Too much protein?

Apparently the more protein you eat, the longer the stomach takes to digest it..... It sort of hangs around in the digestive tract till its digested...

Once digested the body decides how it is utilised... (or rather how the individual amino acids are utilised)....

Different foods are absorbed at different rates:

Eggs 2.9g/hour

Milk 3.5g/hour

Casein 6.1g/hour

Whey Isolate 8-10g/hour

Its not really about Protein as such, but really the individual amino acids, especially Leucine which is responsible for protein synthesis, but they all play a part....

read somewhere excessive protein intake can lead to kidney stones? any forum members experienced this? would be hard to pin the cause down to just protein alone - but maybe its more frequent within the BB community.. ?

Fuaaarrr. All good, just adds to bodyweight when you're doing bodyweight exercises!

A lot of shit on the internet is broscience, for the last 4 month's I changed my aproach to dieting & went against everything everyone said. The main goal in my mind each day diet wise is to consume 300g of protein. Whether it be in 3 meal's or 6.

Going slightly off topic here but another thing that f*ck's me off is peoples approach to protein shakes? The whole - If you add liquid to them you'll denture the protein if not drunk within 30 minutes! is a load of BS. Every day I prep a shake with 100g+ protein, 15g BCAA, 15g Glutamine and drink it through the day. I'm still gaining like a mofo.

Don't beleive everything you read & learn how to listen to your body.

Of course people gain on just 3 times a day, shoot if a vegan bodybuilder can gain surely anyone can, the body is amazing!

But the keyword is "optimal" and it's got real science behind it. But gains are gains good on ya for finding what works for u and your goals re: growth

A good example of not optimal protein intake is when you use too much whey protein in one sitting. Anyone ever notice how their urine is darker in colour after having too much whey? Our digestive systems can only handle so much protein in one go, and with whey protein it's not very much really... being a powder it has a massive surface area compared to meat for example.. over a certain limit your body needs to process it and get rid of it. What happens is that the nitrogen is cleaved off the amino acids and excreted in the urine as uric acid and the carbon skeletons are then processed as energy.

The reason lions for example can eat 5kg of meat in one go is because they can't chew their meat.. they swallow whole chunks... this slows down the absorbtion a great deal and allows them to have to eat only once a day. Nice little Discovery Channel tidbit for you fellas. :D

Consuming excessive amounts of protein is not only bad for your liver and kidneys but also promotes vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It is also linked to osteoporosis and some forms of cancer.

I thought they dispelled that a while ago. used to be that it created calcium deficiencies in rats. but when they tested it with rats that exercised the exercise promotes denser bone etc which offsets any problems. So the first study was kinda flawed for bodybuilders anyway...I thought, maybe I'm wrong

sure Harry, don't chew... if you want to be a bloated mess. We humans need to chew our food... we have molars for that purpose. I was just trying to make the point that the surface area of the food we eat greatly affects the absorption times. if the surface area is very high... there's no point eating too much in one go. you just can't digest it all.

In a sedentary person with crappy kidneys maybe. In someone young(ish), active, who drinks plenty of water, has a pretty good diet otherwise (vitamin supps, etc too) and has decent muscle mass, these do not really apply

lol.. I actually eat comparitively small amounts of protein for my bw and size. I have eaten upwards of 500gms/day but now eating half that I find my recovery is fine and training etc goes how I want it to go. I also don't feel bloated and sluggish all the time like I did with a very high protein diet.

Nothing to do with the idea that it affects my kidneys I just got sick of gagging down loads of protein.

There an old saying that goes, "Too much of anything is never a good thing" and in some way it rings true.

I have read and learned as well about the effects too much protein can have on the body but i think it think the dilemma here is that one person might now be scared to take too much with the idea platned that your kidneays and liver can fail. In a nutshell yes it can happen but it will take decades for your organs to go awry form too much protein intake. For any type of intake for that matter.

But i mean, come on and use your brain and educate yourself. If you starting out bb and weigh fuckin 60kg dont go and eat 500g of protein a day, you just askin for trouble. I believe one of the members on here has posted multiple times of him taking 300-400g protein even though he only weighs 80 odd kg. I think still that might be a bit much. All im sayin is be smart about your macro intake. It could mean the difference in having a successfull bb career or even just a real nice looking frame(no home) and live to tell the tale. Anyway just my opinion. Take or leave it, i realy dont give a shit.
