Gym making us fatter

"A spate of studies in the 1990s also countered the myth that "having more muscle means burning more kilojoules", one often spruiked by those awful fitness magazines that started popping up in the bathrooms of 20-something men in the early noughties. Sure, you burn kilojoules while lifting weights, but the idea that muscle mass permanently raises your base metabolic rate (the speed at which your body burns kilojoules when you're doing normal daily activities) is bunkum"

This crock of sh*t was written in an article in stuff today (originally from the Sydney Herald).

Anybody know what study this nutjob was talking about?

She notes that treadmill exercises do not burn that many calories, and that many people feel like they have deserved extra calories because of their exercise so they negate their exercise's effect.

But is this the gym's fault for making them fat? No, it's a food-saturated culture that doesn't understand how to eat appropriately.

Plus, she fails to understand the effect resistance training has on your metabolism post exercise - this has been proven to raise your metabolism for up to 36hours after training. (Someone will know the reference for this - if not, i have it at home).

And lastly, referring to the part you quoted above, you can see simply from the way she tries to define metabolic rate that she doesn't know what she is talking about.

It is nothing to do with the speed at which calories are processed, but rather the requirements of cell function. Muscle cells are more metabolically expensive than other cells so require more energy. However, even fat requires more calories simply because a fat person has more mass than a skinny one. In this sense, when people say they have a 'slow metabolism' (especially fat people) they are talking shit.

Fucking atrociously written and researched article.

I quite enjoyed writing a ranty email attacking it and the writer to the editors of both Stuff.co.nz and the Sydney Morning Herald. That article embodies everything that is wrong with 'journalism' these days.

Uncensored freedom of speech = License to say the dumbest shit you can say in the public media and people will believe it

she is right in a sense that there are so many people that go to the gym to lose weight only to find themselves stuck, they never think about a clean diet and she is right diet is the major part of the equation. If gyms really worked having a six pack would not be such a mission and lot more folk would have a trim waist line.

If trying to lose weight then diet should be the first thing you look at before you even consider going into the gym. In fact diet is most important regardless what you are trying to achieve. This is why we get so many gym haters because they have tryed and failed without realising the root of their problem

Completely agree - shes obviously one of the more uneducated people in the world today who has failed to her job properly and is making excuses for why her body wobbles every time she stops moving.

However, back to what I was after....I would love to see that piece of research that she was talking about. I have never heard of such a study (or more specifically the results of such a study) - has anybody any clue what she was on about?

Well that's the thing mate, the studies not referenced so we can't check it. Plus it's 20 years old..

I got the rage when I saw this article and tried looking for her contact details to rant. Thanks for the twitter details Vracula!

She clearly can't hack any sort of exercise and perhaps lazy attitudes like hers are the reason obesity is growing, NOT the gym. Pathetic.

wow how does crap like that get published??

I also happen to truly believe they are useless and stupid; overpriced temples to vanity. Their confusing machines, their hordes of dead-eyed trainers.......
Anyone who runs on a treadmill instead of outdoors needs their head examined,
