Wolfs Gym - Henderson

Recommended Posts

Pseudonym suggested I copy my review of Wolfs gym from my Journal, so it's a repeat of what you read there, if you did, if you didn't then it's not a repeat of what you didn't read ... right?

The guy at the counter is Wolf never met him before in my life and I had only just mentioned AllenNZ was inside the gym training and he cracked a joke with me about him being banned in most other gyms except his - LOL I like this guy already!

Wolfs gym is like a mini Golds gym but with less air-conditioning and not much room to move between machines. Lots of machines though so good for bodybuilders. I was impressed by things like ezy-curl pre-loaded barbells as well as straight bar ones...until my mate pointed out that there's no room to use them really.

With machines you can pack more exercises into a small space cause you don't need anymore room around you and this is what Wolfs gym does very well, but I'm not sure where you swing the barbells...is it in front of the mirrors in front of the guys doing seated dumbbell curls?

Today wasn't that hot but it was sweaty inside with no air conditioning, no fans, just open doors. So walking outside between exercises was a huge relief, they need to move the air around, one time the only breeze I got was a guy walking past me but at least it was something.

I didn't wander around the whole gym but you can see everything from whereever you are. Am told they will add a mezzanine floor and move some stuff up there.

Cable pull-down for Back

The wide-grip pulldown bar was the kind with handles facing inwards. Except this one the handles were able to rotate. It was totally weird and uncomfortable to use I had to keep my thumb outside the handle and on the bar to make sure it didn't spin on me. With a heavy weight the last thing I want to do is use a sub-optimal grip on the bar just to hold it in place.

We did seated cable rows and did the stack, so either the weight doesn't go heavy enough...or my form is bad. Take your pick.

Nice gym, nice machines, won't be back

Wolfs Gym is probably one of the best if not the very best gym in the country.

Whilst desperately in need of air conditioning (or issuing members those hats with fans in them) Winter it is no problem, also the db's in lbs not kgs was a bit of a challenge for me.....so I had to think.

On the maching a 20k plate is still a 20k plate :)

Hell I even appreciate the changing rooms having timed showers to save water and lights that only go on when someone walks in, nice to see a bit of energy saving consideration.

Wow u think?

As I said I only did a Back workout and didn't walk around and check out the mens room and electrical enhancements or have any other kind of workout.

It is like a mini Golds which is kinda cool and I hope they spread them out when they get the Mezzanine floor, but I dislike weaving in and out of machines just to get from A to B.

It has been likened accurately to a mix between Golds and Dohertys in Melbourne (also has equipment packed in tight).

I don't find it too much of a problem to move around, I guess your used to more spacious setups, better to be a tight fit that fits everything than a loose fit with stuff missing.

Its definately a bodybuilding gym and not Wolfs "fitness"....no zumba.

Wolfs always good for a chat too.

Have trained casually at Wolfs on and off over the last 6 months. Mike plays down the "bodybuilder gym" tag a bit so as to not scare off the general public but it has a healthy and supportive training culture there.

IT's very well equipt from that point of view and quality gear to boot. It's one of the few places these days you can train without an ipod and hear some quality electro over the PA. :D

No contracts, no chalk and plenty of shinny mirrors ... Bodybuilding heaven!

Just as an update to this review, Wolf's now has several big fans to keep air moving around the gym. They recently put them on timer switches too, so you can push a button to turn the fans on for 30 minutes. Because members have access to the gym 24x7, being able to turn on the fans makes a huge difference if you're training in the middle of the night when the doors and windows are closed. (And yes, you'd be amazed at how many people train at 1am on a Saturday morning!)

i have been thinking to go and hav a look at the gym but unfortunately the website has been closed due to financial issues. anyone got the number?

Gee mgs.co.nz sound like a bunch of wankers. Costing them $35/day to keep a server online is just plain bullshit. More like $35/mth...and that's if you don't know what you're doing.

On topic, I must go back and check it out on a hot day

summer is a struggle. guys are cool there. Music is shit. seriously shit. it goes from chill out house music and now has moved to some station called Flava. where every two minutes you have to listen to the DJ rabbit on between boom boom hip hop shit.

call me silly but a gym full of metal should be playing music that gets the energy moving. I am now taking my ipod for workouts

Hey guys. Used to go Westwave before I left now looking for something else locally since it looks like ill be back here for at least 5 months. Anyone attending Wolfs Henderson at the moment and mind commenting on whether this review is still accurate? Does it get real busy, packed etc.? Still good atmosphere to workout in? Their pricing is a little more than what I was paying before but seems like it would be well worth since it sounds like a proper gym with 24 hour access.

I have trained at wolf's in the morning on trips to Auckland and it is very quite.I have only had wait for a short time to use the smith machine while a person was done with it.Wolfs would have to be my fave gym out in Henderson

thanks gymrat, i just signed up looking forward to training now. didnt take a good look around yet but from a glance it looked really legit, all the good stuff which you see the pros using in the dvds *dirol*. gonna probably start tomorrow following advice from physio then gonna go hard for the new gymnation summer challenge & hopefully start a log for it *dance4*

oh yeah some of the info the guy at the counter gave me was that their new north shore branch is due to open in a couple of weeks and membership cards will work on both branches which is great. the new branch will also be bigger, apparently sport lots more cardio equipment and he said something about crossfit there too which sounds interesting.

Training legs there tomorrow at 5:30 pm if keen. Last leg train before my show so will be hardout. Let me know if anyone wants to join in

oh real, woulda been good to finally see the famous Leeroid in person in contest mode too.. just missed you lol was in there 3.30pm to 5.15pm.

awesome as gym. looks small from a glance but really packed with useful stuff. kind of cramped but in a good way since its cramped with equipment and not with people like most other gyms.

Damn FOTR, I went in at 6 and just finished my leg workout and met Josef Rakich. He looks crazy in real life haha. He might be doing physique at waikatos which would be fantastic. Personally I think he would take out the nz physique title if he competed.

Spent the last 3 days working out at wolf's and gotta say I love it. Lots of big cats around too which makes for good motivation although it can get a bit cramped. Great gym
