When is a bodybuilder not a bodybuilder?

I disagree with those saying "If you don't compete you are not a body builder"

The competition is to see who is the best body builder, implying they are already body builders.

To be specific I would say a body builder is as the words say.

Building body.

*Gaining size to their ENTIRE body from their original frame.

*Diet comes into it to. As body building is separate to weight training and the diet helps build your body. So a specific, strict diet to gaining mass.

*Attending the gym 5+ a week.

*Working to be as big as you possibly can.

If any of those do not describe you, I would say you're not a body builder.

dammit i thought id put this matter to rest in my mind! i think your dead right.. i dont think your points are as definite as that though. for instance im finding i get my best results training 4x a week. also isnt rest/recovery a big aspect as any? speaking of that i should have been in bed a hour ago :?

Well you may be right. They are my opinions of what make a body builder. And those results would be best fit for your current routine. I'm sure you could make a routine where you gym more often ;)

I consider myself a weight trainer. I have not got the anally structured diet, to call myself a bodybuilder. I think the latter involves serious lifestyle choices, over and above those required of a weight trainer.

I eat well, ensure I have enough protein, carbs and fats, but I enjoy chicken skin too much. I am not aiming for the stage. But I am aiming for personal awesomeness.

people that go to the gym for years there stocky but not muscley by any use of the word does weights with terrible form there is no visible change in there body over years,

only way you would know that they are "bodybuilders" is there use of a weight belt to hold there pants up always, there figure hugging (by figure i mean their fat gut) bodybuilding t shirts, and the oh so impressive air lats that they sport.

Water melons must be plenty full these days lots of dudes seem to be carrying them under there arms
