as someone that has done bb , power lifting and strongman training, do you think the different ways of trainng have changed your shape look? could you lean down and jump straight back on stage?

Yeah I'm def thicker through the chest and shoulders now than when I was just bodybuilding. I think legs are more complete now rather than just quad dominant.

Unsure if waist is bigger though

Be interesting to see what I would look like at 4% bf but that's not on the cards just yet man

Not everyone squats low bar wide feet stance. You find what works for you.

This position is pretty comfortable for me. There's good rythym and no grind point. It's similar to Eric Lillibridge jr world record squat holder

Mid feet stance, mid bar. I find it helps my mobility and depth

My hands go right out to the weights to help take pressure off my forearms which I have constant battles with due to the torn forearm tendon injury I have never recovered from and part of the reason I've had to leave strongman alone this year.

yeah was gonna say similar to eric lilliebridge squat, i try to squat like this sometimes cos cant argue it works for him and looks cool but dont think my leverages like it, really hard to get parallel for even though the ROM is shortened a bit with wide stance

  • 2 weeks later...

MRI scans have come thru and the diagnosis is protuding L4/L5 and L5/S1 discs in my lower back. It's not a minor injury but I can recover from it. I'm working with a sports specialist who works with the Chiefs and the NZ Olympic Rowing squad so I feel I'm in good hands.

I'm also working with Australian Powerlifting coach Thomas Lilley now.

He has given me really useful feedback on all 3 lifts. I will have to wait a while to get stuck into Squats and Deadlifts but yesterday I made a last minute entry into the Bench only section of the GPC Waikato champs.

The minor tweaks I made really felt like they made a difference and I managed to put up a 222.5kg bench press at 118.0kg with zero prep which was a PB and a GPC NZ u125kg record. Second in overall biggest GPC NZ bench ever after Dan Hollidays 240 and I believe it's the biggest in all the NZ Feds history for Raw u125/u120kg so I'm stoked. Especially as I feel there's Still more in the tank. 500lb / 227.5kg is looking realistic by end of year so I'm not so depressed about my back injury.

Had proper bench coaching before big H? I'm just been a muscle it up kind of guy for years lol. Makes such a big diff

A little bit here and there. Never been my real focus but I'm sure be a worthwhile investment of time. Sure is working for you man.

1st night on my programme designed by my new Coach Thomas Lilley from Aussie. The goal is 227.5kg bench in 7 weeks at GPC nationals. Will start to introduce squats and deadlifts in a few weeks if my back feels up to it although won't be pushing hard as I will only be lifting bench only at Nationals. Working with the best rehab Physio in Hamilton - Peter Hunt - as well as Dr Chris Milne Back specialist who works with the Olympic team so hopefully they can work miracles

I decided to try squat again tonight as back not too bad today

Didn't push too hard

Just trialled my new setup which is designed to take the load off my lower back discs

-Medium-wide stance

-Break at hips first then straight down

-Push knees out to the side as I descend

-Push through my feet on way up as if if trying to pull the floor apart with my feet

Still need to work on my mobility to move to low bar and adjust hand position to take pressure off forearms but that will come next time

Warmup sets were pretty cruisey

Did 4 sets of 230x5

Still plenty left In the tank. Feel confident to move forward next session. Can't really complain, no real back pain and depth was pretty solid.

Still a bit dubious on the deadlifts though. Might do some medium weight later this week

Bodyweight was 120.7kg tonight

3rd set

First deadlift session post injury

Just worked up to 260kg for 2

New style, more mental cues than anything.  Have brought my feet in a bit and hands also in, but that doesn't seem to work as they catch my quads at the top but they were both surprisingly easy, first one shot off the ground.

Im visualising that my arms are like steel anchors, and all I'm doing is leveraging with my hammies off the ground to start.  Then once I'm at the knees I'm clenching my butt and trying to push through as aggressive as I can which gives me enough speed to lock out my back.  Chest up higher and head up all the way through the lift.

Few more sessions before I start to add weight

Dropped back and did 2 sets of 200 x 5

Finished on a balls to the wall set of 200 x 10

A bit of assistance work with pull-ups, lat pulldowns and barbell rows.

Back was feeling a bit sore by the end, scared I had pushed it a bit hard but it felt mint half an hour post workout.

Hammies were screaming this morning which means I must have done my job well haha
