Building a gaming rig; GTFIH computer enthusiasts

Chur brahs,

I've built my previous computer before about two years ago, was happy with it until it got smashed one day by a mad Dad and since for a few months I've been browsing the innunet on my phone or a crappy netbook.

My previous set up was good to play most games at full settings. MW2 and Black Ops would hit around 50FPS on a 1024x768 monitor. It cost me around $1200

Specs of previous computer:

CPU - Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz dual core with Hyperthreading (4 virtual cores) $200-300 Got an aftermarket cooler for about $80

Motherboard - Asus P7H55-M LGA 1156 socket $200-300

Graphics card - HIS Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 $280

RAM - 2 x 2GB RAM DDR3 1366 some crappy brand $160

Case and power supply - Crap combo deal powersupply was rated 400W. $200

Hard drive - 500GB 7200RPM $120 approx

OS - Pirated version of Windows 7 Ultimate, freeeeeeeee. No disadvantages apart from an annoying popup every few hours

Now I want to build a new gaming rig, this one will be siiick.

Dream rig specs:

CPU - Intel Core i7 3820. Sandy Bridge architecture with quad core 3.6GHz with Turboboost up to 3.8GHz. Hyperthreading capable (8 virtual cores) $449

Core+i7+3820.jpg

CPU Cooling - Water cooling $150-$200

watercooling2.jpg

Motherboard - Unsure yet, necessary features include full ATX form factor, quad channel, decent overclocking features, SLI or Crossfire capable $300-400

EVGA-s-X79-FTW-LGA-2011-Motherboard-Now-Available-in-Retail.jpg

Graphics card - Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 or NVIDIA GeForce 560Ti $400

AMD+Radeon+HD+6970+Graphics+Card.jpg

Gigabyte-GeForce-GTX-560-Ti-1GHz-clocked-Graphics-card.jpg

RAM - 16GB (4x 4GB) G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1866 $249

Gskill%20RipJawsZ-380-75.jpg

Case - NZXT Phantom full tower White/Red $249

6a0120a75749b7970b0133f30487cd970b-800wi

Power supply - 600W 80+ certified any brand $200-300

Monitor - 23" LED 1920x1080 $250

Hard drive - SSD 60 GB for dat dere sub 10 second boot time. $160

Secondary hard drive - SATA 3.5" internal 1TB for dat dere porn collection $200

Comes to about $2200 - 2500. Also gonna get some LEDs to soup it up

I'd be interested to hear y'all dream rigs

will you ever be getting a 2nd video card? if not then an SLI or crossfire capable mobo might be a bit of a waste, in saying that most performance ones will have either options....just saying, cross fire is a bit better IMO unless you're willing to fork out money for 2 top of the range nvidia video cards (obv they got to be exact ones), SSD hdds are mainly good for your OS to boot on, from a few reviews i've had they can fail more than the standard sata hdds...but that's from dudes who tweak every single bit of the pc they own, have you looked at running raid 0 and keeping your OS on the SSD? keep in mind unlike the other raids with 0 if one HDD fucks out or even if your raid controller dies (or you get changed to using another raid controller via another mobo) then your raid is useless

RE: 2nd video card

Probably not, but then again, in the future I may decide buying another old video card is cheaper and more effective than purchasing a recent high end card so I'd like to keep my options open. Yeah, I read that some SLI configurations dont' give much carryover from a single card.

Not too familiar with RAID. I'd be willing to look into it though I'm not too concerned with it. If I have an SSD for performance and frequently accessed programs, why would I need a RAID 0 configuration anyway for my SATA hard drive where most of it's gonna be data where performance is not going to be of much importance? If I had two SATA disks, I'd be more likely to go for a RAID 1 configuration for back up, although most of the data I store would not be of significant value anyway so that would just be a waste of space.

SSDs being more likely to fail may be from them being fairly new on the scene but now that they're quite mature, I highly doubt that they'll be any less reliable than a standard SATA HDD. Also since there are no moving parts I thought you were less likely to 'break' it when you drop it. Are you sure that the reviews you have read are not a few years old?

Id go Nvidia over ATI personally, SLI if budget allows. Would def include an SSD for the OS & program files. 128GB is enough. Just have a few games installed at any one time. I'll never run a desktop with out an SSD again. Ive never had issues with 3 PCs either

i7 would be great but you can get away with less if you dont want to fork out. Especially if you OCing. Water cooling pretty cheap these days and lets you OC the shit out of everything. Also don't skimp on the mobo.

If you're srs about gaming then it wont be cheap but doesnt need to cost a fortune. You want to be gaming at higher than 1024x768 though.

I don't have a current gaming rig. Haven't for a few years now but I keep up with the latest. I have a dedicated home theatre pc and a main rig I do everything else on as well as a netbook. Both desktops are running i3 processors.

Yeah you def want to get a 1080-capable display of some kind!

Nice bro, any issues getting it running?

Not at all, the 3.5" installation was a bit tricky though. Not a smart design.

but you have a lot of experience dealing with objects of 3.5" or less so it was no challenge for you right?

lol get a proper computer desk. or do u sit on the floor and play ( no racial)? LOL.

he squats on the floor and plays (no racial) :pfft:

(maybe racial)
