How can we improve Gymnation?

hey man aint seen you on in a while either probably been like a year ! what was it that made you leave and then what motivated your return?

one thing that could have been handled way better is that the passwords didn't carry over to new site but don't think it's fair to say it's all just because the rebrand.

thats true though nzbb pine pollen crew seems to have been dying slowly over the past year and I know 1 member personally who has ditched it specifically because he didn't like the new site. i hope those lively characters will make a return.

on the bright side we still have our exclusive VIP member the one and only GymRat actively roaming the boards. also have been seeing heaps more new members jump on. with some luck those few original members will make a return soon enough.

I think quite a few made it here, but didnt stick around. Even in the last 5-6 weeks I reckon there has been a big drop off, mainly in the steriods forum, seems to be very few people posting atm but im not sure why??

eithere thre is another forum they're all discussing that stuff now or they've all suddenly decided to become natural? *preved*

I think a lot of it has to do with the harsh clampdown on dealing through PMs and the no sourcing rule. It was important for the dealers to maintain a presence on the steroid forums so that newbs would PM them asking them for sources. Now that is not allowed so there is no point in wasting time on answering noob questions LOL.

Stink if that has had a lot to do with it.  Also stink that people were here primarily for business reasons.

Not sure what else could have been done though.  If the forum became known as the 'go to' place for sourcing in NZ then it wouldn't take long for some vaguely associated sports person to get busted, court orders issued to Psuedo to release records, possible charges for Psuedo, and a thrilling TV3 special highlighting the procedure (following the style of journalism seen overseas).

Following the clampdown I'd say facebook is where the business is happening but it's harder for newbies to get instant online hookups (that there first contact).

Everyone who isn't a steroid novice sells it. Your already breaking the law using it so if someone comes and asks you for it everyone would go to their source and get it like they normally do and add a margin to it. That helps pay for their stuff and that's exactly how it works. So probably almost everyone on here who was using was selling.

there were so many member registrations but only a hand full of active posters, sure there are some people who just read but a decent percentage of those ppl are just looking for a source. There has to first be a demand before there can be a supply.

Ouch. :(

I don't know where to start in my reply to this, so here's a bunch of points which may or may not end up in a logical order.

First of all... Yep, our members aren't currently as active as they have been previously. No denying that. However, I don't think there's any one reason, but a whole heap of reasons which have all contributed.

Facebook is the major one. Before Facebook become so universal, all the banter that now happens on Facebook used to happen here. But as Facebook increased in popularity, people who had met on here became friends on Facebook, and started using that as their main platform for communication - leaving us alone in the cold.

That was already happening under NZBB, even before we rebranded to Gymnation. In fact, the shrinking audience was part of the reason we rebranded. For us to compete against Facebook, we have to offer features it can't. Under Gymnation, we have a software platform that allows future development, and a brand that is more attractive to sponsors to fund it.

The downside to this is that we literally had to recreate all the forum functions that had been standard in the old NZBB software. I would say we've rebuilt 90% of it the same as NZBB, but there are still differences, and some things that need fixing.

For example, NZBB would never log anyone out. This meant you could come back a year later, and still be logged in as a member - and counted in our daily stats. However, Gymnation logs people out every two weeks. This means members who were logged in, get logged out, don't bother to log back in, and therefore are not counted as returning members.

Or perhaps it's not quite so obvious now when you receive a PM. So new members don't see the they've been sent a welcome PM inviting them to introduce themselves.

These are tiny details, but they can make a huge difference. We'll be dealing to these as fast as we can fund them.

The clampdown on steroid dealing probably had an impact on a section of the community here. That's unfortunate, but as others have explained, we couldn't afford to become known as the marketplace for trading gear.

So is it the site layout? Well, I thought that (except for the front page) most of the layout on Gymnation is almost identical to NZBB. That was the intention. I've had lots of people say they think the new layout is an improvement. Obviously we can't please everyone, but if there's something you don't like, tell me! It's the only way I'll know...

Having said that, I am very aware that on many phones and tablets, navigating the site is rubbish. After Facebook, I would say this is probably the next biggest factor in our dip in visitors - a third of our members now browse this site from a mobile device. Getting this fixed is my top priority. We were very close to having a company sign up to sponsor the development of Gymnation Mobile, and it would have been amazing for them, for us, and for our members. Unfortunately, that didn't come to pass. So now we're looking for another company who will be equally amazing.

It's part of forum life that people come and go. And when people's friends go, they tend to go too. That's only natural. And it's happened continuously for the nearly 10 years I've been running NZBB/Gymnation.

The good news is, as Leeroid said, there's a number of new people who are really stepping up to fill the gap. And man, I appreciate it. (The hardest part about running a forum is the amount of energy it takes from you when it's not generating energy of its own.) You know who you are. Cheers, guys... it's much appreciated.

So... moving forward. Top priority is Gymnation Mobile. Any thoughts/suggestions/advice for this?

Hey Lumpy, was good to meet up again at the weekend old pal.... *biggrin*

Although I kinda agree with some of the points being mentioned, considering the amount of time and money Pseudo' has put in I think you've been quite harsh with your overall interpretation..

I have tried accessing via phone and have found it almost impossible with my fat fingers Lol.. So don't bother...

As what Leeroid said regards AAS and PM'ing that has been a contributing factor, although there was considerable discussion on AAS between persons with products to buy or sell, not all the information given out was correct. I did find compounds were promoted and misleading advise given when a particular product was unavailable, or a new one came onto the market..

What I do miss is the totally impartial contribution of Riccardo who graciously passed on his immense knowledge in the medical field to this forum, his loss is most unfortunate.. Without persons of his calibre interest will and has moved to other forums where a few intellectually gifted individuals still post good and impartial science..

There are new contributors posting good science Dinahlady comes to mind, we just need a few more... maybe you should return Lumpy...

Oh and bring back Tom.....!!!! *clapping*

I used to post on a dance music forum which was huggge, like posts in threads every few seconds etc, now you'd be lucky to get a couple of posts a day (I don't know, I stopped posting haha). Their problem = facebook. So it's likely the same here.

I think some of those comments are a bit harsh. But it does seem as tho people prefer a simple layout. I guess its just one of those things, coming into summer people are out doing stuff with the long days rather then sitting on computers too..

Hopefully people start to come back, as I have learnt a lot here
