Bodybuilding is for people who want to get into S&M but havent realised it yet! They just love torture:pfft:

no seriously hats off to bodybuilders ,the dedication you requires is phenomenal, and more even admirable are the folks that have a family and still get it done for comps ,especially the ladies with kids.I cannot understand how they do it.

How can there be any argument? Bodybuilding is a sport and some of the finest athletes in the world participate in it.

I think Lee makes a good point about the posing. It must be incredibly difficult to do this well.

Not a sport. An activity....

PLing, Strongman are sports..... bodybuilding is more a athletic performance (a more physical version of a beauty peagant), however this takes nothing away from the sacrifice required to win.

Kinda like amatuer wrestling is a sport but pro wrestling isn't (kind of a choreographed sports based entertainment). Maybe BBing sits in the same class as performance arts like ballet? Seriously.

Nate at his provocative best! Is training for bodybuilding sport? How does powerlifting fit in here? Anyone can turn up and have a go on the day. And they often do. lol.

Powerbuilding is the sport of the future.

I'm going to be a powerbuilder. However I don't consider myself a Powerlifter nor a Bodybuilder 'til I compete. I agree that it's a sport. In sports you train. When you go to the gym and say you're training for bodybuilding comps, are you not training for something that is competitive? Sports are competitive. Bodybuilding is competitive. Therefore Bodybuilding is a sport.

Bodybuilding is competitive. Therefore Bodybuilding is a sport.

What exactly is the competition in bodybuilding?

It's a subjective modeling contest, no different than any other modeling contest in the world. The means to get to the stage may be different, as far as training, diet, "supplements" etc......but in the end, it's just a bunch of dudes standing onstage all oiled up to be judged....there is no direct competition.

Now to the powerlifting comment earlier by someone.......powerlifting is a sport as is strongman, either you lift the weight or you didn't and there is direct competition as in order to win you have to lift more than the other guys in your weightclass.

See the difference?

HAhA Even the spelling bee has a direct competition if you want to be precise about it....either you spelled the words right or not. There is no subjectivity to it.

What exactly is the competition in bbing? To "look" better than the rest of the guys on stage, right?

Not a sport.

Either you look better or you don't. Dieted better than the rest. Lost more water than the rest.

So who do you think looked better, Ronnie or Dorian? Levrone or Ray?

It's all an opinion in bbing....spelling bee is not an opinion, pling, not an opinion(not talking high squat multi ply feds), strongman, not an opinion.

BBing, jus tlike the Miss Universe is based on a group of judges opinions.

Hell even NASCAR is more of a sport than bbing........either you win or you don't.......

Gymnastics and diving is just an opinion yet for some reason they're in the Olympics. All the judges score differently, if the scoring is black and white how does this happen?

What do you class olympic diving, ice skating, surfing, snowboarding etc. as? Sport or no?

While they are also judged subjectively, I believe they have some kind of scoring system? A certain movement/trick is worth x amount of points, or compared to another movement is recognised as superior/inferior etc. They also display immense skill, which in my opinion is important in a sport. Whereas with bodybuilding I don't think (could well be wrong) the judging has as strict criteria to stick to, so there can be much larger discrepancies between judges.

In bodybuilding you get a ranking for each pose. The guys are genuine athletes.

In bodybuilding you get a ranking for each pose.

And that ranking is decided how? By the judges. Entirely different to having a set criteria for judging where say a back flip is better than a front flip etc.

Well there is a prize for best night show I'm pretty sure...

LOL, some men just can't be convinced......

Hey it's just my opinion. I'm not changing it

Bro in bodybuilding the training is the sport... the competition is a performance, especially the night show. We all know bodybuilding competition shape is bloody hard work... but it's the only sport where you don't perform the movements you train with...

I mean in gymnastics you do flips for training and you do them at contest... in bodybuilding we lift weights but there's none of them onstage!

But I still love it lol... always cracks me up a bunch of guys in a room covering themselves in oil and wearing tiny little posing trunks.. yet somehow they still manage to be all serious and carry on like their hard guys ha ha ha ha it's not hard to see why people think we are just a wee bit weird!!!!!

Who gives a shit how it's classified

But if the people are saying it isn't purely because there's no skill and no set judging criteria etc, stop making these statements based off amateur competitors and the NZIFBB

Rugby's best referee's are given the rule book and they interpret the rules as how they feel they should be applied. Gymnastics judges see things differently yet are judging off the same supposed criteria

I think it is sport because it is an organised competitive event. I know not all competitive events would fall into this category but I don't know what else to call it, it certainly isn't "art"

I think it's closer to art than sport... because it's so subjective.. I mean is a beauty pageant art or sport?

I only refer to the competition aspect of bodybuilding. The training is sport for sure but we don't get judged on our training, just on the results of it.

Dancing is a sport isn't it?
