Nope your dead on. When you get weighed in they ask you for your opening attempts for each lift. You have up to 5 minutes before lifting starts to change these. After your first lift you submit your next lift to the table. This is just to ensure the comp runs as smooth as possible, when its your turn to lift the bar will be loaded and the rack set to your height (although pete Im not sure if the squat racks have pins low enough, just sayin :pfft: )

Having said all that, from my experience strongman and powerlifting events are amongst very few sports where your opposition are also your biggest supporters.

Well put, in The House's case we want to get our opposition firing and lifting to their best potentional, so when you beat them they have no exuses, not like some sports where you try to mind f*ck the guy before he gets to the platform. Beating some one at the top of his game is far better than a hollow MF victory, it also take a lot longer to recover mentally thats the true MF.

The reality is totally the opposite and from the time you front up until finishing your last lift everyone (including organisers, judges)will offer advice, assist, and make you feel welcome and put most of your nervousness and fears at rest.

Every one knows novice lifters are pretty amped by the time they take the platform, Im have seen them shaking like an earthquake so much adrenalin it turns in to fear. They do hear the commands forget what they are suppose to do. We have all been there so everyone just wants to help and make the lifters first experience an enjoyable one.

This is what I drum into The House lifters, you cannot control what the opposition lifts you can only control what you lift, concentrate on your lifts forget about him. The winning of a comp sometimes comes down to the second and last Dead, then if you have your PBs go for the win.

:pfft: :pfft: :pfft: :pfft: :pfft: :pfft:

I have read this whole thread its good to see everyone's opinions and how they think 8) this is what makes us who we are.... and who makes it to the top and who doesn't.......

everyone has chosen a path to get there some better than others, but hey what ever works for you...

myself I wasn't worried about winning in my last novice comps, it really depended on who turns up on the day uncontrollables, might just be you and then it might have someone stronger or a bunch off guys not as strong as you so it meant nothing, but by god i'll better PB that must happen i train and live for that its a sign off improvement and that i'm doing something right and moving forward....

But now my thoughts and actions have changed I am now at the stage where you know who are the best people in the country controllables .... and what the best lift records are and what weight classes these people were and are in to achieve these great feats they are great cause no ones beat them yet.... by knowing these totals and having a full understanding off how comps run and work its time to challenge the countries finest so its time to built up on my 3 lifts over a two year period and challenge them, but with whatever result i bring I shall remain humble as we are all human beings with the same love for moving tin....

So end off the day different stokes for different folks but the key is use whatever action you need to get your door bell fuckin ringing I wish everyone a very strong 2011 go move some serious tin....

I think powerlifting is a pretty unique sport. In the initial phase, you go into an event with a goal of what you want to lift and also knowledge that you can't control what others do. So if you achieve your goals then you should be over the moon and winning doesn't matter. I can remember be more concerned about my total than my opposition. This changes as you become more experienced of course. The first few comps are the most enjoyable for this reason IMO.

I totally agree with ya Doc, but I still think you need to bring that same attitude though with ya as a registered lifter I believe you still can't control what others will do on the day the smart ones anyway but this is where the fun is going to start by applying pressure on people in your weight class to make silly attempts / mind games I guess the not so smart ones so if this person decides to take part in the body and mind battle the winner will be the person who is in check of what his or her body is capable off now not then...which I think people often forget by the looks off some results from the past and recent comps ...

So three points that are needed more so now than as a novice lifter are and will be crucial (1) be strong (2) be smart (3) be realistic off where you are at this is where mind games and silly mistakes will cost you dearly if you don't take these points into consideration .. this is the bit I am going to enjoy.

if you are in any PL comp and you and couple other guys are pretty all closly even in ur weight class and its up the the last event the deadlift... what would u do if u need 15kgs more than ur gym PB to win but this is pretty slim chance u can do it... or would u settle with 5kg more than ur PB and know u will get it so u have beat yourself...?

Personal choice....... I would ask myself do I have 15kg and if ya have to think about it! I'll say get as close as you can to that 15kg and come back stronger cause if you miss that lift your total will take a hit as your second attempt will be your final weight added to your total assuming you got it.....and lets say it could mean coming second if you get as close as you can to the 15kg or fourth if you miss that lift what would you do....

this is the game part brother as stated above lol enjoy

Good queston bro. I like a bit of killer instinct. However there is also a great feeling of knowing that you achieved your goals. The reality is that it usually turns into a pissing contest and we jump too much and get second and don't PB either. Does t really matter if you win the Temuka Novice Pony Show?

Like I said, it gets different as you move through the "grades". The reality is you will have coaches at international events telling you what you are lifting. Sometimes this will be because your team needs points. In these situations become less important than placings.
