Should elaborate on my day yesterday and do a full write up. I was pretty tired last night as I got back at 9pm from Auckland to Rotorua then got up at 2am to start work at 3am. Finished work at 12pm then slept from 1pm to 7pm lol! Anyway, here's my rundown of GPC Nationals 2014.

Thursday I didn't eat or drink anything in order to make weight for the 82.5kg weight class. I woke up at 87.9kgs and by 7pm that night I was down to 86.3kg after work. Work was pretty tough as I had no energy at all and all I could think of was water. At home, I filled up the bath with hot water and got a sweat going until 10pm when I got down to 84.7kgs. Most people I talk to don't understand how hard it is to make weight when I tell them about it but it really takes a lot of mental strength not to reach for that glass of water when you feel like death and to keep yourself wrapped up in 8 layers of clothing in a room with the heaters on with a heavy blanket covering you and the electric blanket on for hours.

Anyway, this time I couldn't hack it and I ended up giving up the weight cut at 11pm. Since I usually lose about 500g an hour through sweat, I calculated that if I wanted to end up at 82.0kg (in case of different scale calibration) I had to endure at least 4 more hours of feeling like I was going to boil to death. By that time, I was exhausted and ended up drinking 2l of liquid and put 3kg back on in an hour lol. Learnt a good lesson for GPA Worlds.

Friday morning I drove up to Auckland and weighed in at 11am where I was 87.8kg in just my underwear. Had about 5000 calories on Friday. My back was feeling a little bit stiff just from driving for 4 hours.

Saturday morning had 6 eggs, 2 hash browns and 2 pancakes for brekkie. Got to the venue at 9:30am and started warming up. For warmups I did 60kg for 5, 100kg for 5, 140kg for 3, 180kg for 2 then put light wraps on for a single on 220kg. Last warmup was a single on 240kg with medium tight wraps which felt good.

Squat first attempt was 260kg which flew up. Easy opener. Jumped to 272.5kg which is also 600 pounds which is a big milestone for me. The guy before me took a long time so I had my knees wrapped up for about 2 minutes. When I do up my wraps as tight as I can, my feet start going numb pretty much right away so I was in some pain by the time the bar was finally loaded for me. Still nailed the lift, slowed down a little bit through the sticking point but there was never any doubt. Chose 280kg for 3rd attempt which I failed at CAPO Nats 2 months ago. Got stuck about halfway up and grinded for a good 3 or 4 seconds but it wasn't to be. It was so close because I know if I had managed to get it up an inch further I would've powered through the lift. Still happy with it as last time I tried 280kg I had no chance but this time I almost had it. 280kg will be mine in 4 weeks!

Bench warmups were 60kg for 3 paused, 100kg for 3, 120kg for 2. Opened on 145kg pretty standard opener. Jumped to 152.5kg which was a slow lift but felt like I had a little more in me. I got 3rd attempt of 155kg about halfway up  and was so close to locking it out so I was really gutted that I didn't get it. By this time my subtotal was 425kg so I was on track for a PB total. I only had to deadlift 240kg to equal my last comp total of 665kg and my opener was going to be 250kg.

Deadlift warmups were 60kg for 5, 100kg for 5, 140kg for 3, 180kg for 2, 220kg for 1. My back was feeling a bit fatigued from the big grind on my last squat but warmups were all flying up so I wasn't too worried. I borrowed my mate's Chucks cos mine are like 3 years old and the tread on the soles are all worn out so when I do sumo, they slide out and cause me grief. Mate's ones were way more grippy on the floor and so I didn't have to worry about feet sliding out from under me. 250kg opener was a little bit slow off the floor but still an easy lift. 2nd attempt was 260kg. Breaking it off the floor was a bit tough but had no trouble locking it out. I asked for 265kg on my third attempt. As I was waiting around for third attempt, I could feel my lower back being tight and SI joints were also feeling sore. After deliberating for a few minutes, I decided to pass on my third attempt as I just didn't want to risk injuring my back with Worlds only 4 weeks away. I'd already achieved a 20kg PB total so I decided to bank my winnings and walk away happy and safe.

I ended up winning the Juniors with 425 Glossbrenner points, Came 3rd overall to Hamish and Tom which I was pretty happy with. Scored a tub of BCAAs.

Gonna rest my back for a week and just do upper body this week then do some lifts at 90% the following two weeks then deload for the week before Worlds. I'm pretty pumped! 700kg plus total at Worlds is my goal

As I said in my journal, was great to meet you mate. I saw all your 2nd and 3rd attempts, apart from 3rd deadlift which you didn't do. And I was so impressed. Just your age your still only so young you have a massive future if you can stay injury free and your bodyweight I kept forgetting you 18-20kg lighter than me. When you think about those two factors you gonna absolutely wreck it in years to come! that squat hamish said in other thread 270kg but it was 272.5kg. You push me to get my finger out my arse especially on squat.

great performance!

Cheers brother! You're a big unit in real life and didn't disappoint. Thanks for all the kind words man, appreciate it. Can't wait to do next comp with you again hahaha! Squat battles on!!!

Solid work Leeriod, those are really some world class numbers you are throwing around.

Quads are looking joocy. nohomo

Nice write up to

Thank you sir.

Here's vid of 272.5kg squat. I think depth was spot on, could've gone a bit deeper to eliminate doubts though. Interested in opinions on this. James reckons it might've been a little high :(

Great squat Tom! Chase that damm 280 and good luck for worlds bro. Any idea what numbers you planning to hit there?

Thanks Gyzz. My goal is 280 squat, 155 bench and 265 deadlift for the 700 total in the 82.5kg class. That will give me Glossbrenner points of 450 and will make me competitive to be top 3 hopefully for the overall Juniors at Worlds. I would love to win the overall Junior title but think that's going to be impossible with Jesse Burrows competing who did 320 squat 200 bench and 300 deadlift at 102kg only 19 years old back in August :o and got 470 points. Just saw a video of him on Facebook where he squatted 330kg for an EASY double. FML lol

Also there's Luke Shakespeare who is in 90kg class who's probably gonna squat around 280 bench 160-170 and deadlift 290kg so it will be tough. And that's only the guys I know about from Aussie, I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of freaky strong Juniors coming from all over the place.

Had today off work so just went in to gym and hit some back and calves. Shoulders are actually quite sore so might rest them this week as well and not do any pressing movements.

I've been burying myself in Gymnation 2.0 the last few days, and have only just caught up with a few of these topics now. But man, Tom, those numbers are seriously impressive!

So you had to compete in a heavier class you wanted, right? But that obviously didn't hurt your results too much if you still came 3rd overall?

Ha, just worked it out and if I had made weight and weighed in under 82.5kg, I would've beat Realtalk by one point lol. But then again, he could've dropped 5kg the same way easy for weigh-ins. Not too much of a biggie, but I just wanted to set the records in the U82.5kg class rather than the U90kg class. Planning on moving up to the U90s next year, sit around 95kg normally and just make weight for comps.

Went in and did arms last night cos had day off work and was bored so decided to train twice.

Went pretty hard and did like 16 supersets on bis and tris for an hour and today they're pretty sore.

Today I just did some quads. 2 sets of light leg extensions 30 reps then 3 sets of 30 reps 18kg dumbbell lunges. Then finished off with 5 sets of leg extensions 12 reps. Got a pretty good pump. Also did 3 sets of 12 hanging leg raises. Resting the back for a while to let it recover as it's still a bit tight.

Weighed in at 88.9kg this morning and yesterday morning was like 89.1kg so averaging around 89kg morning weight atm. Which is up about 1-1.5kg since I started blasting 4 weeks ago and I feel that I'm just as lean if not leaner. Happy that I'm putting on muscle but considering I need to make weight for Worlds, I'm gonna start restricting my calories to 3600ish, I have about 5000 usually which is maintenance for me. I wanna get my morning weight back to the 87.0 - 87.9kg band in 4 weeks time so that I only have to cut 5kgs or so for comp. Plus I get bad back pumps when I gain weight and I find it's easier to deadlift when I'm not bloated and heavy since my lower back's not under so much stress from the extra weight all day.

Killing it Tom. Awesome to watch man

Thanks

Bench press paused

60kg x12

100kg x8

120kg x3

130kg x3

130kg x3

Right elbow was feeling quite inflamed and was causing me pain. Not a good idea to bench after a heavy squat day. Probably could've done a 4th rep on the 1st set of 130kg but 2nd set of 130kg was 3 rep max.

Seated chest press machine

x15, 3 sets

Other chest press machine

x20, 3 sets

Lateral DB raises

12kg x15, 4 sets

Overhead DB press

12kg x20, 3 sets

x18, 4 sets

Single arm cable tricep extensions

x15, 4 sets

Wednesday night I did back.

180kg x3
220kg x3

SLDL
100kg x8, 3 sets

Lying leg curls
x15, 4 sets

Last night I had a bottle of Primo, a Peanut Slab and a muffin on my last break at work as a cheat then an hour later, I was feeling nauseous and my stomach was hurting. I ended up throwing up a few times and sat on the toilet until 1am when I started to finally feel better. So unfortunately missed last night's workout. 86.4kg this morning, lost over a kg from the diarrhea lol
