Bit of a moot point for me now...I had a strap break today just as I hit a PB on deadlift, so no more straps for a while :pfft:

Once the gym owner realised the reason for the unholy racket wasn't that I'd just dropped it, he then proceeded to explain why I shouldn't use straps. The same reasons being debated here, and that I've heard from plenty of others. Personally though, I prefer to go as far as I can on pulls without straps, then when my grip fails, strap up and keep going. There's no way I'd have hit that PB without straps, just like I wouldn't be shrugging or Kroc-ing what I am without straps. Currently these are the only 3 exercises I use them for.

If I was training for a powerlifting comp, then naturally I'd train the way I was going to compete, ie no straps. But that isn't my goal.

Surprisingly, the gym owner also told me that people shouldn't be lifting with belts, wraps or anything. I don't use wraps, but do use a belt for safety.

Ronin, even DL-ing for a PL comp there is a place for straps... you dont just do 1rm sets all the time... so your grip wears out and u must use them to get ur back stronger.

i use a over over grip with straps every 2nd DL workout and an over under grip without straps on the other

hahaha. Nono, I'm still going to need them for barbell rows and t-bar rows, things like that.

No, just throw them in the trash. I learned the hard way.....maybe you have to lighten up a bit at first, but you'll catch back up quickly.

Straps have their place. I use them for all of my lat training. Your grip will fail before your lats.

to true!

Just like working out in general......what works for one doesn't work for all. My grip is just as strong at the end of a workout as it is at the beginning now after training for sometime without straps. If someone feels they need straps then by all means strap up, but don't complain about a weak grip if you're using straps.....lol.

DrSquat doesn't have weak grip, as proven..

its all about the callous

i like to use straps in the later of my top sets (engery and grip depending and not all the time) as usually by that time my hands feel like they have been doused in jet fuel and set alight usually takes me 30 mins after a train to clinch my hands again

imo the more you work on your deads without straps the stonger your hands are gonna get. but when grip fails switch to straps.
