Muscle Ups

Who can do them? Set a goal of being able to do 10 by the end of the year (before actually trying to do one  )

Any tips on a progression towards doing them?

Have read mastering russian dips and false grip pullups is a good start.

Last I tried I could do about 4 with narrow grip (hand against hand).

I do a lot of pullups and chins, diamond, indian, standard and wide pressups.

After a bit of youtube videos i have found a couple of exercises that can help towards doing muscle ups

Russian Dips - Found these very hard at first on triceps and elbow joints, started doing them with bands under legs and now can do them without.

False Grip pullups- using your hand as a hook, means at the transition point your hand is already in the correct positon to push down on the bar during the dip motion.

Negatives from the top of the movement, Using a smith machine to jump up to the top on the movement and lower yourself down in the reverse of the muscle up as slow as possible.

I am going to hammer these exercises as hard as i can until i can do them all with ease then move on to putting them all together into a muscleup. :D

Have been doing the russian dips, took a few trys to get them, feels very wierd and painful on the elbows at fist.

Have been also doing false grip pullups (hand used as a hook rather than a grip) with a band under legs to assist when i start to fail.

Also been using a smith machine set high to jump up to the top of the movement and slowly lowering and doing the muscle up in reverse.

Progressing nicely. i think in a few weeks i should have a solid muscle up Probably with a kip.

Goal by the end of the year is 10 with miniman kip

This is what we use to teach Muscle ups, very good and you progress quiet quickly. We start at the top to teach the movement, then come down each week about 50mm depending on how they go. Might be hard if you do not have the same style of setup but you could use technique boxes, and stack them.

Start with the bar around chest height, if that is comfortable then just come down till it is hard, go back up about a 100mm and rep that 3 x 3,

Will not take to long, but it still will be tough but a lot easier.

If this height is tough just go higher

This is the True Muscle up, but this is pretty tough.

What is the reason a person would want to do a muscle up?

I cant see the relevance in training or sport

Fad before XFit Not to sure myself, only one of the PLs in The House has attempted it, a few of the Olys have and some of the MMA guys. Its alright if you are under 70kgslaughing.gif
