Don't buy disposables.

But, do buy some shaving OIL that you put on, either alone or as an undercoat for the gel. I get no irritation and almost no cuts now. Head shaving, that is.

I am using a 5 blade.

The King of Shaves had a good one, but I can't find the blades for it now. Was a flexible handled one, that look slike a slingshot. That was good money spent.

I kinda thought the same, but was wondering why he'd ask for "in Auckland" if that was the case

If you are asking for razor suggestions... I use Double-edge (DE) safety razors, have done for a couple of years:

You have to learn how to use them properly, as it can get pretty messy if you don't know what you're doing (first couple of attempts I looked like I'd shaved with a blunt steak knife). But there are plenty of good tutorials out there.

Once you get the hang of it, you get a closer shave, and I get far less irritation than I did with the "normal" shavers. I'd suggest irritation can be based on your skin though, and what kind of cream/other products you use (or don't use) on it. Also learn which way the hair grows in certain areas, shaving across or against the grain can cause more irritation if you don't do it properly (same goes for all razors). Basically... learn to shave properly.

Bonus is, after a fair outlay where you need to buy the razor itself (maybe $70-100 for a decent starter?), you only need to buy blades from there on out. Maybe a brush and some cream too if you want to get into the wet shaving side, which kinda goes hand-in-hand with DE shaving IMHO. Blades last 3+ shaves (depending on which brand you get), some are sharper than others (you'll want to start with a milder one), but they are dirt cheap - waaaay cheaper than buying the multi-bladed ones. And they don't clog! The cost was what made me change initially, I knew there must be a cheaper way of doing it - I think $20+ for 4 replacement cartridges that only lasted 3 shaves before they were entirely clogged was the final straw for me

For DE shaving, a 100 pack of Derby blades (which I thought were an excellent starter - still use them from time to time), only costs $30 NZD. Each one of these lasted me about 5 shaves, so if you do the math, that's 500 shaves, or 6 cents a shave

I dunno about everyone else, but I shave maybe twice a week? So if one blade lasts me a fortnight, and I bought 100, you'd only go through 26 a year. It'd take you a good 4 years to get through $30 worth of blades

Look at The Shaveden if you want more info - not just on getting started with DE shaving, but shaving in general.

And there is an NZ online store, Man Cave, which sells all of the products you need.

Been doing it for a couple of years now, so glad I switched

What drizzt said...

If you do go the disposable route, I can recommend the Shick Hydro 5 blade for a good shave. I shave my head with it as well as my face. I can only stomach buying the cartridges when they are on special though, such a rip...
