Cheapest way to buy chicken?

I thought this would have been the subject of a million threads already, but I can't find them so here we go ...

I just got back to NZ after a stint overseas of no work and lots of fun (aka lots of expense), so I'm on very tight budget. So my question is, what do you reckon is the cheapest way to buy chicken? I know prices go up and down, but in general, what do you reckon would be cheapest on average?

Whole chicken and roast it at home, breast with skin on, thigh or any other specific cut, or a cooked bbq chicken from the supermarket, or cans of Chopchop or ......

DISCLAIMER: I'm unsure if this will be helpful or not.

I have found the cheapest place to get chicken here (Dunedin) is at Frozen direct,

I can pick up 2kgs for $20 year round, Granted not all the chicken has the skin removed. I have also heard approaching catering companies i.e bidvest can also yield some deals.

Just keep an eye out for specials at supermarkets,Can normally find it for $10-$12kg for skinless breasts. Cooking breast chicken at home has to the the best/cheapest imo

this, sometimes it helps to look around local butchers and stuff,  I get my breasts @ 10.99 a kg  all year round (skinless) and can get a box of frozen chicken (10 or 12 can't remember ) for about 50 bucks, they're tiny chicken though

can get for around $10 if you hunt around butchers for a deal otherwise wait for specials in the supermarkets but they don't go near as low.. more like $15 a kilo

Pak n Save have it every few weeks for around $12, sometimes $10. Just load the freezer up while its cheap and it will be on special again before you run out. Havent paid over $12 in a long time
