Is Bodybuilding a Sport?

I was thinking about this issue in the shower this morning. I may have to retract my previous comment... on reflection, gymnastics events aren't known for their crowd-pulling abilities either. Although possibly more popular than bodybuilding, it's still not exactly the kind of event that demands a new stadium be built to house the masses!

Even so, you have to agree - seeing Ronnie Coleman do a triple cartwheel and backflip would be amazing (to say the least!)

This thread is crack up. I wonder if my fellow Oly lifter on here is going to pipe in.

If you want an answer from me, I highly respect the dedication of Bodybuilders, the training that takes place, the difficulty of posing while absolutely tired. However, my answer would be that bodybuilding is more akin to a Male Beauty Pagaent than a sport.

Sorry, was busy applying tan to my buttocks.

Can someone who knows the system tell me a little bit about the judging that takes place. Do judges follow the same 'set of rules' by which they judge the competition or is it 'on the day' kinda thing? To be a judge in bodybuilding do you have to have some sort of credentials or level of qualification?

correct. if you SERIOUSLY think big muscled guys in tiny G-strings, oiled up and showing their asses to screaming men is a legitimate sport akin to the NFL or Olympic games then i'd advise you immediately to leave these boards, dispose of every bodybuilding magazine, pink dumbell and wriststrap in your possession and make an appointment to see a psychiatric doctor where you can further safely elaborate on your ideas.

considering the latest world 'champion' is a big idiot(refrigerator with arms) full of steroids with a life expectancy of 47, no the word sport doesn't come to mind sorry

shit i buy the magazines all the time. and of course i know those guys put in shit loads of work. and yes i lift weights, and yes i am aware it involves immense levels of skill and determination to build a body.

i like bodybuilding. i just dont think its a sport.

its like wrestling, whenever people ask me what sports do i watch i never say wwe because deep down inside i know its all just a fantasy. such a shame, but thats life.

i dont say duhhh bodybuilding either, because do you really think the judges are going to look at 20 different guys asses or pecs or deltoids and know the difference other than the best and worst they basically just make the rest up. the other thing is, like wwe, if someone does something that pisses off certain people they may no longer have an equal chance to win. thirdly, they fucking try to dance to music, melvin anthony is supposedly one of the top bodybuilders around because he can wiggle his ass in more ways than victor martinez. thirdly, they wear costumes like superman and phantom of the opera for gods sake, what the hell kind of "sport" is this.

so to answer the original question, is bodybuilding a sport, well i think i just voiced my ignorant opinion on the matter
