Who has experienced exertional headaches

Hey all. I have a question involving exertional headaches. I experienced my first one a few weeks ago while squatting and I'm curious to know if anyone else has had the not so great pleasure of these before. Was advised to rest a week or two then start into the cardio and take a few weeks off lifting. Have been doing cardio since and today I tried a lil bit of lifting after my cardio. I felt that tightening feeling in my head again so I stopped lifting before a headache came on.

Any ideas as to why I'm now being frowned upon by the lifting "gods" with these stupid headaches and how can I get past them as I'm getting bored just doing cardio and I'm missing lifting.

also I have been seen by my gp and blood pressure is normal.

advice please

I've had them before - I upped my salt/electrolyte intake and that helped.

It could be muscular - using traps too much when lifting and causing tightening - or to do with being dehydrated etc. But noone can really tell you as it depends on so many factors unique to you.

What do you think it could be?

At first i thought it was blood pressure issue but my resting bp is normal. Could be dehydration that caused the tightening today as I did a lil bit after a 4km jog. Who knows to be honest???? I'm hoping it all settles down as I'm missing my lifts. Maybe a massage might be in order to try loosen up my traps a bit

Try out the massage see if it helps. Does it feel like its muscular tightening? Or does it just seem to come out of nowhere?

Doing lots of exercise/sweating a lot as well as being health conscious and trying to "drink 2-3L of water a day" can be a recipe for drying yourself out - try adding salts/sugars to your foods and drinks to help replace electrolytes. Or getting sports drinks - powerades etc. Tastes good too.

I've had them before, got them on pretty much every workout for about 2 weeks. Only happened while I was on gear though and I just put it down to a sudden increase in bp. Only happened on the last rep or 2 on heavy sets. They are no fun though!

Try back your weights off a bit for a while and see how it goes

It feels like a tightening at the base of my skull then boom an excruciating headache hits out of no where. It could be hydration issue so will try guzzling more water through my day. Will go another 4 weeks of just cardio and hopefully it settles down

Had them a couple of years back and dam they are horrible. Feel like ya head us about to explode.

I had one at the gym once and then two days later while having a root and the closer I got to cumming the worse it got. Actually had to stop. The next day, the same thing happened. Ended up taking it easy (on both accounts) for about 2 weeks but have not had them since.

had these once or twice, lying ham curls seem to cause it for me, real random, something to do with my head being slightly below the rest of me while curling, maybe bp although my resting bp has always been not bad?

hasnt happened in a year or so though, cold water seemed to help

Have noticed this phenominon a few times with clients over the years.I  always send them along to thier GP to get everything checked out, but yeah each time the diagnosis is "an exertion headache" or "exercise induced headache". There seems to be no rhime or reason to its cause and you will find that certain exercises cause it to come on while others dont. I have one client that can do anything even leg presses or squats but the moment he performs a set of leg extensions these headaches come on, another client can perform any moving except skipping with a rope (running is fine for him).

Just an update on those exertional headaches I was experiencing, they have stopped - FINALLY!!!! I took 2 months off all lifting and just did light cardio which was incredibly boring but is much better than the headaches.

After the 2 month lifting holiday i am slowly working my way back into lifting under the guidance of my trainer and am starting to get my strength back. Big thanks to all that gave their advice on this topic as these headaches definately freaked me out

cheers. Beez
