Shoulders are fucked lol. They're sore even when just standing still and hurt when I do everyday things. When I put the bench shirt on, they just start pinging as soon as I start to descend and I can't push because of the pain.

Gonna give all upper body lifting a rest for 7 days and carefully work my way back in next week.

just saw your lifting compilation mean vid man. was good to see it all the little things along the way keep up with your recordings it will get even more interesting in another 4 years time

Thanks bro.

I haven't gone to the gym since Tuesday because I've been working too much. Wednesday I worked 11am to 11pm, then did 5am to 6pm on Thursday and 5am to 9pm yesterday lol. So fucking tired. One thing I notice almost immediately is that my hands become really dry and they flake up after a few nights of sleep deprivation. I used to always have dry hands and couldn't figure out why. It must be from the lack of deep REM sleep which means I'm missing out on my daily dose of natural GH.

Also another thing I noticed was that on Thursday I was craving high calorie sugar laden foods all day. Thinking back to my cut, I'm pretty sure that most of my unplanned binges or unbearably high levels of cravings were on days following a night short on sleep. In the book that I read a few months ago called "The ravenous brain" by neuroscientist Daniel Bor, he has a segment about working memory. Working memory is comparable to RAM in a computer, it's where your temporary data is stored, able to be accessed and manipulated immediately. Working memory is critical for problem solving and cognitive thinking. He mentioned a study in which test subjects were sleep deprived and found that tasks involving working memory were impaired compared to control groups. After they had completed the task, they gave them a reward. They were given the choice of chocolate cake or an apple. Intriguingly, a large portion of the sleep deprived group chose the chocolate cake in comparison to the normal group.

This interesting observation was explained by the fact that working memory plays a large part in the human's ability for delayed gratification and the ability to suppress primal instincts, which is what distinguishes humans from other living organisms. Therefore when the capacity of working memory is reduced, we are more likely to give into the immediate gratification of chocolate cake, instead of the long-term delayed gratification of better health; or in the bodybuilder's case, being fucking shredded. Being aware of this knowledge, I can realise that any high levels of craving I have are a result of sleep deficiency and this helps me to convince myself that it's not a rational choice to be making in a state where my working memory is handicapped. Just like if you are aware that being intoxicated on alcohol will cause you to make poorer choices, you are more likely to ignore your own reasonings when you are inebriated because you are enlightened of this fact. Also gives me more reason to make sure I get enough sleep.

Anyway, I got my Do-win squat shoes and I went to try them out.

Squat

60kg x5

100kg x5

140kg x5

180kg x2

200kg x0

Leg extension x15, 4 sets

Lunges DB 20kg per side

x24 paces, 3 sets

I was weak as f*ck, guess a lack of sleep also corroborates with diminishing strength. Shoes are a bit too small lol. Should be alright if they stretch out a little bit. Wish I'd got 8.5s, not 8s. My chucks are size 8s. In terms of technique, they certainly made hitting depth easier and I didn't have as much stress suffered on my Achilles tendons/ankles. I think I still need to get used to them a bit.

Shoulders are still pretty fucked, not as bad as last week but still causing enough pain to restrict my strength. No more pushing movements for me until the GPC Bench wars in Hamilton next Saturday. Hopefully by then, my rotator cuffs will have recovered enough not to cause so much pain as to inhibit maximal contraction of my muscle fibres.

My hamstrings are still really tight from Tuesday. I don't like training hamstrings because DOMS causes a reduction of ROM in my hamstrings which leads to an overinvolvement of my lower back in everyday activities. This leads to a stiff and tired lower back from being overused. I need stronger hamstrings for powerlifting but it leads to impinging on my squats and deadlifts, as well as everyday comfort. Still, it was a pretty good effort considering my lower back feeling stiff, 200 for 4 reps raw is a PB for me. Especially after failing to do even one rep of it last week.

Went back to the doctor today because the minocycline I got wasn't doing jack shit for my acne. I've got cystic acne on my face and continuing to get new outbreaks even on the antibiotics. She recommended Roaccutane (isotretinoin) and I have to get blood tests done in order to make sure that I am not at risk of side effects as it the drug may affect the liver. I'm gonna get bloods done on Monday for Liver - ALT, Fasting Lipids, Complete Blood Count and Serum Creatinine.

Also got a copy of the results of the last blood test I got back in December.

General

Sodium: 137mmol/L, ref. 135-145

Potassium: 4.8mmol/L, ref. 3.5-5.2

Creatinine: 89 umol/L, ref. 60-105

eGFR: >90mL/min, ref. >60

Liver

Bilirubin total: 14umol/L, ref. 0-20

Alk phosphatase: 69U/L, ref. 40-110

GGT: 17 U/L, ref. 0-60

ALT: 54 U/L, ref 0-40 HIGH

Total Protein: 78g/L, ref. 60-80

Albumin: 45 g/L, ref. 33-48

Globulin: 33 g/L, ref. 25-35

Lipids

Total cholesterol: 6.2mmol/L, ref. <5.0 HIGH

Triglyceride: 0.7mmol/L, ref. <2.0

HDL Cholesterol: 0.63mmol/L, ref. >1.0 LOW

LDL Cholesterol: 5.3mmol/L, ref. <3.4 HIGH

Total/HDL ratio: 9.9 ref. <4.5 HIGH

Complete Blood Count

Haemoglobin: 150 g/L, ref. 130-175

PCV: 0.44L/L, ref. 0.4-0.52

MCV: 94 fL ref. 80-99

MCH: 32 pg, ref. 27-33

WBC: 7.5 x10E9/L, ref. 4.0-11.0

Neut Seg: 4.6 x10E9/L, ref. 1.9-7.5

Lymphocyte: 2.1 x10E9/L, ref. 1.0-4.0

Monocyte: 0.6 x10E9/L, ref. 0.2-1.0

Eosinophil: 0.2 x10E9/L, ref. 0.0-0.5

Basophil: 0.1 x1E9/L, ref. 0-0.2

Platelet count 443 x10E9/L, ref. 150-400 HIGH

Diabetes test

HbA1c (IFCC): 25mmol/mol, ref. <41

So my ALT is elevated, not really worried about that since that's common if doing intense weight training especially since my GGT is within the normal range. A bit concerned about my cholesterol, it's probably a result of low estrogen. I'll see what it looks like on my bloods next week as I haven't been taking any AIs for the last month. Also platelet count is a bit high, although all the other markers are within ref. range.

Did GPC bench comp yesterday. Hadn't benched for 2 weeks cos my shoulders were fucked and wanted to let them heal. They were still sore warming up and on my 3rd lift, they were so sore that I just gave up lol. Weighed in at 87.4kgs

1st attempt 140kgs Good lift

2nd attempt 145kgs Good lift

3rd attempt 150kgs No lift.

Only just got 145.  Looking at the vid, the right hand stayed still while the left pushed up and looks like the right hand side might have dipped slightly. A bit iffy.

Shoulders are sore today doing normal things so I don't think I'll be doing any pushing movements for a while. Gonna test my raw (no wraps) squat and deadlift on Saturday though at the Rotorua comp.

bad luck man. Unfortunately, i developed shoulder impingement at the beginning of 2013, and it got so bad i couldn't do any pushing movements. It took about 6 months of no push movements + rest for it to heal. I now only close grip bench (shoulder width) and it feels great.

I reckon you should go see a dr/specialist. They can take scans and you can find out exactly whats wrong with it. They might be able to treat it and reduce the healing time (for example, with impingement they can give you anti-inflammatory shots etc.).

Got results from bloods done on Monday and all the values have improved. ALT is still outside range at 45 (0-40). Total cholesterol is 5.3 (<5.0), HDL is 0.88 (>1.0) and LDL is 4.1 (<3.4). Platelet count is 237, last time it was 430 (upper limit 400). That was good enough to secure a prescription of 56 Oratane (isotretinoin) capsules 20mg each. Doing 40mg a day for 4 weeks and then need to get another blood test to make sure it's not adversely affecting my liver or lipids, in order to continue the treatment.

I'm pretty excited at the prospect of not having to deal with acne soon so fingers crossed that it works and doesn't give me too many side effects.

Did some arms today in the gym. First time in over a week.
