whats your lifting calender looking like for this year bro?

Chur chur uce.

Man, it's really hectic - I'm still finalising a few comps or more like which ones I can go to or not :) I have to spend a bit more time on weightlifting training to get a good start to the year - which may be to the determent of my bench and deadlift (my nemesis lol). But still trying to finalise a few comps.

Rough schedule for the first 3-months is:

Jan 19 - BOP SM

Feb 9 - OWNZ Weightlifting

Feb 16-17 - Counties SM

Mar 2 - APA Novice

Gonna be another super busy - but I'll rest when I retire :)

Tues 8th Jan

AM - MIT Strength

Snatch - 135, 135x, 135

C&J - 162mj, 162, 162mc

Stretch

PM - MIT Strength

Snatch Stop Pulls - 135x3x5

Hang Snatch - 128x2x2, 131x2 (PB)

C&J Low Blocks - 162x1x2, 167x1 (PB)

Stretch

Man, AM session was tough! Everything sore and dommed. Speed and technique was good - just tough training through the soreness. PM session was much better - Snatch Stop Pulls were tough doing them first. Happy with PBs on Hang Snatch and C&J from Low Blocks. Body is pretty banged up and the weights go heavier tomorrow. Nutrition has been good over the last week, so that is helping with recovery as well.

4 comps in 3 months?! straight into it aye bro no mucking around..Its been interesting how you've been able to juggle both powerlifting and oly lifting meets or should i say styles of training and yet manage to get some awsome PRs in both disiplines, kudos to you bro

Cheers bro - I love competing aye - it's addictive - getting front of a crowd, pushing your limits and maybe coming out on top. I think I'd rather a competition than a training session lol.

The juggle has been tough - my oly lifts have taken a dive after the big powerlifting phase (last 8-10 weeks) and then now as my deadlift and bench was improving slighty - PL training takes a break lol.

Cheers for the support bro - good to be smashing the iron the same time as you #WORD

the sheer tonnage in this journal must increase our gpp just by reading! lol

question - in terms of your oly side of things, i see you dont do straight ohp much/at all. is ohp generally not done for oly or is it a training cycle thing?

Chur Haydz :)

I hardly do OHP due to my past injuries - I'm always on the back foot with over head stuff. I've had surgery on both shoulders (1999 and 2001) and on my left elbow (2009). It doesn't hurt to OHP, but I'm always in a bad position to press due to mobility issues etc and it affects my wrists when the weight gets heavier.

C&J - 166x1x3

Back Squat - 276x3 - easy

PM - MIT Strength

C&J - 160x1, 166x1, 171x1x3

B1 - GHR - 20x5x4

B2 - Glute Bridge - 160x5x4

Stretch

PHEW! Two tough sessions today - but two really successful sessions. Was beat up from the previous 4 sessions this week and was expecting to have a shocker - but things started to click when I warmed up. A really good indicator going forward - 5 sessions left for the week. Energy is good, sleep is good (though could be better), nutrition is good, motivation is good - everything is going good - I just need to keep the pressure on and don't relax.

Thurs 10th Jan

AM - MIT Strength

Snatch - 135x1x3

C&J - 162x1x3

PM - MIT Strength

Hang C&J - 153x1x3

Clean Pulls - 162x1/2/3/4/5

Snatch from Low Blocks - 135x1x2, 140x1 (PB)

Another two tough sessions - on paper it doesn't look as challenging as previous sessions, but the built up of fatigue made things that much harder to get through. Still though - speed and technique is good. Hitting 140 off Low Blocks on the last lift of the day was good to get. Super tired now.

Fri 11th Jan

AM - MIT Strength

Snatch - 120x1x3

C&J - 144x1x3

Back Squat - 240x3

PM - MIT Strength

Snatch - 145x1, 150xmx3

C&J - 170x1, 180xmx3

ABSOLUTELY SHATTERED!!!! Took me 20mins to put my shoes on before each session and another 20mins to take them off afterwards. Everything super hard today from accumulative fatigue - reminds me of the sessions when I trained with Paul Coffa. Still some good lifts happening.

Check out the numbers for this weeks training:

Total sessions this week = 10 (2 x per day)

Total KGs lifted = 29,100kgs

Average KGs lifted per day = 5,820kgs

Average KGs lifted per session = 2,910kgs

4 x PBs this week :)

**only working sets counted above - no warm up or assistance kgs added #BOOM! **

Really stoked to get through this planned Heavy Week. Happy with my technique and speed this week as well. Strongman training tomorrow :)

Strongman Training - Matt's place

Weight for Height (46lbs/20kgs) - 15ft, 16ftx, 16ft (PB), 16ft 6inx

Log Press (all presses) - 75x1x2, 95x1, 115xm, 115x1 - maybe my opener next week

Farmers Walk - 62.5kg each hand x 10m x 4, 62.5 x 15m x 2

V-Bar Chin Ups - BWx3x8

Good train today - good technical session on the WFH - Matt gave me some good tips. Log Press was ok and Farmers a struggle (even at the light weight). I'm still fatigued from this Heavy Week. Ate a double meat and avocado chicken foot long in 90-secs (PB).

2013 Bay of Plenty Strongest Man - Comp #1 :)

Weight for Height - 12ft, 14ftx, 14ft, 15ft, 16ft, 16ft 6in x m x 3

2nd Place on count back - 16ft felt good and would've clear 16'6" if I threw how I did on 16ft.

Farmers Walk - 27.06s

3rd Place - this felt surprisingly good - I hadn't picked up these implements since 2012 NZSM - grip felt good and speed felt good too.

Tyre Flip - 7-flips :(

4th Place - had a bad day here - hadn't picked up the tyre since 2012 NZSM and it showed. Hands were slipping, tech off and couldn't get in to a rhythm - more work to be done here.

Log Lift - 105kg, 115kg, 125kg, 130kgx

2nd Place - on bodyweight - this felt ok but no where near as comfortable as in 2012. Still only 5kg under my PB - so a good base to work off.

Looking forward to putting more time behind my strongman to improve at the 2013 NZSM.

My training partner (105) is hitting 110/130 powers like it's nothing. Hoping it bodes well for the first oly comp of the year on Feb 9th. I'll have two juniors making their debut at that comp as well.

Good technical sessions today. I have been making really good progression in my technique with the clean (which is the worst part of oly lifts). Still a few things to iron out but happy with the progression of my technique. Body still on the mend, nutrition really good, sleep not so good. More work to be done #NeverEnds

Thurs 24 Jan

AM - MIT Strength

GPP - medley (4 rounds)

A1 - Sled Drag - 60kg x 10m+10m

A2 - Farmers Walk - 20s x 10m+10m

A3 - Tyre Flip - 80kg x 10m+10m

Snatch off low blocks - 100x2, 120x1, 130x1, 140x1 - 140 felt good today - though not as snappy. Speed and snappiness will come back during a deload.

Stretch

Good fun with the GPP today - had 5 of us going - though we need to get a heavier tyre and heavier farmers :) Still ironing out a few bugs with snatch technique. Body still a bit banged up but speed and power is still good. I'm going to trial a modified 3-week deload/pulling prog mix. I have a few theories on how the 3-week deload mix will work - only one way to see if it works. Next comp on 9th Feb :)

AM - 10.30am - Strongman

Farmers Walk - 100kg EH - 10m x 4, 20m x 1 - working on technique

Stone Lift - 114kg - 5 attempts - working on technique - got some awesome tips from Hayden Kumerich (current NZ 105kg Strongest Man)

Stone Carry (114kg) + Sled Drag (170kg) - 10m+10m x 2

Stone Clean & Press - 114kg - 10 attempts - all cleaned but missed all presses - heaps of fun

PM - 3.30pm - MIT Strength

Snatch - 100x1x2, 120x1, 130x1, 135x1, 140x1, 145xmx2 - so close :)

C&J - 120x1, 140x1, 160x1 - forearms fatigued from Strongman, but legs feeling good. Left it there :)

A great day of training today :) The Strongman in the morning was heaps of fun - if you haven't tried any Strongman training - you should give it a go. My technique in the Farmers Walk and Stone Lift is feeling a lot better after today's sessions.

The Oly lifting in the PM was good too = though I was fatigue from Strongman, my technique was holding solid. 140/180 could be my opening attempts at my next comp in 2-weeks (9th Feb) - but we will see how my deload goes :)

PC&J - 100x1, 120x1x4, 130x1, 140x1, 150x1, 160xmx2 - so close - tech off a bit. 150 was easy though.

Paused Back Squat - 250kg (PB)

Tyre Flip/Holds - MIT tyre = 300kg+ - 20 pick ups and holds - bloody tiring lol

Deadlift - 220x1, 250x1, 270x1, 280xm, 270x1

Power C&J (eleiko bar) - 70x2, 100x1x2, 120x1, 130x1, 140x1, 150x1, 155x1, 160x1 (SB)

Stretch

It was a funny training day on Sat - the testing lab was spooky and quiet lifting in there lol. The bar was thick on deadlift and PC&J, where I had grip trouble :(

I was stoked to get 160 PC&J - it's a 'Seasons Best' and heaviest I've Power Cleaned since Sep last year. Technique felt really good too.

300 squat was easy - would've gone heavier, but the plates were too thick and we couldn't fit anymore plates on. Plus the bar was a bit whippy :( Happy with my squat.

Deadlift was ok - it's the heaviest I've deadlifted since the Oceania's last year - with 180kg clean pulls being the heaviest I've done since then. More work to do on this lift.

OWA Weightlifting Monthly

BW - 146.4kg (thought I was going to be 150kg srs)

Snatch - 142, 147, 152x (PB attempt)

C&J - 175x, 182x, 182x

Total - DNT :(

Back Squat - 200x3, 220x2, 250x1, 280x1, 220x5

It was an ok day in the office :) The weight of every lift felt easy/light - but I just couldn't put things together when it counted. I cut the pull short on 152 snatch. 175 was the heaviest I've opened up with but it felt light, the clean was easy but the bar bounced out. 182 second attempt was a bummer - after the clean and after my 2nd re-adjust of the bar I started to black out a bit, so I took a bit longer to get some more air - nothing left for the jerk after that lol. And 182 third attempt just bounced me around at the bottom - which put me in a weak position to stand up :( No good - this is the first time I've bombed out since Dec 2007.

Positives are my technique is feeling really solid at the moment and confidence is high too. A few adjustments here and there will yield some great benefits.

Still a few more things to work on - but heading in the right direction. I need to look at opening on 150/180 in the next 6-8 months.

AM - Otara Barbell Club

Snatch - 100x1, 110x1, 120x1, 130x1, 137x1, 142x1, 147x1, 152xmx2

20-mins break

C&J - 100x1x2, 120x1, 140x1, 160x1, 170xmc, 170x1, 180xmj, 180x1

Stretch

Pretty good day in the office. All lifts felt light off the floor - no fear with 152 and 180 - just trying to place the weight in the right places. The 147 snatch was the lift of the day for me. The first 180 clean was good too. 160/200 is feeling realistic and doable - more work to be done though #NeverEnds.

Counties Strongman - 16th/17th Feb

It was a good day in the office for Danomyte - I set some good PB's, won an event (1st for me) and didn't get injured (the most important for me). Though I still have a lot to work on - stones was the worse for me and need to train harder to get better at these.

Day 1

Weight for Height - 3rd Place - 16ft (=PB)

Tyre Flip (8 flips for time) - 4th Place - 31.56-secs (PB)

Inch DB - 4th Place - 68kg (PB)

Stones - 6th Place - 3 stones in 20.08-secs

Day 2

Farmers Walk (100kg EH) - 22.64-secs (PB)

Log Lift - 1st Place - 140kg (PB)

Carry (114kg) and Drag (165kg) - 3rd Place - 39.70-secs (PB)

Partial Deadlift - 2nd Place - 370kg

3rd Place Overall

Here's the vid with commentary - hope you enjoy :)

New Campaign - 3-comps in 3-weeks

Week 1 - OWA Monthly - Weightlifting - 16th March

Goal - PB in Snatch and C&J - 151/181

Week 2 - Powerlifting Comp - 23rd March

Goal - PB in all lifts - 332.5/187.5/302.5

Week 3 - NZ Strongest Man - 29th/30th March

Goal - PB in all events - especially the tyre, log and the stones.

I prefer this order of events as well (OL, PL, SM) and have been lucky with the competition scheduling (all by coincidence). I'll recover easily from the oly comp but will need to be careful/diligent with my recovery between the PL comp and NZSM (only 5 day turn around).

Training will be pretty basic - olympic lifting and squat every session, bench 2 x week and deadlift 1 x week. Still going heavy/max every week on the Fri or Sat. Will go heavy in Deadlift every 2 weeks. Will increase implement training to 2 x week, maybe 3 x week if I can fit it in.
