5 Months of MT (Squats)

Hey all, names Tyler (MT) I am a 105 raw lifter from Central Districts and train at Powerhouse gym Welly.

Log all my activity here http://www.nzbodybuilding.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=13033

Just a wee note about what I have done over this year and my journey thus far into Powerlifting or the past 5-7 months of it anyway as it’s been a pretty crazy ride thought I’d share with all.

Starts off end of Aug 2012 I had an operation to get rid of my appendicitis which hit me pretty hard physically and mentally as for those who have had it know it's not just the time off to mend it's the lack of being able to do the most mundane and simple tasks for a few weeks. 2 weeks before I could walk more than 1K and a few more weeks before I thought about lifting anything. Took 7ish weeks off in total and resumed training in October. Nothing really too hard once I knew what I could and could not do I stuck with what worked. i.e NO ab rollouts for 3 months kind of thing as they just felt like up abs were being ripped apart did some in Dec I think and took a week to recover from the DOMS. Had some great support and a very stubborn girl who literally forced me to stay home and rest and not go into the gym.

All that said I still wanted to compete in the upcoming comp at Powerhouse the Bledisbro open where NZ vs AUS in a battle for the title. Briefly started a 5x5 template raw then jumped into a suit around 3 weeks out from the comp. Never hit depth once in it until the day of the comp.

Nov 24 BBRO Squats-Super Cent and knee wraps belt and just hit a 245 Squat. Wasn't very impressed with this as my raw was only around 160 and I got heaps out of gear and that doesn't mean anything for me.

Some more time off and December I started Smolov base cycle. 3 weeks of torture and pain but a much needed kick in the butt. Plugged in a 170 for a 1RM even though that was never really there. Struggled with a lot of knee and leg pain more specifically the exterior of my calves (not sure exact muscles) were flared up and making things incredibly difficult to squat and even walk at times. Almost cut my journey there but I was stupid enough to carry on and glad I did. Fast forward 3 weeks and finished off with a 10x3@160 and a shaky double at 180 with knee wraps. Few days to deload and tested hit a 200 raw. Can't find a video on this but it was ok.

Week deload/holiday and back into it. With my insane program that went like this.

1st block-6 Weeks Russian Squat/ Smolov Jr for Bench (4 weeks)

2nd block-9 Weeks Russian Strength

Week deload then Comp.

All these combined I have named it сырье монстр or RAW MONSTER.

1st block was one of my toughest cycles to date. Still residue pain from Smolov flowing over into this and lower back was playing up at the same time. A very bad place for a couple weeks there, lots of Nurofen and concrete to push this one out.

The volume of the Russian Squats alongside the Smolov Jr was tough not going to lie, but well worth the grind in the end for both lifts getting back up very quickly.

Feb 11th I had to hit 3x3 at 200, here's how that went

Note I am jerking the hips before descending and not looking strong at all. No control of the bar at all and very, very tough.

something had to change, and in Feb just a few weeks later it did. Jumped on the webz and did some research and remembered one of the 1st videos I ever watched when I started 2 years back that Drizzt got me onto the “So you think you can…series”

Watched the whole series bench and deads included over and over and tried to emulate their techniques. Have a look if you have not seen them.

Shortly after this eureka moment Feb 23 170x8

Note the change in hips and getting more drive from the hole getting better. Cutting out that wee jerk before I start not only ensured I was tight coming into the hole but the arch put my gluets in a better position and took away from my dominate quads. Good motivation going forward and the mental kick I needed. From there 170 was just a number and became easier and easier, finished up the week after with a 10 which felt horrible at the time but worth it to get ontop of it.

2nd phase kicks into gear no deload straight into it, which was a big mistake when I think about it. Really didn't need to go straight into another big cycle. March went really well for me, no filming just knuckled down and went hard. This introduced another problem however, and one I had been dreading for weeks DEADLIFTS. Hadn’t done them all year really and it showed. More pain was back but legs were well up to speed by now so at least that wasn’t an issue anymore. Adding in deads did help my overall performance and squats kept growing as a direct result.

13 april 210 double

Confidence sky high let’s give this 220 a crack with no deload eh. RAW MONSTER completed thank fk for that. Would definitely train smarter should I do this all over again.

Week deload And the final result of 5 months is this CD champs 27/4

What I want anyone reading this to take away is that it doesn’t matter where you start from or what sport you are doing you just have to start. If there is something bothering you whether it be injuries, form or simply not strong enough you have to work on these and ask for help if you cannot find the answer.

Thanks all, pretty excited to see what the rest of the year will bring. Next comp Nationals in Sept.

Wow, I know we talked about this the other day but when you put it all together like that what you've done is insane bro. Massive progress in a relatively short time, and fought your way back to bigger and better things. I'll be chasing your squats in Sept

Yeah makes for a better story when it's all collated like that instead of scattered in my log (where I got all the info from). Mate I will have to put in even more work to keep you at bay.

Keep doing what you are doing man.

  • 1 year later...

My first Squat PB in over a year. 210 was by best double that lead to a 220 Squat at CD's 2013. I have not been at that level since now. Very happy to chalk up a 210 triple 2 months out from Nats.

Has taken a VERY long time to build up a high bar stance but I have put the time and effort in. Currently running a Bulgarian style RPE system for all 3 lifts.

Difference in a year:

Extra body weight. Now firmly in the 120 class (111kgs yesterday)

High bar.

New training system.

Ginger beard.

I'll track my progress here for squats anyway.
