FotRs 1st Year Gym Progress

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Been a year since I started gym now, thought I'll post up some progress pics..... no where near where I was hoping to be, little disappointed right now because I somehow managed to bump myself up in to another category of skinny fat. Maybe the 1 year goal was just too optimistic but probably I haven't been working hard enough. Not long ago was ~6kg heavier and felt leaner but dunno wtf happened. Recently I've really let go of my diet (stopped counting cals altogether so prob not eating near enough) as well as have been trying a lot of different things (tested IF, got in to indoor soccer), lacking a lot of consistency..

Not to be too negative though, I very rarely think about the outcome - I still love going to the gym and working out is most definately an "I want to" rather than "I have to" in my books.

Well that's the rant over, will use it for motivation to kick my ass in to a higher gear. Have learned so much on the journey so far thanks to people on this forum as well as some helpful YouTube vids. Cheers for all your help, hope to keep pumping out them gains in the new year!

Stats :

Age : 23

Height : 172cm (~5'8"?)

A year ago starting weight : ~50kg stickfigure

3 months progress : 65kg dreamer bulking status @ 25% bodyfat (LOL!)

1 year progress goal : ~70kg @14%ish bf

1 year progress actual (now) : 61.6kg @unknown %... any guesses?

New goal (for 2 yr progress) : 70kg @ 10% bf

Final/dream goal : basically to push myself to reach my natural potential which I'm guessing is around 80~85kg lean (but really no idea, so much misleading stuff online guess I'll find out after a few years)

Anyway, here's some random/awkward as posing pics

Don't be too hard on yourself mate. In my opinion you're looking pretty good, far better than a lot of young guys I see at the gym. Older guys too.

All too often we're our own worst critics. Keep pushing yourself, keep trying and you'll get to where you want. Best of luck. :D

Not bad, bro. Gains of 10kg in a year (and lean, too) are not to be dismissed. Do you have any before pics for comparison?

Your rear double bicep shows a lot of potential - tiny waist, and a bit of a V taper going on already. That's going to look very cool with a bit more size.

I still love going to the gym and working out is most definately an "I want to" rather than "I have to" in my books.

And really, that's the most important bit. Progress will happen in time, but only if you keep going - and you'll only keep going if you love it.

about 15% bodyfat, you look like. Still some good gains bro. You should get to 70kgs easy

15% lol u dont have abs when ur 15%

Yeah, you do. He doesn't really have abs, my brother is like that. He looks exactly like my brother in terms of abs and leanness. And my skin's a lot thinner than my brother, and I'm supposed to be about 12 to 14%

I think maybe we should look at how Bodyfat percentage works.

It's an average of all the Bodyfat over your body tested in various places. Some people hold less fat in their midsection than they do in their back, others will look pudgy up top, and have ultra lean legs. So if you are basing your Bodyfat assumptions solely on midsection fat then you can be misled.

The other factor you have to look at is Bodyweight vs Bodyfat percentage. FotR weighs 61kg. 14% of that is 8.5kg of fat. 14% Bodyfat on someone 100kg is 14kg, that's 5.5kg more fat but the same Bodyfat percentage. In theory It is actually harder for a lighter person to have lower Bodyfat percentage than a heavier person just because of the mathematical equation and essential fat stores (just thinking out loud here, nothing to back this up).

Anyway strong progress over the last year FotR. Your body is starting to take shape and you're looking good man. Strong downlighting and I'm guessing flattering shots, I'm gonna estimate Bodyfat around 14-15%.

Cheers guys, did not expect this to turn in to an argument over bodyfat %s lol

Cheers! Unfortunately nope, I wouldn't be caught dead taking my shirt off at 50kg (actually I probably would be shot by some duck hunters or something).. wish I did take some now though but in this journey for a lifetime now so just gonna use these 1st year pics as the starting point for my over all goal.

That's an interesting theory there I think I see what you're getting at. Have been tested at 10% not long ago and it did look way different (most of my fat is stored on abs/lower back like most people) so I agree with you and Tommyboy that right now I'm probably at 13~15%.

Stopped with the sports for now and will start paying more attention to counting cals again after Xmas, dirty bulking again till new years :pfft: Happy holidays all!

I agree with soundsgood. Certain areas of your body have more fat than others. The best way to calculate it is with the 6 skinfold measurement. You take a measurement on the following spots on your body.

Abdomen: 2cm lateral to the imbilicus

Suprailium: Feel for the top crest of the hip bone

Quad: Halfway between your hip joint and the middle of your knee cap

Tricep: Halfway between the acromial and olecranon process

Subscapula: Just below the middle of the lower edge of the scapula

Medial calf: Inside of the widest part of your calf

You add these measurements up and since you are a male, the formula will be as follows: 6SF(sum of 6 skinfolds)x0.1051+2.58

That will be your most accurate way to determine your bodyfat.

Ask somebody with calipers to help you out the gym and you will know for sure.

Hope this helps. :rockout:
