NABBA South Island Bodybuilding Champs, Dunedin

It was quite an enjoyable show. I'd never been to a night show before, only the day time judging rounds so it was good to get more of the entertainment factor.

The class of athletes was really mixed, a few in top notch condition, most looking quite good, but also quite a lot that looked like they had missed the mark by a fair bit.

The fitness model classes were entertaining enough, some impressive feats from the girls, and quite a theatrical boxing demonstration from the only male.

Masters physique was a well contested class, good to see Graeme Evans from Sky Fitness take it out over a much larger Brett Cullen, there was really no question when it came to conditioning. Graeme looked fantastic, Brett had great size and shape but just not quite lean enough, probably targeting nationals?

The Teenage Men was contested by 3 athletes all from Sky Fitness, which made the pose down quite entertaining as they're all mates. All 3 could make a splash in the future if they continue to pursue bodybuilding

Shape was the only class where I truly disagreed with the judges, Teresa Edwards took it out and I really didn't think she looked that great at all, no where near as good as Susan Baxter who looked very fit and toned, good muscle definition but definitely not too much, or any vascularity etc, thought she looked stunning but the judges gave it to the one, who in my opinion, had the inferior physique with breast implants. It honestly seemed like that's why she won, spoke to a few others who agreed. :-s

Junior Men had the most athletes of any class which was good to see, all deserving to be up on stage, conditioning definitely sealed the placings here. As soon as Alex Spenceley walked out on stage their was no doubt in my mind he was going to win. Great physique, looked like a bronze roman sculpture, crazy muscle belly fullness and good separation.

All the figure classes kinda blended into one in my memory, no one standing out as extraordinary, but also no one looking like they didn't belong. Would have been some of the harder classes to judge.

Only one in Novice physique short, and honestly I wasn't impressed. Plenty of size on him, but conditioning was crap. Looked to be around 12-13% bf at a guess :? physique tall was well contested though, Shannon Fraser the clear winner but the rest was hard to pick. Tengo Kandelaki picked up 3rd being the smallest guy in the line up by far, but had a great shape to him and really quite lean, great V taper.

Novice athletic were 2 more quite clear cut classes, Mathew Curtis winning the short and Mike Smith winning tall. Mathew has made an impressive transformation this year, starting it quite overweight, and coming in cut to pieces, probably one of the leanest in the whole show. Another stand out was Stefan Freeth or 'Freezma' who got 3rd in the tall class, his shape actually reminded me a bit of Arnolds, really solid upper body and small waist, great V taper. With a bit more muscle on his frame and coming in a bit leaner I really think he could do well in the future.

Open Figure was an impressive class, all 3 looked great. A really tough call between 1st and 2nd, Janine Haywood taking 1st and Cassandra Chow taking 2nd, both had fantastic conditioning, better than most of the males. Cassandra even had hints of striated glutes from the side

Open Athletic wasn't as impressive as I was hoping, both looked good but no where near the conditioning you'd expect to see in this class.

Picking the overall male physique winner would have been the hardest judging call of the night I think, it came down to Graeme Evans masters winner, Shannon Fraser Novice tall winner, and Alex Spencely the junior mens winner. All great physiques and well deserving, but also very different physiques. Graeme reminiscent of the 50s and 60s bodybuilders, Shannon packing a tonne of size and looking grainy, and Alex as I said earlier like a roman sculpture. Shannon ended up taking out the overall, the whole time the judges were comparing them I really couldn't pick it, great class :)

And of course Sky Fitness took out best gym by a landslide \:D/

That's my (rather long :shifty: ) impression of the competition. Well done to everyone who competed, and if I've offended anyone, deal with it

Damn Phedder, I wish I'd waited a little longer before starting to type up my report, woulda saved me a lot of time  You nailed it, pretty much exactly what I had. There's nothing there that I'd disagree on (particularly Teresa's win...have to admit, I was tempted to give it to her too just for the boobs and ass  )

Ditto the call for overall physique...mass vs golden age of BB vs condition. I was confident I'd picked right, but not quite enough to bet the farm on it. Either way it was gonna be Powertech/Sky for 1st & 2nd.

Fitness Model grew from 1 entrant last year to 4 this year (including Dan), have to say I'd like to see that rate of growth continue, just for the entertainment factor.

Open athletic...maybe Dali will be convinced to train his legs now :pfft: I think he coulda taken Ferg with his upper body condition, but his legs were completely smooth, kinda cylindrical. Although, on the plus side, at least he made it to the end of the show this time, without having to be escorted off

All in all, organisationally, a massive improvement over last year's show. No cock-ups with the music, and an MC for the night show. Really my only two niggles were that given the temperature in that hall (fricken hot, with no AC) some refreshment options other than hot coffee might have been a good idea... and where the hell were the free samples from the sponsors??? I was looking forward to coming home with all the freebies I could carry :pfft: but not a sponsor's table in sight.

I also thought it was big improvement from last years show with no problems with the music. There was good choice of music being played during the pre judging expect for Brooke Fraser which I thought was a bit boring any song from the Feelers or etc plus there was some good choice of music by the athletes ranging from ACDC to time to play the game by Motor Head.I thought the temputer in the hall was bit hot plus I was thinking somebody forgot to turn on the AC on :naughty: .I was looking forward to bring home some free stuff.I was surprised to see a former co worker of mine competing in the show plus I got checked out by her as well which made me feel a bit :shifty: .

Anyway.. Good stuff flamer, how long did you train for that as you had a break didn't you?

Smithells how did you go?

Been picking away at training for last 4 years, mainly focusing on shoulders & lats. Still more work to do. Last 3 months was when I decided to really up the ante.
