Powerlifters are just failed bodybuilders

Saw this post on Facebook last night where some guy is claiming 80% of powerlifters are just failed bodybuilders. Kinda made me laugh but got me thinking. What makes a failed bodybuilder? What level do you need to reach to say you've made it? Better yet, could you say 80% of bodybuilders are to weak to be powerlifters? I have to say I started out bodybuilding because everyone else was doing it but I moved to powerlifting because bodybuilding was the same boring shit day in day out. Id sacrifice muscle size any day for raw strength. What are your reasons for choosing powerlifting over bodybuilding?

Mens physique aka mens bikini are failed bodybuilders.

No one can gift you a 900 raw total in powerlifting, but I see many gifted pro cards in bodybuilding.

At least in powerlifting and crossfit the true winner is the winner.

lol girl at my gym who competed in bikini at nzifbb nationals on weekend came 4th overall... Complaining to me yday that moe told her he woulda given her a pro card but she only been in the industry 6 weeks so has to wait... Industry? Wtf is this new word everyone calling it, wankers trying to polish a turd. It's competing. When ask her y do you want pro card she can't even answer it... Probably cause would look good on Facebook next to her name.

brainwashed idiots.

if you set out to do a bodybuilding Comp and decided you enjoy lifting heavy and hitting 1rm so changed to powerlifting because you enjoy it more, then to me that's a success because you have found what you enjoy doing. Not a failure.

Not many people want to strange themselves for weeks to months to be on stage for a handful on minutes in front of a crowd in nothing but budgie smugglers and fake tanned up it's definitely not the norm.

Training is the fun aspect. I don't think many would enjoy the contest prep. Powerlifting allows you to enjoy the fun part only! As does cross fit.

I'd agree with him... in the sense that most generic gym training to get bigger and stronger can loosely be called bodybuilding, and many powerlifters/crossfitters start off here before finding their true calling.

Does that make them a "failed" bodybuilder? I'd say more a disillusioned bodybuilder, or if I'm being cynical, an enlightened one.

Bodybuilding seems like a nightmare to me, know plenty that have done it and just turns them into grumpy, un-social goofs, I love lifting and looking decent but you couldn't pay me to switch codes, powerlifting is so sweet, eat big look tank and still enjoy life

LOL the amount of people I've hear about who have claimed moe has said this to them....

What does he mean by 'in the industry'? What does being in the bodybuilding 'industry' involve?

just need a fitness page or (athlete) or (ifbb pro) after your name on fb and talk up the right supplement shop i think thats the prerequisites to be in the industry

It would be a bold person to say anything like this!

Failure is just one way of working out how to do something better!

Personally I would like to think I can do a little of both, I enjoy strength and body building keeps me aesthetically more pleasing. Why can there not be a balance of both, why does one have to choose!

I'm a failed shotputter.

I remeber a guy at porirua city fitness around 1990, shot put trainee, what he could do overhead and speed wise was always shocking to see, wookie it must of been a great base especially for your joints, or is it just in the beard he had as well

It's a great base for alot of things. I could dunk a basketball at 6'4 and 130k. And I wasnt close to the likes of Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill.

I keep swapping so I guess I'm failing repeatedly....

I like the old skool ethos where you do whatever you like as suits, likes of Franco etc being elite BBers, but also competitive PLers and Strongmen. Bit like guys like Reuben De Jong, Wookie, Danny Nemani, Optimass, Quadzilla etc that swap between the iron codes (BBing/PLing/Oly lifting/Highland Games/Strongman etc).

  • 2 weeks later...

I think if you're in this for the long haul, you've got to change it up a bit. Otherwise, shit just gets boring!

agree - competing in both formats (bbing and powerlifting) has been a huge challenge over the last 12 months .. but I'm a lot better off in both sports having set the goals I did and just got too it.

You're the only one I know thats hit 3 formats in 12 months bro ... hard yards!! Plenty of bullshit poddypillders out there these days talking themselves up - but would crumble do a strength routine at moderate volume.
