Bah... you stole my thunder, jono! It was actually something I briefly discussed with one of our sponsors a while back. :P

The only concern is not to tread on the toes of NABBA or the NZFBB. I think it would be fair to say bodybuilding can be intensely political and I get the distinct impression they're watching us warily right now! So I'm anxious the forums aren't seen as "poaching" anyone's patch.

The suggestion I floated to the sponsor was for a competition judged not necessarily on the best physique, but instead on the most improved. This way, we're not only encouraging beginners to get into it, we also differentiate our purpose from the organisations'.

Of course, we'd probably need more members for it to be truly effective. But they're coming... you're all promoting this site heavily, aren't you?!

Why do you think it would be of interest to them? This is just a web site for bodybuilders, alot of whom have no allegiance to either organisation.

These things can be hard to run logisticaly, I saw one run on another board all sorts of allegations of "photoshopped" pics and fakes though with a bit of organisation it should be easy to get around. Ie give everyone a number they must write on themselves etc. that must be visible. Intersting idea however. lets see how it goes.

they must be damn insecure if they cant handle an online contest, i was not talking about a super serious one, just a simple fun one.. it doesnt need to be sponsered or anything. are we not allowed to have fun on this site

Sorry - rereading last night's post, I didn't mean to sound quite as paranoid as I did! :P

But I'd still like it to be judged on the most improved physique, rather than the biggest or leanest... That way everyone has a chance to win, whether their advantage is beginner gains or experience. (It also makes it harder to cheat, since you'd have to post progress pictures as you go along.)

Thoughts/comments?

Perhaps you coould have a few categories, most improved, biggest, leanest etc, therfore giving even more people a chance.

doesnt most improved cover everything ? think about it...

i think this is part of nz culture.. that everone has to be a winner..... well its compete bs and is the reason nz is doing so poorly compared to other countries.

no not really, based on that most people could beat ronnie coleman He is not going to improve this year as much as my next door niegbour could if he were to go on one of those body for life things. (he is quite fat! and probably doesnt know what a gym looks like, a good guy all the same.)

Some people here might be in great shape already (not me unfortunatly)

and will have little overall improvement compared to thers.

Have a few sections it is all just a bit of fun anyway isnt it?

Of course most improved doesnt cover everything

This doesnt really compare to the NZ idea that everyone has to be a winner, by having a few categories just lets those who are already at the top of their game, ie are at the moment shreded, compete against others who are in a similar position.

But those who are at the top of their game should have the experience to make changes to their physique that are just as impressive as a beginner's.

If you're a pro bodybuilder, you could probably beat a bunch of amateurs without any extra effort at all if the criteria is for size. However, if the criteria is "most improved", then you might have to make some effort to get rid of your off-season belly! If you do it right you could still win, but if you don't, there's a chance some dedicated beginner might come first instead. :)

Also, do you think we've got enough people to do it just yet? In my experience in online comps, you might have 20 people start, but only 3 post their pics at the end. We've got about a dozen regulars returning on a daily basis, and quite a few lurkers. Is that enough, or should we set the start date a couple of months away?

(As always, feel free to argue with me... I'm just playing devil's advocate on this.)

yeah ive seen a few online contests before and some people refuse to post their pics in the end.. it seems very strange to me, its like they are not willing to face reality, and want to keep living in their respective dream worlds.

When i mean, on top of there game, then they would basically already be in contest shape, therefor given say just 6 months, it would be hard to fit in a good bulk-cut cycle to show significant improvement over a newbie who say had a bit of bulk but then cut for 6 months. But if there were to be multiple categories, then like you say, there porbabley wouldnt be enough compeditors to enter. At the moment i think there wouldnt even be enough compeditors wanting to enter the most improved category, so perhaps biggest and ripped isnt such a good idea at the moment.

Why dont you post a new thread, with 20 or so numbers and people can put forth their name. when youve got 20 people then the comp can start.
