles in strength based sports do have more significant LVH (left ventricule hypertrophy). I did a post on this not that long along and Daz had a few posts on the topic.

I think both of us were seeing a cardiologist at the time.
