yo! geez that was probably the happiest moment of my life. yesterday i was so down about being told im depressed and in denial about it but with powerlifting i'd like to think i will overcome this! the people were freakin amazing, very supportive crowd. it was fun, lots of fun despite me missing a couple of calls and dropping a bar here and there for red lights lol.

dunno why i didnt start powerlifting earlier but damn i love it, will be back! thanks also to the big support from the guys here, you know who you are! Was a pleasure meeting few of the forum members in person today. Tom, John, Jamie, Pablo and Josh were present, met few ppls for the first time. Pseudo even came around for a visit. Thanks Josh for the good tips inbetween and Jamie & Tom for pushing me to go for PRs, i had literally no confidence leading up to this and feel on top of the world right now :)

The event was truly amazing, there were some massive lifts going on, I won't go on too much about that as Tom gonna do a full write up on event in his traditional form when he gets home so watch out for that!

my lifts

65kg bodyweight (was 61 last night , good overnight bulk)

squat 130 (didnt do a 3rd attempt as almost fainted after this, was epic grinder)

bench 70kg (done 80kg (PR) all G but pressed before the call hence i got reds, i'll learn to follow the rules next time surely)

deadlift 180kg (easy done, then followed up with 200kg (PR!!) on 3rd attempt. unfortunately i was a dickhead and dropped the bar but will never ever do that again for sure!)

thank you gymnation and friends. world is a good place afterall, you just gotta stick with the good crowd!

You did well, especially for your first ever comp. It was a pleasure to meet you and it was damn good to see you having fun and enjoying yourself.....which is what powerlifting should be all about anyway. If you're not having fun/ enjoying it, then why do it?
You're a strong wee bugger, with more training and some confidence in yourself you'll be amazed at what you can do. Keep it up.

^ thanks all! went indoor rock climbing with the regular gang today, thought it would be real easy considering deadlift requires some epic grip but totally underestimated the finger strength involved. heaps of fun, would recommend.

still on a bit of a high from yesterday, though body is finally feeling the aftermath of 4 months of somewhat reckless and badly planned training.

gonna take a deload week and in the mean time think about what i can do to improve my bench strength in particular over the next few months since safe to say thats my biggest shortfall in weight class.  hips are finally making progress towards healing now after that injury in 2013 since i been taking it easy on squats and focusing on deads. just gonna let hips cruise for a bit longer then smash squats too.

not really sure what the next goal should be, but in the short term im gonna aim for a "3 white lights" legit 85kg bench. got a mate who really wants to cycle lake taupo (160km) and wants me to join him in training, thinking about it but at the same time i dont wanna go anorexic again & lose all my strength like i did last year cos it takes ages to get it back  #1stworldproblems

Sorry I didn't get to meet you, Pseudonym. I went to introduce myself a few times but kept getting sidetracked since it was a pretty hectic pace with the comp. I was the old bugger who was a mixture of chalk, sweat, beard and tattoos.
Thanks for popping in and supporting the comp! Hopefully we'll see you at another one sometime.

when you lock out deadlift let your breath out too then you won't faint or drop the bar cause your BP will drop when you breathe out and you will get whites cuzzy!

gonna take a deload week bro since haven't rested at all in the whole time training since march (5-6days a week in gym, then weekends hiking mountains etc). ill see how i feel next week and decide what to do. kinda wanna compete anyway since it's more about the atmosphere of being around such strong folk than about just going and trying to win, we'll see. def gonna be trying to eat hard for sure.  recommend any particular program like sheiko or whatever? or just keep doing my random stuff to keep bulkng up and dont worry about proper PL program until 70kg+?

jamie sent vid from another angle, dat shockwave after i dropped the deadlift lol. was seeing stars. thx for tips i breathe properly make sure that dont happen next time, need them white lights!

Nice dead man. If you're gonna try get competitive at PL then def work hard on your squat I reckon.  Since I started doing deads and squats I've been the same as you with much higher dead compared to squat and it's fucking annoying having your lagging squat 'eat up' your decent dead on your total. Not ideal if squatting fucks your body though.

thanks bro, it came up faster than i could ever imagine, not even sure how cos i couldn't get it off the floor no matter how hard i tried in training. will eventually wanna get competitive will need to up that squat and bench hard. havent been doing much squat over the past few months and my hips feel way better for it, almost completely healed now so just gonna ease in to it cos if i fk it up again i'll be back to square 1 so taking a real slow & steady approach i guess.

today went in easy session, my cousin saw my vids from weekend and came by was showing interested in converting to the ways of powerlifting. trying to get him in to it away from bodybuilding haha.. same height as me, 90 kilos and leaner than me too at only 19 yrs old , benches 120 for sets of 12 massive 1RM potential i reckon. doesn't even squat or deadlift and has tree trunk legs lol ...that there half tongan genetics #mirin

Day 349

Weight today 61.9kg, trained biceps/chest super light stuff. think i done my bicep tendons in good from rock climbing on sunday...hope its just a minor sprain. for now trying to target with foam roller from shoulders area all the way down to fore arms. hurt even doing super light chest/arm stuff, even when i tried tricep pushdowns there was sharp pains on the biceps. prob do easy legs tomorrow or friday. doubtful ill be able to push my body to compete at nats in 6 weeks but gonna be looking for a bench only + deadlift only later in the year

Another sweet day today, hiking around Whatipu with the mates. Life is good!

i've been blocking off timeslots in my calendar to make sure i eat (tip from counselor since i often forget to eat cos i never feel hungry anymore) , was back up to 65 kilo this morning  which is 4kg up from last week (measured on my own scale) . thinking of trying some kind of hypnosis see if its possible to be given the gift of finding food enjoyable again.

Below is gym log for yesterday.

Trained bit of everything up to certain point , glad to see strength hasn't suddenly dropped off with the recent very lackluster training. Maybe my focus on eating rather than training has been a good thing,

still got that sharp feeling from forearms up to delts on both sides but it's no where near as intense as it was earlier int he week. probably settled down by next week.

23/07

Day 3fiddy

  • Squat up to 2 x 110kg, few sets of high reps at 60kg
  • Deadlift up to 2 x 160kg, few speed pulls at 110kg
  • Bench couple sets at 8 x 60kg, then some high reps at 50/40.
  • Super light accessory work focusing on trying to get a stretch on everything

Another of my cousins (yeah i talk about cousins a lot, typical indian family where grandparents on both sides had 10+ kids so i have shitloads of cousins lol) joined a gym recently i caught up with him, he wants to be a'aesthetic' first and then consider powerlifting. i think he'll enjoy PL. weighs 70kg, deadlifted 110 on his first day, good shit. i couldn't even grip 100 even after months of training lol. its fun finding other people who respond the same way to these big lifts (like finding it fun rather than complaining about soreness or some shit) , gonna try  drive out to train with him atleast once a month check in on progress.

today eating game defs not on point but loving this "n-mass" mass gainer, havent tried all 4 scoops since would fill up entire shaker and iw ouldnt be able to actually mix it but with just 2 scoops and 200ml water it's super thin and i take it down like nothing. stays down. i plan on abusing the fk outta this while i regain my appetite to eat real food.

anyway here's what my weekend diet looks like atm.. :( normally dinners are a bit bigger and theres more snaks during day on weekdays. lunch is usually something home made - chicken with some rice and those flavoured cooking sauces from supermarket (tom yum is the go to atm as not so dry but dry enough to not leak in my bag when taking to work). ideally would up the protein to 200g but even the ON whey is triggering some wierd gastric issues atm whereas the mass gainer does not.. im too tired to figure out the science behind that. Back to basics, using program Wookie gave me ages ago which is a repeatable training block. Gonna focus on pushing through it consistently along with the eating. First day was harder than expected. Not sure if not enough rest since last training session or I just made bad guesstimates on weights to start with. I kind of want both hypertrophy and strength but if i only had to chose one right now it would be strength.  Will run first training block of this, assess my strength / recovery ability and then see if i can afford to add in more accessory work.

Trained at home today with my music up, it's great training at the gym with good people around but totally different at home. Just zoned out and had fun in my own little world for an hour today. I'm so tempted to get in to oly lifts for some reason whenever lifting at home. inb4 all kinds of injuries from doing things i'm not trained to do.

Some kind of deep aching in quads, doesnt seem like the bad kind of pain.. kinda like a kind of doms i havent felt in ages. This must be the DOMS of gains. It's time to grow stronger :D

Day 352

Body weight 64.3kg

26/07

Sumo Deadlifts (trying to practice the form so I can see if I'm better at this or conventional)

2x3x70kg, 2x110kg, 1x140kg, 1x160kg

Deadlifts

4 singles @ 160kg

Straight leg sumo DL

3x8x50kg

Shiiit.... 4,000cals at 65kg - that's a strong bulk! :-o

That's awesome that you're inspiring your cousin now... very cool.

Ya man I hope he sticks to it, seems to be loving the idea of it so far. Will get him in to some end of year comps with me.

Sounds like a strong bulk but I been eating atleast 3k+ daily for past few months and my body isn't absorbing it all lol. I know the stuff i eat isn't the cleanest source of calories but fact is if anyone else eats like this they'll probably make solid gains and here I am mucking around in the 60s still. Consciously trying to up the intake to 4-5k but eating is becoming much more of a chore than I'd like and taking up so much time in my day. Today had much the same in terms of cals but less gainer shakes and more rice. Gonna try make time to see docs again some time soon and see if can be recommended to some gut specialist or someone who knows about metabolic problems
