Creatine + medical profession...

So I'm guessing this is a pretty familiar story...

Had some tests lately and creatinine come back high/eGFR of 56.

After explaining exactly how much creatine I'd been supplementing with the GP was still keen to do kidney, liver and bladder ultrasound; all of which was sweet.

A second round of tests after a week off creatine and eGFR was reported >90 (actual figure not reported).

So at this stage the GP had a chat with the renal specialist and and the renal spec. advised that I should nonetheless discontinue creatine supplementation.

I'm now waiting for a consult with the renal spec.

Rather unhelpfully I've no idea the basis for the renal spec. advising as s/he did but what should I anticipate in the consult? After an hour of rage-googling for studies and meta-studies all I can find is some guy with one kidney seemingly having a problem. Note I don't do long distance running in the desert...

It's very frustrating going through this typical scenario. I don't want to disregard the specialist but is their anything genuine to be concerned about? Pretty keen to 'win the internets' when I have the consult assuming a lack of valid concerns.

Dosage now at 4g on training day (sizeon) and 3g on non-training days, at 72kg and 1.78m

I had a full blood test done a while ago, first time giving dodgy results even though at the time I was on a really low dose of creatine. I explained it to the doc and she actually recommended me to go off it for at least 2~3 weeks before trying to get tested again because shes known for it to report false positives. So 2 weeks later I went in again, didn't note the figures but she said everything was perfect.

Mind you, take care in other supplements you're taking which may have added creatine especially pre/intra workouts and certain protein 'blends'.

Cliffs : 1 week off is probably not enough to clear it out of your system

At the time of the first batch of tests I was alternating between NO Shotgun and Nutratech Rage, both of which contain some amount of creatine. Now it is just Superpump Max stacked with SizeOn (4g creatine/serve). WPC unadulterated.

After getting the first results I checked my records and my protein intake was prolly on the high side - avg 250g per day at 70kg.

In the week leading up to the second tests I cut out creatine from all supps and moderated protein a touch to 200g-225g. The resulting tests were sweet as including urine proteins (which were also sweet first time around).

So it all looks good to me. Maybe the specialist is just taking some standard textbook 'better safe than sorry' approach or assuming undisclosed massive dosing. I dunno... clutching at straws for possible rationales.

happens to everyone. if you lift weights regularly or have more muscle mass than the average everyday person then your creatanine levels will likely be elevated.

THIS.......!!!

I had issues with raised creatinine about 4 years back as part of my medical examinations for Immigration New Zealand... It cost me $1000's in private medical tests to prove I wasn't dying of liver or kidney failure....

It was finally shown to be attributed to a high protein diet, plus creatine supplementation....

If you want to pass their test, lay off creatine for a couple of weeks and stay off protein and just eat veggies, fruit, fruit juices and water 48hrs prior to your test....
