Bodybuilding/weight training and insecurity

I was reading a post someone put up about bodybuilding and insecurity. I wonder how many of us started out because we were insecure? I know I didn't and I'm sure a lot of others didn't either. I actually think that in order to continue training and gaining and doing all the things we do requires a lot of self belief and security, cos after a while we work out we sure ain't doing it for the public recognition or even for social acceptance.

Just out of interest I thought I would put this up and see what the feedback on it was. Very general I know but that gives a lot of leeway for commentary.

I kinda did. I mean, Pete got into making his body better and the more I read into bodybuilding, the more interested I got. I was a pretty scrawny kid. I had an above average build but I still felt skinny. I feel pretty happy with how I look at the moment, but I still want to be better.

The happier I am, the better my appetite is. So I just try keep happy with my body. Quite an interesting question actually.

i was 60kg when i first started weight training at the age of 18, im now 100kg at 24 and i still feel small. lol (srs)

Hey Lumpy, you got an insecurity complex............

lol you got it mate! some days are worse than others tho hahaha

btw missed you at ourhouse mate?

Well I don't think that's insecurity, that's more just a desire to continue to improve. I mean whilst I don't think I am big enough or built enough I am definitely not insecure about my physicality or social abilities. I just desire to improve. Hell if a guy always strives to achieve more and more in a work sense or an all black does nothing but eat, drink and sleep rugby no one says he insecure... but a bodybuilder trying to get bigger.. weakminded loser who doesn't know when enough is enough lol

YES ...

Good, interesting to note if you start hating it when you get massive, or I should say more massive.

I'm 44 now & are a leanish 85-88kg depending on diet etc, however I still see that 16 year old in the mirror - Megarexia?

Bro I am 39 and walk around anywhere from 110-120 most of the time, I am bigger than I imagined I would ever be yet I am still that 13 year old kid I was when I started training. I actually like that though... I mean seriously, what else in life have you stuck with for so long? Everytime I train it takes me back there.. love it!

It's funny cos I think that's related to your wanting to improve not a lack of confidence. Having met your bro I know you guys don't lack confidence.

It is weird but it's strangely comfortable as well, I mean I get why runners say running calms them. I hit the gym and everything slips away and it's just me (that kid) training and enjoying it. Sometimes it's harder than others to get that detachment but it always comes for me. Then I walk out feeling relaxed and able to do things better. Plus the discipline I have learnt lets me deal with anything.

That's true, if you can change your body - you can change your life.

The skills are transferable & it's disappointing to see people achieve amazing things physically yet never apply the same principles to other areas of their lives. It's such a waste.

Was skinny as a kid, but not overly insecure.

Maybe being a loud mouthed palagi growing up in Flaxmere started my search for strength - I was never picked on but was always scrapping with bigger guys, and damn there were some big mofo's even at intermediate level I remember guys @ 6'4", and another who weighed 120kg! (I was 30 something kg! :pfft:  ).

I more did it initially cos I liked the look of Arnold, and thought it'd be cool to look similar. I got hooked on the discipline of it all pretty early and saw myself progressing. 23 years later...wait wut! :pfft:

That's how it is now. But I never used to have any confidence in the way I looked. But now I do.

I think I had the most confidence about 2 months after I started the gym, put on about 5kg and toned up. Was happy as, chicks a plenty, tons of attention with everyone asking what my routine was etc... from there on it was just down hill. lol

ha ha ha ha I remember getting to about 85 kilos and getting told that that was big enough and any more would be too much. I think I was 18 lol all positive attention back then.
