Attitude & Acheivement......

I've wanted to comment on this topic for a while, and I guess it’s just my little rant and chance to give bricks & bouquets to those on the forum as I see it.

Here’s the Bricks part….

A trend I've noticed for a while now is those on here that constantly make personal attacks, or criticise others with no constructive angle, seem to be, more often than not, guys that have never achieved anything within the sports we on the forum are associated with (mainly BBing, PLing, SM & MMA).

It is almost to the point now that when I see a newish member jumping on the bandwagon and name calling / criticising valid posts, I write that member off as another bigmouth who isn't going to leave a mark on any of the sports mentioned.

I've seen a similar trend to this over the years in the gym scene, (mainly with young guys getting on the gear), and thinking & acting like they're the next big thing. In 20+ years I can't remember any of those guys actually achieving anything, with the vast majority dropping out of the scene with a few years.

In summary I think that the tall poppy syndrome displayed on the forum, or knocking others from their perceived perches, is a trait that either shows a character flaw or that someone is currently in a headspace that won’t see them achieve their goals? Maybe those in this category would be better served focusing on bettering themselves rather than belittling others?

Onto the bouquets!

The positive trend I've noticed here is that often guys that have done well in the sports, (e.g. Bobsta, HarryB, Best Bench, Loochi, Old Bull, Android, Tonka, Soundsgood - just a few examples without nuthugging too much! ), tend to support new & old members alike and encourage them to reach their potential.

I personally think it's great to see this informal kind of mentoring going on, and I guess it's the guy’s way of giving something back to their sport? A few of these guys have told me how they got involved in the sport and had early mentors that helped them succeed - very much like my introduction to PLing.

I don’t think people are confined to one camp or another, and we all resort to sarcastic comments from time to time (often through frustration), but I think it’s worth doing a little reality check from time to time and objectively asking yourself where you sit and if that position best serves you in achieving your personal goals?

Anyway rant over, but something to think about?

Thoughts / comments welcome!

Inb4 Phaggot! LOL

Valid point phaggot! lol

From my perspective I like to think that I am "mostly" positive and helpful, I do truly enjoy thinking that I might have contributed in some positive manner to someone's achievement. However I do on occasion find myself commenting in a negative or smart arse way and I will often read something and sit back before I decide whether or not it was my best idea lol...

I guess I think that whilst it's only the net.. (yeah whatever), it's a small world in strength sports and well we all kind of know who's who and if not it's pretty easy to find out. So why piss on the guy today who might be in a position to help you tomorrow in the real world.

I have been involved in bodybuilding and weight training all of my life and now at 39 I am constantly finding guys I "helped" (read punished as TPs in the gym) coming to me thanking me for taking time with them. I love that, who doesn't like positive feedback?

I find the guys who have done a lot, as Nate mentioned are really mentoring types and only do good for the way weight trainers are perceived by the people. The ones who amuse themselves totally by pissing on people or downgrading achievements of people really should possibly look at themselves...

My 10c probably 12c NZ with the exchange rate!

Good post bro, as someone new to powerlifting (and I guess new in the scheme of things to strength training in general) advice from the "old heads" - both from PL and BB backgrounds - has been awesome, and contributed hugely to the gains I've made this year.

Only hope I can get old ( :poked: ) and wise enough in future to pass some of the same nous down

As to the bricks - comes down to humility really, doesn't it? Pman recently wrote a good article on it - "What is Genius?". It really got me thinking about who shows open-mindedness? Willingness to be wrong? The people that do are generally the ones with the most "knowledge" and the ones that people are most likely to look up to for advices  Good quote:

Knowledge is a process, a kind of striving, rather than a state of attainment. You don’t know nearly what you think, and being certain is concrete proof that you are no longer learning.

Tbh it's prob more due to the fact that the names mentioned are in the public eye and don't want people to think they themselves are assholes LOL.

Not that I would name names but I don't think I'm the only one that occasionally receives pms from members either laughing or raging at other people....they just keep it private. In my opinion until someone has achieved something (not neccasaraly competively) I don't take much notice.

Sometimes it's nice for people to here the truth/get a reality check (WBJ steroid guru 'it's not about food' ect) rather than constantly just being 'supportive'

But seriously nate if your theory is that a more succesful person = a more helpful/less arrogant my encounters def point to the contrary...lol

But all things aside how boring would this place be without a bit of banter anyway? :D

lol I wouldn't agree with you there because I think if one of those boys didn't like you they wouldn't be shy of telling you lol

I think most people chime in when someone and I am not saying WBJ says something we think is a bit ridiculous but once the comments are made we leave it and see if they learn to amend how they come across. MOstly no but hey got to give a bloke a chance.

I would agree with this in some ways because I have to say some of my early experiences as a young guy were less than stellar, however remembering how those interactions made me feel about that person made me acutely aware of how I should behave towards others. You know breaking the cycle and all that. I find most of the guys on this site (even some of the guys who slam everyone) do contribute in positive ways by adding their experiences and knowledge.

hundred percent, we do have to be able to have a laugh and this site gives me loads of laughs every day!!

well I am a no one... but its costs nothing to be humble.... and I would like to think I could help someone if need be.

Most off the people I have meet over the years which has left a impression on me and I will go as far to say- (man I wish I was like that) have being very humble, great record holders and great achivers, and nice people.

We all have bad points but its how we manage them to what others think off us

I'm with Harry, I'm not saying everyone should nuthug idiots but acting like an asshole to someone trying their best is a show of character.

Agree with you both. E.g WBJ needs to be told from time to time when he's being a twat, but when he does a good post there is nothing to be gained from shredding it apart. Some can't distinguish the difference & take their personal bias out of the threads

I'll disagree and say that my experience with those acheivers in our sports has generally been very positive. Guys like Phil Emmett, Derek Pomana in Powerlifting mentored me and acted as role models for my early days in the gym. Guys like Graham Scia Scia, Matt Rossiter, Dave Smith, Reuben Simanu, Craig McGuigan, Nick Hansen, Warren Trent etc etc helped me out immensely in my later years in PLing, BBing & Strongman. These guys all acheived things in their own rights but were more than happy to help me out for no benefit of their own

But all things aside how boring would this place be without a bit of banter anyway? :D

Agreed 110% - I enjoy the laughs I get on NZBB as much as anyone. Tom, TWL, NZMM & dare I say Jimjim have all had me in hysterics. Time & place for sure - all about context!

what actually happened to jimjim?

JimJim got banned and thanks very much to mods for banning JimJim.

He occasionally went over the top, but was mostly humorous when he did...

He always said how it was... He never lied about his under achievements..!!!
