How do we get ALL the Champions on stage??!!

Recommended Posts

In any one year the National Open Mens division (in whatever federation) comes down to an obvious battle between two, maybe three, competitors, and six or seven other past champs have taken a year off. We never quite get the full representation of the country's champs in a year. Wouldn't it be great if on one night we had the Onekawas, Debenhams, Allsopp-Smiths, Kingsnorths, Tautalanoas...etc all battling it out for the country's top BB honour!

Can anyone think of a year in NZ where we we were close to that? (on the Olympia stage, some consider 1999 the best line-up ever).

Is it achieveable? I suspect prizemoney would be a factor

The IFBB elite show several years ago is an example of how a format like this can be successful.

You had all the top amateurs from both Feds in one lineup, which made for arguably the greatest amateur lineups seen on a NZ stage in the last decade at least. Jamie Cameron, Nathan Ohearn, Darryn Onekawa, Grant Pieterse just to name a few of the big boys, all came in at their peak and the posedowns were awesome. Interestingly the judges places eventual Overall Mr NZ Daniel Hibbs near last place.

Obviously prize money played a big part in bringing all these guys together but I would say having no political sanctions imposed by competing in such an event would have to come into it too. At the end of the day it was the public who won cos they got to see the best physiques in the country all together.

It was followed by the Elite pro show where some of the best IFBB pros showed up in mint condition. It was the week after the Australian Grand Prix so we got to see Dexter Jackson and Toney Freeman in tiptop condition among others. NZ was represented by Justin Rys and Mike K? Maybe Mike D?

Anyway the format and prizemoney brought together the best bods in the country and I would love to see it again!

One thing about the Elite show a few years ago I thought that was very cool seeing guys like Dexter,Melvin,Toney Freeman,Troy Alves etc on the news including NZ pro's like Moe and Mike Kingsnorth as well and I belive that show was held in March of 2008.

Yea thats what I'm talking about! I used to be a regular attender of National shows up until about 4 years ago. However Id come away dissatisfied that the showcase event, from a mens perspective, had no more than 3 competitors, and the winner you could pick at the weigh-in!

I'd love to see the above happen again. I know it sounds abit fanciful but if we got the ball rolling by raising the possibility through this forum, maybe we could get some momentum going...who knows? Generate enough interest and publicity, the prizemoney would be the least of the worries. Straight-up, Id pay twice todays rate to see that show if I knew we were going to see the best of the best turn up.

No reason it wouldn't work for the ladies too...

(the grinding sound is my scheming mind moving into overdrive )

Yea man, I'm in. Surely a couple of those names mentioned above visit this forum now and then...what would it take guys? It can't all be about prizemoney. If you knew 5 or 6 past winners were going to compete for say a 'NZ Champions Cup' that happens only every 4 years, would that get you going??? Id pay double rates too for that show! Hell, I might even come out of retirement for that myself
