Iphone app for NZBB

It's on the To-Do list. Well, certainly an Android version is... I don't know about the iPhones. They're on their way out. :pfft:

Seriously though, what would you want in an app? How would it differ to accessing the site through a smartphone's web browser?

Androids where its at

Oh no you didn't!

As someone who has been banned from accessing this site from work, personally I would love an app. I find accessing the site normally through my iphone a tad annoying though, and a bit fidgety, so I haven't been accessing it lately. So it would simply be for easier navigation (by adding favourite threads, sections and using a rolling menu for each section).

Maybe a workout entry template for journals (I have one in a .txt file that I copy+paste on the PC anyway...), a pic viewer for the pics section (similar to FB, where you can "like" photos), smartphone-friendly text entry box (dunno about Android, but the iPhone's one is a b*tch to post from!)...

Have a few more ideas banging around in the headspace but just got into work and haven't had my coffee yet :snooty:

Just testing posting this from my Android phone. it's a bit fiddly navigation-wise, but probably no worse than any other forum would be when viewed through the browser. formatting seems to work ok.

Hmmm... longer messages don't seem to work so well - my input field just disappeared. And now it's back. How odd!

Never heard of Tapatalk before, SM. I've only just jumped on the smartphone wagon. But I'll look into it.

All in all though, I'm amazed at how well it does work. This site was never designed with smartphones in mind, and its full of hacks that I'd expect to break on a phone. So if it works at all, I'm stoked!

Cheers for the link, SM. Very interesting. The only issue I see with Tapatalk is that we've customised this forum quite heavily. I suspect the basic functions would still work, but there's a new feature I want to add that really should go mobile, and they definitely won't support that out of the box. So it's going to be a question of whether it's more cost-effective to buy a developer version of Tapatalk and tweak it, or simply concentrate on building a mobile-friendly skin that people can access using their phones' web browsers.

Either way, consider a phone version of NZBB on the To-Do list (which is growing longer by the day!)

Earlier this week I met with a web development company to discuss several new features, including going mobile. We looked at Tapatalk (thanks, SM!) and other options. In the end, the decision was to go for a mobile-friendly website skin to be accessed through the phone's browser, rather than an installable app. Either way was going to require significant modification to provide all the features I want to provide, but with an app, we'd have to do it twice - once for Android, and once for the uncivilised heathens on iPhones. The web-browsable solution caters to a wider range of people than just Android/iPhone users. It's also easier to update, and causes fewer security issues. All in all, web is where it's at! Probably something that looks a little like what you posted, Haakuturi.

Having said that, it's not likely to happen immediately. Right now, I'm focusing on other new features that (hopefully) will then pay for the development of this one. So it's coming, but you'll need to be patient!

Hi Pseu,

Being enough of a luddite that I never look "under the hood" any more, I can't speak for the alternatives... but I just spent a week browsing on my iPod Touch. Although the existing web page worked fine thru Safari, and found it occasionally a little frustrating - either that or I need to jam a finger in a pencil sharpener

Appreciating the cost issues, down the track something like Stuff's mobile app would be super.

I just recently got rid of the Android phone I had because it was slow as hell! Not sure whether it was just the phone or the actual android os but it was incredibly slow. Just switched to the iPhone and cant ever see myself going back!
