Xbox, Ps3 or a Wii what one should I buy and why?

Been wanting a console for a while for something to keep me occupied on the weekends other than socialising.

FTR: Never been a gamer am pretty tech savvy and will prob pick things up quickly and go online against other players etc.

So based on the above whats got the best bang for buck, games etc etc.

imo wii games seem really focused on children or elderly. can be good at times, main appeal is some fun stuff for when people come over.

you shop around and you will find great deals for any of them. xbox has the upper hand in terms of # games available but there are only a handful of games from either console which will really appeal to you so better to focus on that rather than the raw numbers.

what consoles are popular among your friends? last thing you want to do is go out and get an xbox when all your friends are playing online with the ps3 (no cross platform compatibility)

Cheers FOTR.

I don't think many of my friends are all that into it tbh, so it won't matter. Yeah I didnt think the Wii was suitable but chucked it up to get feedback anyway. I have been asking around and yes, you're right. People do say xbox has more games... However, people say ps3 is probably a more powerful system as it was released after xbox... I think I'm leaning towards ps3.... hmmm

the PS3 is more powerful in ways but developers these days design games with easy portability in mind (code once for console x then transfer to console y with minimal time invesment). the power potential is never hit because they design it to fit within specs of the weakest system in the chain.

in the long term, ps3 still probably a better choice though; it's not been known for near as many hardware issues as xbox (or atleast not in the spotlight for it) and online play is free rather than a paid/premium 'option'.

... and make sure to pick up some Street Fighter

It don't matter if your tech savvy...

U gon' get pwnd by some ten year old kid all day err day online brah

Lol

Tech savvy and gaming skills are 2 different things. I was meaning i'm probably clever enough to get into online game play rather than just offline. In which case what console will provide the best experience?

Tom please aware me on your gaming preference.....

I've got (well, have had) all of them, but the 360 RROD'ed last year, and got the YLOD on my PS3 earlier this year :( So have kind of been forced into PC gaming, which is a lot better than I thought. Just a hassle having to eventually upgrade hardware and stuff (although I started out ok so shouldn't effect me for a little while at least).

Out of the listed ones, I'd go PS3. Wii is awesome for a game of golf or similar games when you have mates around (and, err, easy to hack if you want to look into that side of things :shifty:). I won mine in a competition, probably wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Handy to have around though.

360 does have a pretty good back catalogue of games, but the technology is getting old. So is the PS3, but not quite as old as the 360.

For games, most popular releases these days are done multi-platform anyway, so there is only the rare exclusive title that you have to watch out for (and is usually released on other platforms down the track), but same could be said for PS3 or 360 in the exclusive games argument.

I prefer the PS3 controller, the Blu Ray functionality, and the (easily!) upgradeable hard drive. Had a lot of movies and music stored on it, and just used it as a media centre in the lounge really.

i prefer pc gaming, but when it comes to consoles, there isn't a great deal of difference between xbox and playstation

- graphics are comparable

- the range of exclusive games on ps is better than the exclusive games on xbox (imo) but xbox having a greater range overall evens that out

- hardware is a non-issue with the newer consoles, less prone to failure than before (xbox) and ps fails too on occasion (YLOD)

- xbox has better a achievement system, more responsive menus and a better ui (imo), and most windows devices interact with it now

- online is comparable, xbox live slightly better imo, but you have to pay for it

- community is less dependent on the platform and more dependent on the game itself if you ask me...

current gen consoles are old, next gen isn't too far away, if i do purchase a console again it will likely be the next xbox

Lets just ignore Wii especially with the Wii U probably coming out before the end of the year. It depends on what you want the console for, that may sound like a dumb statement but do you want it purely for gaming or do you want it for watching movies etc as well?

Purely for gaming I'd go for the 360, at the end of the day while it doesn't have a blu-ray player the speed difference in reading games between the blu-ray player and dvd while playing games is negligible. Also I'm not sure if the PS3 can copy games to the hard drive, but I know 360's can which a lot of games for 360 are now optimised for, making less wear and tear on your disc drive, and making games run faster. However be aware that some of the Older games are not optimised for this and run better off the disc. Basically it's a precursor to all games being downloaded. As for online while Xbox live is a paid service it's only like 10 bucks a month and it is a far better network, party gaming audio is nice quality and because it's a paid service there are slighlty less annoying children, it's also a bit more secure with your personal info as well. http://www.3news.co.nz/PlayStation-users-data-stolen---credit-cards-at-risk/tabid/412/articleID/208754/Default.aspx.

Now if you want it for both gaming and movies etc, go with the PS3. First off, obviously the PS3 has a blu-ray player which means pretty high def pictures (providing you have a pretty high def TV). Also blu-ray extras are way better than the standard ones you get on DVD's. Now if you're a bit of a Pirate both consoles will play movies off external hardrives however I know for a fact that 360's cannot play mkv, while i'm pretty sure PS3's can. Now mkv is a format which is becoming more and more popular due to it's high quality and low file size for pirated movies. Either way go PS3 if you want to use it for this as well. Note: I do not condone the pirating of copy righted material.

As for visual quality of gaming it self, that depends on your TV and what the specific game was designed to be played in, a more powerful system means piss all in this sense if it's the graphics you wanted to see improved by getting a PS3, simply put the games look the same on both formats how good they look depends on your TV. Most games accross both consoles will have something like this 720p/1080i/1080p on the back meaning they can be best played in these formats, what they don't tell you is what this means and what the game was designed in. Most games for the current generation are 720p and when you play them on 1080p they are upscaled by the console it doesn't actually make the game look any better and is only useful if your TV is over 40". Ignore 1080i while most digital TV is transmitted in this format it's not good for any fast paced gaming.

As for games themselves, that could be the decider for you. Are there any games you love that are only on a single console? or are you going towards games live CoD which are available on everything. If there's a specific game you really want to play only on one console go for that, most other games are avaialble on 360 or PS3.

So basically if you're gaming centric go 360, more home entertainment inlcined go PS3. Or if you wait a year the next gens will probably be arriving in time for X-mas 2013. (Oh and as people have mentioned the latest version of both PS3 and 360 are both far lass likely to breakdown on ya.)
