bodybuilding, really the hardest sport in the world?

Recommended Posts

Heard from who? Bodybuilding wouldn't even come close, in my mind at least.

ive heard that bodybuilding is the hardest sport in the world? why?

It's not really a sport as such....kinda like crossfit isn't...

I know that's just a cheeky dig  Pretty easy to argue that Crossfit is more of a sport than bodybuilding. Actually having physical competition/performance and all...

That line is bandied around because to compete at bodybuilding successfully at even a regional level it requires intense dedication 24/7 in the lead up to the competition.

It's so restricting with its dieting requirements, you can't go eat out at restaurants like other normal people and other athletes. Theres generally no drinking of alcohol, certainly no binge drinking (aye NZHREDDER! :pfft: ).

In the lead up to the competition you have to drink huge amounts of water, starve yourselve of food then limit your water levels to unsafe levels while at a bodyfat level below a sustainable level. It really is pushing your body to the extremes.

But I would argue the bodybuilding is perhaps more an Art than a sport. And I think most bodybuilding are proud of their ability to push through the tough parts of it and actually enjoy the prep a little bit :shifty:

Accepting the notion that it is a sport (I would contend too that its an art), it would still be a stretch to view it as the hardest sport in the world.

Whilst even to do reasonably at a lesser level (amateur comps etc) requires immense dedication etc, if we are looking at the sport hardest v hardest then you should consider the extremes - and to reach all top levels of sport requires immense dedication in the professional age.

Say like Gymnastics for example at the top level, compared with Olympia winners, it requires the same training hours, the same dieting, the same physical abuse, however Gymnastics is technically harder. You have to perfect things like triple back flips, be strong enough to hold crosses on the rings, whilst still remaining flexible enough to do the splits . Body building however, is just repeating the same, what you do, bicep curl, squatting etc - none of it really changes the better you get besides the weight moved obviously.

(Just my 2c anyway)

Physical art

Sports have many affinities with art. For example, figure skating, drum corps, skateboarding, artistic gymnastics, dancesport, and T'ai chi can be considered artistic spectacles. Similarly, there are other activities that have elements of sport and art in their execution, such as bodybuilding, free running, martial arts, professional wrestling, performance art, yoga, dressage, and culinary arts. Perhaps the best example is bull-fighting, which in Spain is reported in the arts pages of newspapers.

I think this sums it up pretty well

its certainly the least financially rewarding.

& argueably the most expensive :D

No way.....

Powerlifting must be the most expensive...

Thats why its such a small sport....

lol pretty sure heaps of other sports are way more expensive e.g. motorsport

This is from my own personal experience but preparing for my first bodybuilding comp was the hardest thing ive done.

ive training hard befor but its when you take in the diet part everything becomes that little more extreme. like what soundsgood said you arent normal ya cant go out, ya cant drink, your starving most of the time and trying to train like you used to when you actually did eat..

ive dont half marathons, triathons, and a half iron man.. way different ball game as what you eat and drink keeps you going.. more actively forcing yourself to eat while competing..

BB the hardest in my mind.. is it a sport mmm in the end your competiting with yourself..

I dunno - a triple-twenty's always a triple-twenty, which makes it clearer to decide who wins

In bodybuilding, so much can be incredibly subjective: are the judges favouring mass or condition ? Will a shredded little 'un beat a bloated mass-monster ?

Guess that make darts easier :pfft:

I would say for the effort, money, time, pain, supplements, drugs, reward, eating, dieting,.... that you do yes for sure. In most sport you are gone and dead at 25 bodybuilding you are not peaking until you are in your late 30's early 40's :)

Sweet there is still hope for MT yet \:D/

Most sports require that discipline mind you, i'd say MMA or fighting sports in general would be pretty intense/hard to be an elite at in terms of effort, money, time, pain, supplements, drugs, reward, eating, dieting if you don't put the effort in out of the ring you get hurt or dead.

Good topic anyways.

I would say yes bodybuilding would be the hardest sport and the most expensive sport like dieting for a show for the cost of food, supplements and dream etc including not able to go out with friends etc when one is dieting down for a show.Other sports like WWE would be another hard sport guys like John Cena,Triple H,Undertaker etc putting there bodies on the line each night with high risk of injury in any type of match like normal, steel cage, hell in cell,TLC aka Tables, ladders chairs etc plus not to mention all the traveling what they including all the pay per views.
