Liver Function Tests

Hi, can intensive workouts or alot of activity per week cause Liver function test enzymes to be elevated? Specifically ALT? If so by how much?

Thank you.

yes. not sure how much normally... my ALT and AST were both twice upper limit of reference range when i used to do heaps of running take heaps caffeine pills and do weights every day. but think at least in theory its normally just AST that is affected by exercise as its present in muscles also and gets into blood when muscles are damaged.

what was your result for these two enzymes?

Apparently ALT can also be elevated http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2291230/ but yea AST affected the most. ALT by about 4 and AST by about 16, only over a 7 days period how ever.

Its just that my ALT is mildly/slightly elevated. I don't know the numbers.

The range for normal is 0-45 for both and ages ago mine was 34 ALT and 29 AST, which was fine.

I had a slight muscular injury that went on for a month or two, then another bigger muscular injury went on for a while.

I was wondering if that could make my ALT mildly/slightly elevated? With weight training as well. As well as taking strong medication and rapid fat gain and fat lose.

Its actually to do with another problem of mine non training related which may also add to the elevation.

I also read that ALT and AST are not true liver function tests of the liver as the cause can come from other body sources, compared to other enzymes that are more liver specific

This is very common in weight training individuals. Yes both can be elevated by exercise, and the amounts by which yours were elevated are small. Doctors don't tend to get too worried by these measures unless they're far higher anyway i.e. double/triple etc. Most likely it's related to your training etc. but if you're concerned get another test, but take a week off training beforehand and you'll know if it's training related.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17764474

"CONCLUSION: The liver function parameters, AST and ALT, were significantly increased for at least 7 days after the exercise. In addition, LD and, in particular, CK and myoglobin showed highly elevated levels. These findings highlight the importance of imposing restrictions on weightlifting prior to and during clinical studies. Intensive muscular exercise, e.g. weightlifting, should also be considered as a cause of asymptomatic elevations of liver function tests in daily clinical practice."

Has any one had a muscle injury then happened to have blood test and get high levels?

For example I was doing squats and used to much weight after a long lay off, and my back muscle gave way, thought it was gonna a serve injury but only turned out to be 2 weeks or so off.
