My first competition

Okay, so all I have is videos, but it is what it is. I'll do a little life story about my diet and experiences throughout the journey leading up to the competition.

My competition was on the 1st of October 2011 and I started dieting 16 weeks prior. Within the first two weeks of my diet, I had a boil develop below my right eye. So due to this, I wasn't able to train for a majority of the week, while still maintaining my diet; it was an extreme mental builder for me - being able to do shit all while still sticking to the diet. The only thing I could do was eat and it was all I looked forward to.

The diet began to make me knuckle down in school. I figured, if I can have this much discipline for bodybuilding, why can't I do it in school? So I started listening to my teachers more, and my grades have rocketed. It gave me a real sense of accomplishment, and I actually look forward to school now and getting work done (although some days I'm still a bit meh). My self-esteem went up a lot more as the muscle definition came through because I knew that I wasn't just some fat shit; I really did have muscle underneath.

A few weeks later, my close friend who I've known since I was 5, passed away in a car accident. I don't need to go into details but needless to say, this screwed up my diet for a few days and I put on a bit of weight, but kept training and I stopped paying attention in school for a bit. But she was the same age as me and was in university, so I knew that I had to listen in school again, and get back to training in her memory. I felt revamped and like I had more purpose to train and try and get as shredded as I wanted to be because I realized that the only person who could prevent me from winning was myself.

The last week of my diet, I was away on a PE trip. I left for the trip on Monday morning and arrived home at 11pm on Friday night. I had to get home, use veet hair removal cream to get rid of my hair, shower and then get on two coats of stain. I didn't get to sleep 'til about 1.30am and then I had to wake up at 5.30am, put on more tan and head straight into Wellington to register and compete. However, there was a little bit of panic on my part. On Thursday night, a boil began to develop on the outside of my left quad; I couldn't stop thinking about how it could potentially screw me over, but Peter assured me that it would be okay and the tan would cover it up. Sure enough, it did, and there was nothing left to panic about.

I started off at about 71kgs and have no idea what I weighed on the day because I didn't need to weigh-in since it was an age category, but I assume I lost about 12 - 15kgs throughout the whole diet. Below are three videos - Morning show, evening show and the pose down (which includes placings). I encountered another issue on the day as well, my music wouldn't play. So Darryn Onekawa pretty much called upon me to just pose. I had an absolute blast and met some amazing people, and I can't wait to compete again, with a lot more mass, and a hell of a lot better conditioning.

THIS IS A ZUMBA BODY loljk

nz ifbb pro judges...wank wank... how rudes that, introducing the judges and other people around the theatre and clapping for the judges while these guys are out on stage... these people can never just let someone whose day it is on their first comp and who ahve worked really hard to be up there be the centre of attention, they are so obsessed with themselves being the centre of attention at every show... absolute tossers.

anyway bro u looked really good and it takes a lot of courage to get up on stage when your young and its your first comp, i still remember how nervous i was before i walked out and then how buzzed i was when i walked off. u looked like you put the effort in bro and thats what its all about giving your all.

whats your plan now mate?

Well I was thinking about taking two years off an competing in teens for a final year (because being nineTEEN would make sense) but apparently this is the last year I can do teens. So I guess just still take two years off, improve my overall physique, and compete in junior mens.

Bro, awesome stuff for your first comp, legs looked massive in paritcular, and good effort posing without a track!

Liked.

Thanks drizzt. I'm hoping my upper body will catch up to my legs. But it isn't going to be easy since I'll be training all muscles as hard as the others.

good shit-you definetely deserved the win

Thanks. The kid in the middle was 15! Doesn't really look amazing but had a wide back for his age.

Yeah, I guess he could have done it before we walked out, but whatever I guess. I was only tensing at about 80% because I was anticipating holding that front relaxed for a while (but not a minute!)

We started the show and hour late as well apparently. But that's okay, gave me time to relax into the situation and even out my tan as well.

Great stuff dude, you clearly owned that stage, awesome stage presence. Your physique definitely showed the effort you'd put into it, and it was a well-deserved win. Onwards and upwards from here.

Thanks, bro. Definitely appreciate it.

All my animal impersonations have just given me a natural feel for the stage hahaha

Just stole this picture from TFB

@ Tom and Train Hard -

Sometimes there's a delay in getting a class on stage, and they introduce the judges to fill in time. It may be that Moe had just started to do that when the guys walked out. In an ideal world he'd have stopped and introduced the judges later, but I can understand how when you're in the spotlight with a microphone, it's hard to think clearly enough to be able to change tack. I don't know - I wasn't there. But I wouldn't get too worked up about it without knowing all the details.

What I would get worked up about is the inability of competitions to play the right music (or ANY music, in SUAS' case!). Yes, it requires a bit of organisation. Yes, the sound people are probably volunteers. But this problem crops up in nearly every show. You'd think the competition organisers would have worked out a foolproof system by now. It must be absolutely gut-wrenching to have worked hard on a routine, and have it stuffed up by someone else's incompetence.

Anyway, great posing, and as everyone's said: fantastic legs, SUAS. Well done!

Nice work bro, you looked great, awesome stage confidence. I can see where if you hadn't been away the week before and had a nice smooth run in you could have looked a wee bit better. Next year as a teen again for sure, put some size on and hit the nationals!!!!

Thanks Harry. If I'm eligible for teens I may compete. But if it's the same thing next year age-wise as it was for this year, I don't think I'll compete. But that's okay, more time to grow.

WOW

You've actually made a good post.

Like Harry said, if only you hadn't been away that last week so everything was more controlled you would've looked much better

Hahahaha. Thanks sweetness. At least I'll have you to keep me in-line throughout the diet next time, hopefully.

Thanks Nate. The course of the whole thing has definitely changed me. For example, yesterday, I had a job interview and start Friday and today I found out that I passed NCEA level 3. My report said I have 64 credits (you need 80 to pass) but I had 4 or 5 assessments that I had passed that were left out of the report.

Good work Kyle.

Bodybuilding doesn't pay the bills but the discipline you learn (or some of us here learn! ) helps a lot in life & with careers.

Nate
