Which city - Auckland ?

I wouldn't go near some of the "label" shops - most of the folks in them aren't trained.... down here I get great results in an independent menswear shop where the guys know exactly how to pick a jacket and trousers to start from, then take things in/ let things out.

Rembrandt and Cambridge both do "separates" where you can pick a jacket and matching trousers that fit, rather than the "standard" off-the-peg 104 jacket means only 90 trousers or whatever...

Munns is pretty good but the best I've found anywhere in New Zealand is RJB on High Street in the CBD. Ronald is the man.

Made to measure and bespoke but be aware the cost is in line with the quality of fabric and workmanship. They also tailor off the rack stuff which is still very nice and a step down in price. Always get a second pair of trousers as you'll  in 5 years if you don't.

If you keep an eye on those daily sales websites there is an Auckland based bunch of tailors that keep showing up. Here's an expired example:http://www.dailydo.co.nz/auckland/suitmaster136562

I've not seen their product but $400 made to measure at your home/work might be something to look at.

I had a couple tailor-made last time I was in Bali. $80 for a suit and pants lol. They'll copy any style you want \:D/

There are online tailors too who you send your measurements to and they tailor you a suit but I dunno how good they are... Prob best avoided

You don't need an expensive suit to look good. You need a well fitted one.

When i first joined the corporate sector I thought expensive = better look. Not so, a mid range priced suit tailored it perfect imo.

Diabolic, what's the quality like? 80 might be a tad on the cheap side lol

I picked up a couple of suits in Phuket and a bunch of shirts. Yeah it's cheap as but the stitching is shithouse but it can take a few wears before it becomes evident unless you've seen dodgy previously. Nice fabrics all but the workmanship makes it a bit of a waste of time.

The holy grail of awesome-for-cheap is a holy grail.

Diab0lic: How have those suits worked out for ya?

I've only worn them a few times each and keep them hanging in a suit bag so they are still gtg. The stitching is pretty good, that's one of then things we looked for when we were choosing a tailor. As you say they all have access to good quality cheap fabric over there so it comes down to the workmanship, which in this case was good. I'm not expecting them to last forever but I always get comments about them being nice suits and a good fit so it was worth it in the end. I do have a couple of nicer suits too but I paid a lot mroe for them (in NZ).

$80 ea was after some serious haggling!

Agree with these shops, even the 80NZD ones from thailand (they can be really good) - they're quite good, especially with separates. Generally speaking, I have looked into many 'off the rack' options in newmarket (there are about 10 shops there!!). Just the 'choice' you have is a rather disappointing.

There's an auction on Trademe now, probably worth a look.

They're also giving free time-limited consultations.

If u serious, go check it out before it disappears...

Just an update,

Went into Munns today, good experience!

The women knew what she was doing and i was in a out in a hour.

Suit has been sent away for tailoring and will pick up Thurs.

Jacket + Pants + Shirt + Tailoring = $850

Would recommend Munns anytime!

Century 21 in New York was the best I had experienced. Name branded, tailored, and factory-outlet-cheap. I went for a couple of winter coats instead of suits as I don't need any more suits atm. Both coats were $150 USD, down from $500-550 to give an idea of the sort of cost-reductions there.

Definitely leaving a day, plenty of room in the suitcase (and lots of money :pfft:) for Century 21 next time I'm over those ways

I have a Munns suit, although it was pre-powerlifting days so I'm probably well out of range of it now  Very good though, and lasted a few years.
