prep person

Recommended Posts

Are you limiting this to a specific geographical area?

Otherwise you'd be talking the likes of IFB Pro trainers like Charles Glass, Hany Rambod etc

Also in Australasia ex-IFB Pro Jon Davies is getting an awesome name for producing quality athletes. He does online stuff as well, as does his offsider Ali who I know coaches one top NZL Figure girl.

Locally there are a few names I'd put forward, but then I'd probably offend a bunch of people paying big money for fuckall knowledge! :pfft:

Seriously tho, I'd be going for someone with a track record both themselves (IMO you cannot coach an elite BBer without having experienced what they go through physically & mentally preping for a show) and with their athletes.

In NZL that list isn't very long.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts.....

hi all

who would the best person to go to for contest pre with no BS

and why would you use them

Living in Wgtn just go see Jo Ulberg.

Former Mr NZ and after a long break came in pretty sharp at last years Nationals...he's been at the top in NZ and can still deliver results.

Plus he's a Les Mills trainer so he's relatively cheaper than some know-all flying solo. Extreme value for money.

It depends on what you want from them. If you want someone you can see at the drop of a text, there are only 2-3 guys in Welly's that come to mind. Then there is the whole of NZ, where there's the option of travelling to see them over the weekend and that only opens up by another handful of guys.

If you're super serious then there's the international option that nate provided...$$$$$$$$$$$$$

In wellington you have Big Darryn Onekawa and his wife Jamie both Mr/Mrs NZ and both IFBB Pro's and they have just started their own training nutrition business one thing that stands out about the Onekawa's is that Moe El Moussawi coaches Big D so you know what Darryn is telling you is not only from his own 18 years + experience but from NZ top bodybuilder and Olympia top 8 athlete aswell!! Darryn is a real nice guy and will happily take you under his wing as long as you show you are self motivated, dedicated and serious about getting results and take responsibilty for your own results. PM him or Jamie on Facebook.

This was something very much discussed by a bunch of people at a comp I just went to over here in sydney.

My 2c is that the person has a good track record.. with clients! Honestly it doesn't matter so much what they themselves have achieved but definitely they should have competed to understand the client perspective. What experience has taught me is that often guys who are very competitively successful don't actually know that much, they are a product of great genetics and hard work.. (sometimes not even that much hard work tbh).

They should be able to (and happy to) explain the WHY's behind what they are getting you to do and they should work with you not just tell you what do. There is an element of instruction but if you are invested in your prep and understand the why's behind what you are doing, it is so much easier to follow.

If you can find someone local who you can actually see then that's your absolute best bet. There are some great prep guys around but well, pics and stuff only get you so far and if you don't have the experience yourself you want someone more accessible.

I would also say that the mental and motivational part of prep is the MOST important thing, so if you don't like someone or you find yourself at odds with their ideas and strategies, then DON'T use them. It is important to have positive and an uplifting prep coach. Yeah they need to honest and sometimes brutally so, BUT you need to enjoy interacting with them and feel some positive value in your interaction.

I am such a hippy lol...

 Couldn't agree more. And that goes for PTs of all levels.

I actually think the WHY is more important than the WHAT. It shows you that the PT has done extended research, rather than just learning by rote. It also means that rather than relying on your PT to spoonfeed you everything, you become empowered to start thinking about it yourself. Then you can take the general idea (the "why") and find multiple ways of executing it (the "what").

This is a must for me aswell. But it is a personal choice whether this is important to you.

Personally I have to know and trust someone extremely well before I let them tell me what to do. I am very dependent on the "why's" and am really picky about the level of explanation required in my "why's". Which makes me an aweful client to be quite honest. (Which is why I choose not to be a client)

The other problem here is that the bodybuilding world is small and it is difficult to chop and change with trainers and who you go to because people can SOMETIMES get sore about it and there is alot of respect etiquette revolving around this.

The main consensus is that if you are going to go with a well known trainer from the area you have to choose one trainer and stick with them.

I don't know if Justin Rys does contest prep for people or what he is like in that area but he has helped me with loads of questions I have had and he is BS free in my opinion.

Inb4 I offend all of wgtns trainers with one post....

Well Philly and joe are supposed to only train trough les mills so you would have to be a member here to have training from them.

Darryn and Jamie are independent of les mills and aren't allowed to 'train people' here like Philly and Joe do.

So it depends on the level of involvement you are looking for and if you are looking more for a training program and a diet to go through in your own time (Darryn) rater than hourly paid personal training taking you through the workout and pushing you each session (Joe or Philly)
