meal frequency, metabolism and fat storage.

Also eating different macro ratios will have a difference on metabolism, 60c/20p/20f will have a different effect on the body than 20c/60p/20f. Also I believe that total calories a day is probably the most important factor in weight gain/loss, although if your eating 5000+ calories a day that would be pretty hard to get in over 1 or 2 meals (unless your TWL where one of your meals is 5000cals  )

imo it makes no (little?) difference however i spread my macros out across the day at around 3 hour intervals. I do this not because the 'old school eat every three hour thing' but because I find it easy to get the food in. Not a fan of the feeling of being stuffed and munching away on a huge meal 3 x a day for 30 mins.

same reason as agentO for me, i find it really difficult to get all those required calories in for mass gains with that traditional 3 meals a day plan. to do it reasonably healthily, need more like 5 or 6 meals so i can do it without getting completely stuffed

... now the next part is all just my broscience but i believe your body does have some kind of limit as to how much protein it can use (to build all that lean muscle) at any one sitting, whatever that number is probably is unique for everyone but say for example you 'needed' 250g of protein per day, that's approx 80 grams per meal if its just over 3 meals. i THINK you have to be super dianabolic to be able to utilise all of that. whatever your body ends up not using/storing in the liver(?), it will store as fat(?) or just send it to the dumpster.

i think fat is probably real similar in regards, it is pretty health to eat a certain amount but say you ate too much fat in each meal rather than spreading it out in smaller 'doses', it'll probably end up being stored somewhere the sun dont shine

Its not really about Protein as such, but really the individual amino acids, especially Leucine which is responsible for protein synthesis, but they all play a part....

I'm the exact opposite, I hate 'grazing' all day on 6+ meals that don't really satisfy me. Nothing better than sitting down to a feast and relaxing for a bit, then getting on with the day.

Calories and Macros are what matter. Nothing else is really worth worrying about imo until those are sorted. I do believe that post workout nutrition is important, but aside from that eat as frequently or infrequently as you desire and that fits your lifestyle.
