I'm already aware that I'll be a bit weak coming into but it's all in experience.

You are far from weak bro. Lower your expectations slightly and nail the technique. Then you can take multiple steps forward.

Technique is the one thing I try to better myself at every week. Expectations - yes - but not so much as it is a goal. Just the weights to try and strive to get, to make me push myself to those weights and beyond. But first, I have to get technique on lock down.

Yes I agree technique is the main focus as I stated all off us are still trying to master that part mate it will take time under the bar but you will pick up the fundamentals quick, as a few posts back you said you were going to bring your feet closer maybe the opposite mate take them out a little bit more but move them out slowly week by week until you feel comfortable most cases people seem to be just outside shoulder width raw and a little bit more suited, I have only seen one guy you can get depth with a close stance and I'm talking feet at shoulder width or closer that is very hard as your body wants to drop forward but if it works great that will mean i have seen too people, I will be keeping an eye on your progress good luck mate and I hope to see ya at Bbro 2011

Its the only comp i will be having a go at this year, its an awesome atmosphere look forward to seeing ya there take on whats being said and better yourself

stay strong

I've practiced doing a wider stance before, and I find my abductors begin to cramp up. I think having them closer would make it easier to become lower than parallel. But I'm just a kid so I'm open to everyone's advice.

My abductors still take a pounding brother but regulator stretching has helped thats why i say take it out slowly so it not major changes.

tell ya what get a broom stick and try close stance in mirror things to watch out for

1/ knees travelling forward

2/ body not staying in line with bar by this the bar should travel in a straight line up and down not come forward

3/ get top off knee in line with hips ( i prefer to break parallel that saves alot off problems for judges you are having a bad day )

and do the same with feet just outside shoulder width and see what is easier to hit depth don't take into account abductor pain you'll beat that just stretch well

oh and push back with hips first don't bend the knee first push back it is different than bending the knee first

I can easily get below parallel with a close stance, just coming forward is the problem. I've already figured that stretching the abductors would help, and this may sound stupid, but I'd never actually learned or found any stretches that are very effective on my abductors

ok there are a few that have helped me hard to explain in words so you can google it and see if ya can find some you haven't tried, oh well if you think you can hit depth with narrow stance thats good but get it checked out from the above name or the team at powerhouse before turning up to bbro mate tip of the day 8)

I'm gonna be the odd man out here and suggest that squatting form is more personal than anything. We're all going to have different levers and different strong & weak points in the chain.

I do agree with the fellas about technique, and based on your video you do have some issues to work on (depth being one) from a PLing standpoint, but fortunately there's nothing majorly wrong there.

As far as I'm concerned, technique is about finding what works for your build and then hammering down consistency.

Hey guys. As some of you may know I'm 17 and about 5'2"-5'3" closing in on 70 kgs. TinyTraps as made me a bit interested in doing the BBro and I'm hoping to get to a 190kg squat 160 kg deadlift 110 kg bench. (460 total my total now would be about 380). I can deadlift 160 kg easy, but with straps. I can do about 120 or so with chalk and staggered grip so does anyone have some techniques - other than doing deads with chalk, staggered grip and forearm work - that would improve my grip on deadlifts so I could hopefully get to about 180?

Lose your straps, forever.

hahaha. Nono, I'm still going to need them for barbell rows and t-bar rows, things like that.

No, just throw them in the trash. I learned the hard way.....maybe you have to lighten up a bit at first, but you'll catch back up quickly.

My main focus is bodybuilding anyway. I prefer to have the contraction there. My grip is already getting better on deadlifts as well. With an overhand grip on barbell rows it would be pretty hard to row 120 and still be able to control it and hold it even with chalk and I can't go staggered grip because that hits the lats differently.

Straps have their place. I use them for all of my lat training. Your grip will fail before your lats.

Yeah, I'm not risking my grip just to miss out on one of the main muscle groups

Good call. You can build your grip up with deadlifting and shrugs. A blanket "no straps" rule makes no sense. I use straps for everything and I have no grip issues with my deadlift.
