Chest, Shoulders & Triceps

Bench Press > 100x15, 140x10, 160x8, 160x8

Pec Dec/Chest Press Machine > 4 sets of 12-15/12-15 (Ramping up weight each set, going quite close to failure)

Low Incline DB Flys > Warm up set of 20

Middle set of 15

Top set of 12

Triple Dropset going to failure each time

Seated Side Raises > 2 sets of 20

2 sets of 15

2 sets of 12

Standing Side Raise > One Arm at a time, hold 'resting' arm at the top, 10 reps each then 9 then 8 etc down to 1.

Holds at top till failure with light weight (waiting for missus to finish her sets lol)

Shoulder Press Machine > 5 sets - 20 reps, 20 reps, 15 reps, 12 reps, 10 reps then dropset

Bent Over Rear Flys/DB Front Raise > 5 sets of 25/15

Rope Pressdowns > Warm Up set of 40 reps

2 Work sets of 25 and 15 reps

2 Triple Dropsets from top weight going to failure each time

DB French Press/DB Kickbacks > 5 sets of 25/20

Pretty good session considering circumstances. I think 160 for 8 is actually my PB at 160 lol. So two comfortable sets I'm happy. Have lost 3kg or so so far since comp and am getting in solid cardio gains and less food so to still be strongish is nice. Everything else was pretty much just by feel, just making things hard and getting a solid pump.

Trained with the missus cos she felt like she needed to do something lol. Actually kept up really well and surprisingly for not training much she's still got most of her strength there.

Walked around for about 4 hours that morning (strong cardio and tan gains lol) just looking around the place. So much to see. Plus spent like 45 minutes swimming around in the pool so cardio will be top notch soon lol.

Did random Leg workout on 2/04, late posting as we've been having fun and heaps of stuff to do. Can't remember what we did exactly but nothing was heavy as no Squat Rack and even maxing their pin loaded Leg Press I was doing sets of 40 and supersetting with Sissy Squats with a 5 sec isometric contraction. Smith Romanian, Walking DB Lunges, Leg Extension, Leg Curls and some Core, I think that's it.

Life gains have been on a new level. Rode some Elephants bareback, patted and chilled with tigers, played with Monkeys and got beaten at basketball by one.. It sick.

Thai massage made me feel like FlexibilityBrah and felt real bad for the poor girl as she was less then half my size and I paid like $8 or some shit for an hour lol.

Flew to Phuket on the 4/04 and our hotel here doesn't have a gym so yolo just guna be looking like a white (ever so slightly tanned) whale on the beach and give zero fucks. Doing heaps of walking, and went on a speedboat cruise today and did heaps of swimming. Could be the start of an ironman career in the making lol.

Chest, Delts and Tris

Smith Flat Bench > 1ppsx20, 2ppsx15, 3ppsx12, 3ppsx12, 3ppsx12/2ppsx12/1ppsx13 (Slow controlled reps, solid pump, had no more weight to add lol)

Pec Dec Machine > 4 sets of 20 ramping weight up each set

Incline DB Flys/Incline DB Press > Warm up set of 20 reps on Flys

Middle set of 15/Fail

2 top sets of 12/Fail (Didn't count on Press, just max reps then carry on with max partials till DBs hardly moving)

Alternating Front Raise/Standing DB Press (Same weight used for Press) > Warm Up set of 30/20

3 top sets of 24/Fail (Obviously less reps on the press each set, didn't count just went till I couldn't cos of burn)

Standing Side Raise > Run the rack from light DBs, ended up 3 sets up doing 15 reps each set straight after another till I couldn't hit 15 then went back down through previous DBs till get to lightest again.

Standing Side Raise/Y Raise > 3 sets of 15/10

Dips > 3 sets to failure and till I had to sit at the bottom cos Tris didn't wanna play ball (Unsure on Reps, think about 35-40 odd before had to finish with partials, went down each set from there obvs)

Tate Press > Ramping sets of 20, 15, 12, then triple dropset from top weight on final set

One Arm DB Overhead Extensions > 1 set with relatively light DB doing reps Left Arm till couldn't, then Right, then Left, then Right. Done.

So found the gym at our new resort in Koh Samui. Limited equipment but good enough for a decent session.

Trained with the missus again, she pretty keen to get back into lifting after a bit of a hiatus so that's a good time.

Definitely having to make reps harder than they would usually be by focusing on tension and controlling the movements, feels good though, pumps are good even with less food than usual and so much more cardio going on.

Cardio gains going hard though, going swimming in sea for couple hours at a time etc or going walking around for same kinda time, in fucking late 30's heat lol. Seeing some cool stuff though, and interesting to see how other people live. Feel kinda bad for the people here as they do stuff and get f*ck all in return, but they seem pretty group minded and work together usually and seem to look out for each other. Get sick of every third c*nt asking me if I want a suit since I wouldn't be able to buy off the shelf etc lol. Getting way too much male attention about my size for my liking haha.

Find good food spots around the place, find a few places with good food and can feed me and missus with a drink each for like $10. Winning.

Went on that speedboat cruise, mean swimming and snorkelling in some dope spots. Heaps of fish, some massive crabs etc.

Also out in the nightlife in Phuket, there's a walking street which is like the main party place. All the bars don't have a front wall and can see in, I've never seen so many poles and so many dancers/strippers in my entire life lol. Missus wasn't impressed when I said let's get a feed here haha, but then found a mint sushi place just round the corner which was epic, got over excited with the menu and ordered way too much but finished like 5 dishes cos can't waste that monies lolol

Left Phuket behind yesterday and arrived in Koh Samui just after lunchtime. Nice as island just off the coast of Thailand. Very relaxed and not quite as hot and humid so I'm enjoying it so far.

Legs and Core

Squats > Warm up with high reps at Bar and 60kg few sets

100x12, 140x12, 180x12, 180x12, 220x6, 140x15, 140x15

Leg Press > 2ppsx50, 3ppsx50, 3 sets of 20 (3/1/1/1 Tempo) - 4pps

Leg Curls > Warm Up Set of 20

Working Sets of 15, 12, 12

Final Set was triple dropset to failure plus max partials each drop

Leg Extensions > Warm Up Set of 30

Working Sets of 25, 20, 20

Final Set was a triple dropset to failure on first set then failure plus few self spotted reps on each other drop

Heels to Heaven/Reverse Crunches > 4 sets of 25/15

Cable Ab Pulldowns > 3 sets of 30

Squats were mint, real happy with how they went. Most reps I've done on them in a long time and surprised my conditioning held out lol. Was sweating like a pedo at a wiggles concert after even the set with 100kg. Joints etc feel awesome in the heat but trade off is soaking your clothes.

Was only planning to go to four plates today but decided to see how I'd go a bit heavier and it worked out well, felt comfortable, probably would have been good for 8 or so if I'd pushed it but the heat was getting to me, felt sick lol.

The Leg Press was a real high angle and had quite a heavy carriage I'd say cos it was dam hard or maybe I was just stuffed from Squats but was mean either way, managed to keep a good pump even with how much I was sweating.

On our travels around the place we managed to find a decent gym, was upstairs in a building down the road. Run by this real funny Ozzy guy and pretty well equipped, was like f*ck yea coming back here to do Legs. Given our hotel gym didn't even have any free weight section cept a few DBs.

We drove around the whole island on a scooter yesterday during the day, took a few hours but was pretty dope. Missus ended up feeling like shit from Heat Exhaustion so she stayed home with water, electrolytes, air con etc.

Was a mean session anyway and probably guna huck down there again today or tomorrow and do Back, Rear Delts and Bis.

Probably hiring a jetski today too since we have a bungalow right by the beach and have been down there watching them last few days and looks fun as f*ck.

Inb4 I never post again cos death in jetski accident. Yolo.

Nice squatting bro. Be aware of JetSki scam over there bro. It's one of most common ways they will try do you for cash, cops in on it and all. Just check it for damage before you take it out and only take a good condition one. The little cunts will do you for damage that was there before you even arrived in the country. You can't win over there man, the Thais are like packs of hyenas. Stay safe bro.

Looks like your enjoying yourself. Will be nice after a big build up to the comp. Do you do your own training?  Seems to be quite instinctive. Thinking of taking a Lot more of a powerbuilder approach myself

Yea bro definitely nice to chill out a bit after a relatively successful comp.

I do my own training outside of comp preps. For the last year while I was basically constantly training for this comp or that comp I was getting Tom Lilley to coach me online. He did the full package, technique, programming, Q&A etc. I added a fair bit of accessory work to his programme because that's just how I train and how I know I progress best. And I prefer training like a bodybuilder most of the time, quicker more pump etc, I just like lifting heavy things too.

Outside of prepping where I have to hit certain numbers each week, you're right my training in pretty instinctive, I'll do what feels good and I like variety and I also change stuff on the fly if something isn't feeling right. I pretty much always follow a split, my go to was a very bodybuilding style split doing each muscle group once a week on a certain day. Worked well obviously.

I'm trying something different atm where I basically break it up into Push/Legs/Pull/Rest repeat which I am actually quite liking and I think will work even better once I get into a routine and better diet. I'll likely alternate which workout I hit after the rest day and make that the day to go heavy on whatever of the big three fits that day (Bench with Push, Squats with Legs and Deads with Back) and then do much more bodybuilding style stuff on the other days. This way I'll theoretically be having plenty of rest between heavy days and like 10 days or so between each Squat, Bench or Dead session where I'll try progress weight wise. Hard to explain but makes sense in my head. All a work in progress and experimenting with what will work better for me.

Definitely recommend a 'power building' style approach man. Muscle moves weight no way around that. And also if you're trying to stay in a weight class better to be leaner with more muscle than fat doing nothing. Being fat at say 90kg doesn't do much for your leverages compared to if you were a fat 140kg lol. Makes training more enjoyable too I find getting a good pump, get bored sitting around doing a set of Squats every five minutes.

Thanks bro, have left my wraps at home so guna be purely sleeves for couple years, build some muscle and hopefully get a stronger base squat so that when I go back to wraps for comps I'll be better off.

All over that like a white on rice bro. Had seen it on a few TV shows etc so checked the one we were given before we took it out and was all geezy. Got up to 80km/h odd on it with my fat ass and the missus on it so that was pretty cool, had never been on a jet ski before today lol. But yea definitely happens to some poor cunts !

That is a perfect way to describe them, and you never can tell who is working with who or who is getting money from what etc.

Back, Rear Delts and Bis

(Lil bit of Traps and Forearms thrown in for shits and gigs)

Medium Neutral Grip Pull Ups > 3 sets of 12 - BW

Plate Loaded Wide Grip Pulldown > 1ppsx20, 3 sets of 12 - 2pps (Deadstop Reps plus 1-2 sec hold at full contraction)

Sweeping DB Rows > 35x20, 40x20, 45x15

Seated Row > Warm Up set of 20 reps

Working sets of 15, 15, 12, 10

(2/1/1/2 Tempo)

Straight Arm Pulldowns > Ramp Up sets of 30, 20

2 dropsets of 15/Fail/Fail

Face Pulls > 4 sets of 30

Plate Loaded Shrug/Row > 1ppsx25, 3 sets of 20 - 2pps

Alternating DB Curls > 2 sets of 40 - 15kg

Plate Loaded Machine Preacher Curls > 15x25, 25x20, 35x15, 45x12, 45x12/25xFail+Partials

(2/1/1/2 Tempo)

Barbell Reverse Curls/Behind the Back Forearm-Finger Curls > 15x25/25, 20x25/20, 20x20/20

Done and Dusted, fucking mean session. Pump was legit and the gym had some filthy downlighting which made me look better than I do especially once I started getting pumped but zero fucks given and just made me go harder lol. Lots of tempo stuff to make the exercises harder than they were since couldn't add more to cable stack or just cos it felt right on that movement.

The sweeping rows are something I played around with for a bit awhile back and I really rate it. It's where instead of pulling straight up with the DB you make more of a sweeping motion and kinda squeeze back into it at the top, really nails your whole Lat rather than Traps trying to take over.

The Shrug Machine was something I've seen on lots of vids on YouTube but never used. Was mint. Guy who ran the gym showed me how he uses it so I kinda adapted it and angled a bit differently, since I wanted to hit Rear Delts, pulled slightly higher than him by bending elbows up and turning it into a Shrug/Half Row type thing, great pump in Traps and Rear Delts. Definitely keep it in mind if I come across the machine again.

Fucked shit up on the jetski by the way, had never been on one before and ended up going about 80km/h, I'm not sure if that's fast or slow but felt like we were hauling ass to me lol, my Forearms got a solid pump so were already half fried by the time I got to gym and don't have straps anymore

In Dubai atm, hotel gym is bs so no training being done here. Feeling shit for not doing anything cos I just love training so feel like a sack when I don't do any. Oh well only a short term thing so not too bad.

Making plenty of cardio gains, missus has a fitbit and it said we did like 21000 steps in a day at Dubai Mall for example, might turn into a cardio bunny after all this. Did some hill sprints on sand today as we went out into the desert and did sandboarding on snowboards, it was dope but having to get up the hill everytime sucked lol. So some sort of gains going on, probably making me a lot more functional for daily life as I'm handling all the walking etc fine.

Life gains are at an all time high, few things we've done since we been here have been mind blowing.

Went to Dubai Mall which is in the middle of the city, they have an aquarium with a tunnel like Kelly Tarltons, a water zoo with crocs, otters, fish etc, a ski field (actually at Emirates Mall but fits the list), a waterfall, whole dinosaur fossil display and heaps of other stuff I can't remember in the dam mall, it sick.

Went up Burj Khalifa which is the world's tallest man made structure at 828m tall. We went up to the highest bit the public can go which is 452m high, 124th floor, I'm a bitch when it comes to heights, legs were a bit jelly to start but was a cool experience anyway.

Went dune bashing in the desert today, so surprised we didn't roll half the time but was awesome. Sand drifting down dunes lol. Rode a camel too, ugly cunts but part of Team Underbite (which I have lol) so we got along fine. Ours was called Shampoo.. Fucking Arabs lolol.

The whole city is phenomenal, I could easily live here I reckon if I had a good job, has a real good feel and everyone is nice and such a broad range of people, only like 1 in 10 people who live here is actually a UAE born and bred local, all the rest foreigners who have come and got work here.

Everyone knows the stories about the cars in Dubai, well they're slightly exaggerated but not too far from the truth, seen a ridiculous amount of nice cars, went from never seeing a Rolls Royce cept maybe one or two in person to seeing 10 or so in one afternoon for example lol. Lambos, Ferraris, Mustangs, Maseratis, Mercs are all just common place it seems, my mind is blown.

Tldr cliffs: No training cept passive cardio. Feeling like a phaggot but enjoying travelling.

Dubai is sick, Cars, Camels and Sun, no complaints here.

Think so. Guy i worked with said he worked in Qatar and was on good (not amazing though compared to mining/construction in aus) money which was tax free and everything paid for like accom, right down to having a cook for their meals. Thats just construction though dunno about other industries. I wouldn't live there.

Construction is massive over here, they're building new stuff 24/7 so that pays well for management positions.

All the local people work for the government, which is basically the oil sheiks, and get paid well.

Indians, Chinese, Philippino etc do all the shit jobs like cleaners etc and don't get paid f*ck all.

I've heard of PTs, Sport Coaches etc that I've talked to from NZ get paid well over here.

And yea like Hugh said if you get a good job here they pay for everything for you and your money is tax free and you can spend on whatever you like.

Alright update time.

So I've been in London for about 8 weeks now, loving it ! Great city and lots going on, a lot busier than home obviously.

I've managed to pick up a PTing gig at one of London's premier gyms so that's a bonus, all going well, getting busier every week plus online clients starting to pop up so business going as well as I can hope for the time being.

Training wise I did f*ck all in Dubai and our first couple weeks here as I didn't have a gym to go to etc, the time off was quite nice but I was itching to get back into it. Then the last few weeks as soon as I started work at the gym I got back into proper diet and training, diet wise I wanted to get a lot leaner as I kinda let myself go heading into the Arnolds to try fill out the weight class and travelling. Bodybuilding style training plus cardio and Conditioning sessions have left me at about 103-104kg morning weight, with taking about 8 inches or so off my waist, finally have abs coming back through.

As of right now given my previous performances on the platform I have kindly been give dispensation by GPCNZ to lift at the World Champs in Serbia, since shifting countries etc I totally missed the boat on qualifying comps at home and here. Im really appreciative of the opportunity being given to me and cant thank everyone involved enough. So in just under 14 weeks I will be lifting repping NZ and doing it proud hopefully !

I'll be lifting in the U100 kg Junior class as I know I can easily take advantage of the 24 hour weigh in and drop a lot of weight without affecting my strength. I am aiming to take 3 out of the 4 world records in this class, which are 190.5kg Bench, 325kg Dead and 830kg Total, I have beaten all of these numbers at a much heavier bodyweight but I believe I can be stronger than my performance at the Arnolds with a good training cycle from now. Officially started prepping today so really excited for the weeks to come and it's nice to have a big goal to train for again.

I likely won't be posting very regular updates on here, but if you want to follow my progress day to day plus see some clients progress I'm now on IG, @jhstrengthandcondition, so head there and follow along with all the fun and I'll post in here when I can.

Still lurking and reading what's going on and will chime in occasionally of course !

General Life/Training Update

So still been lurking around reading pretty much every day when there's new posts etc, nothing much changes it seems lol.

So 6 weeks out from World's today, so must have been pretty much 8 weeks since my last update. Training is going really well, Squats are basically keeping up with last prep when I was 120kg and I'm still moving them well enough, just started doubles this week and hit 250kg for 5x2 comfortable as hell.

Bench I'm currently hitting doubles around 170-175kg, feeling pretty strong there for being this bodyweight too, my best at this bodyweight was 182.5kg from last year's Nats so will absolutely smoke that come comp time, probably open heavier than that tbh.

Deads are strong as ever, hitting multiple doubles at 290kg this week, done pretty casually and fast right till the end.

So numbers wise I'm on track for equalling, if not beating, my total from Arnolds (weighed in at 121kg) at a much lighter bodyweight, at this stage I'm 107-108kg in the morning. Obviously come comp time I'm still going to be competing in the U100s and I'm confident on my prep for that to happen easily.

Current split is like this:

Monday - Heavy Squats

Tuesday - Heavy Bench

Wednesday - No weights, just Mobility/Conditioning

Thursday - Heavy Deads

Friday - Conditioning AM, Light Squats PM

Saturday - Extras (Generally Delts & Arms, plus Conditioning afterwards)

Sunday - Complete Rest

Working well at this stage, strength is up and I'm actually fitter than ever as well so making it happen !

I changed my split at 8 weeks out to be more specific for comp prep, up until then I was hitting much more volume and focusing on getting stronger on accessories like Front Squats, Incline Bench, Sumo Romanians etc. I'm still keeping a good dose of volume in atm of course like I always do but the intensity is right up on my main movements and has dropped down on my accessories a fair whack.

Diet at this stage is very 'bodybuilderesque' if that makes sense, just good clean food, lots of Veges (more than I ever ate back home), all my calories are coming from really clean sources. And once a week or so I have a meal off where we go out etc and I eat whatever, but nothing like my old 'Cheat Nights' used to be like.

Travel wise I had a goal of visiting 12 different new countries in 12 months, I'm up to 6 so far, with a trip to Germany planned end of this month, then of course World's is Serbia (I'm actually flying into Sofia, Bulgaria as it's closer to the host city, Nis, than if I flew into Belgrade) so killing two birds with one stone there. When I get back we're supposedly going to Croatia (I let the missus sort it all really) and then probably Ireland or somewhere closer in October because we're going on a fortnight long Contiki end of November where we will be hitting like 6-7 countries apparently, so will easily make my goal of 12 countries in 12 months.

I've been pretty regularly posting lifting vids on IG that I started a couple months back as it's an easy platform to use and a really good business tool I've found.

Well let's be honest all you did was put on fat and water for the last prep.. Not like it was a good 121. Probably got the same lbm now as you had then to be fair. So it shouldn't be that surprising to be as strong/stronger. Sounds like it's going well though!

Funny how you would know my body composition in any recent times when I haven't seen you for over a year.

I doubt it was all fat and water but yes was definitely more than I needed to, won't make that mistake again as dieting it all off wasn't amazing fun.

Just did what I thought I needed to at the time to be competitive, at my 2nd international competition (where I got 3rd), instead of going and lifting in a competition against a total of 10 lifters spread across the whole meet.

But thanks anyway for your constructive input.
