Horleys ICE Whey Isolate is the highest quality available in NZ - When I had the supplement store they were able to provide the test results they are required to adhere to as a result of being an NZ brand.

If you divide the total protein grams by the weight of the serving size, this will give you an idea of the quality of the protein supplied > and also ensure you are getting exactly what you pay for.

e.g

ON 100% Whey -

Serving Size: 1 Scoop (29.4g to 30.4g)

Servings Per Container:

Chocolate - 2lb: 31serves 5lb: 77serves

Vanilla - 2lb: 31serves 5lb: 80serves

Strawberry - 2lb: 31serves 5lb: 80serves

Cookies - 2lb: 31serves 5lb: 77serves

Chocolate Mint - 2lb: 31serves 5lb: 77serves

Rocky Road - 2lb: 30serves 5lb: 74serves

Provides per serve:

Total Calories.............................................120

- Calories From Fat.......................................10

Protein.......................................................24 g

Total Carbohydrates.....................................3 g

- Sugars.......................................................1 g

Total Fat.......................................................1 g

- Saturated Fat..........................................0.5 g

- Cholesterol...........................................30 mg

Sodium....................................................60 mg

Potassium..............................................220 mg

Calcium.................................................140 mg

80% whey / 10% carb / 3% fate ... so what is in the 2g left over? IMO 100% should be 100%.

...........

ICE whey below

Protein %: 91.2

Carbs %: 1.7

Fat %: 0.9

Carbs per Serving: 0.6

Sugar per Serving: 0.2

Fat per Serving: 0.3

Sat Fat per Serving: 0.2

Serving Size: 36.1

............

BSC WPI comes in at 89.5 % Protein. It's another high spec powder but its at a good price IMO. the next best thing but to be honest it's as good as the Horleys product with such a close ratio.

.........

Dymatize Elite Whey - only 77% protein off 31g serve ....

Doubt if you'll find the stats. The mainstream concentrate and blend powders are better for meal replacement/supplement - WPI is best suited for post training as it will process quicker than a blend due to it having been greater refined.

Most resistance/strenght friendly sports nutritionists agree that you should take the highest quality and most easily digested protein post training.

Due to cost most people use only wpc vs wpi but if you can afford both, I would use them as you intend to. Horleys Ripped is also a good post training option if you intend to cardio straight after weights - taken between. Weight first / cardio second .... caf kicks in after 10-15 minutes / not easy to sleep on though.

I personally am not that fussed as long as I get the protein in. Currently using Whey Maxx but will probably switch to BSc or Horleys again shortly.

There may be a higher protein content to Horleys Ice @ 91% / 100g

But for a 3kg tub its $210...............

Thats 7c per gram

Dymatize Elite Whey may be less at 77% / 100g but works out cheaper @ 5c per gram..........

Agree when it comes to cost mate - but mike was after opinions on the best - so I was going in on overall quality.

But arn't you concern that the macros o the package dont add up - I have always wondered how dymatize product can be soo sweet - but only claims to have 2g carbs total .... if fat is only 1.5g then what is in the other 8% of the serve?

Most local importers do not have to get their product tested other than having the ingredients confirmed and signed of by MAF. Very few actually get the quality tested.

Yes I agree with regards total protein % and maybe overall quality...

But over the course of a year shouldnt cost be a big part of the equation..

£23 / kg cheaper is a considerable difference.....

Its in and out of your system in hours, as long as your getting enough protein, does it really matter that much?

Its just numbers at the end of the day...

yeah but then you could say eat really shit beef mince over a nice a steak for example

the mince will contain a load of animal fat and have other contents listed as 'meat'. ie sinew, fat, gristle, ligaments, tendons, skin etc etc

i agree its a lot more expenisve than say nutratech whey at 250 for 10kg. im finishing that off at the momment

but as im having it pwo only, it makes sense to have the best :)

same as putting home brew dodgy pretrol in your car over some high performance petrol. every little bit helps

Sounds like some sort of bull spun by the salesrep. There's no requirement for test results other than so they can do the label for the first run, after that you never know what's happening with subsequent runs of production. Most manufacturers probably get regular lab assays done of their product to check that it's close to spec however that applies worldwide not just in NZ. You could bring out a product in NZ and make up all sorts of shit about what's in it.

80% whey / 10% carb / 3% fate ... so what is in the 2g left over? IMO 100% should be 100%.

Well the rest of it is moisture, ash, minerals, etc. If the carbs, protein and fat adds up to 100% then the label is wrong and the are spinning you some shit, as in the ice whey stats you've listed the carbs, fat and protein only adds up to 93.8%.

how about bcaa caps? worth buying?

I think I can do a bare bones sketch of BCAA.

1.When you exercise, your muscles release large quantities of the amino acids Glutamine and Alanine, which get excreted and lost.

2.There are relatively low amounts of these aminos stored in your muscle, so your body needs to make these during exercise.

3.Supplementing with BCAA provides your muscles with the substrates to make glutamine and alanine and therefore spare any potential muscle catabolism.

And that's it, simple as that!

anyone got some facts to show if a expensive pp is better than stock standard wpc or casien blends??

The best data on this sort of thing come testing differing types of protein on burns patients in hospitals. http://journals.lww.com/jtrauma/Abstrac ... re.11.aspx

There's a whole bunch of studies that have similar findings.

Dude I like studies as much as the next guy but most bodybuilders don't use a nasoduodenal tube to by-pass the stomach whenever they have a protein shake. And this is a liquid hydrolyzed whey (not sure if it's isolate or just a concentrate) and hydrolyzed casein blend designed for people with impaired GI function not an over the counter protein powder.

You probably want to reference something like this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12537959

http://www.jissn.com/content/7/1/30

or this about hydrolysed proteins which references a lot of other studies

Wouldn't have a clue.

Had a look on that site, there's just so many options.

I see they sell bet-alanine, don't know anything about it. But logically, if that's one of the amino's your trying to replace by taking the BCAA's perhaps it's better just to take that? Maybe stack it with some glutamine, would probably work out cheaper.

They also sell free-form Leucine in 500 gram bags, which is the main BCAA,

if you got this it will work to spare muscle but also you could double it up as a growth hormone releaser if you took it on an empty stomach before bed. Even better, you could stack that with AAKG...

Kid in a candyshop.
