Training Partners

Interested in thoughts about training with a partner or training alone.

Myself, I couldn't imagine training alone. The benefits of a good reliable partner for me are:

- Helping load weights;

- spotter;

- learn from each other;

- training tempo;

- encouragement;

- friendly rivalry;

There are downsides too. I go through a few training partners for a variety of reasons. The main one is that we often just grow apart (non romantic sense) in training views. Not that I am stubborn lol.

Others prefer to train alone and do so successfully. I know I could never achieve as much in the gym if I trained this way.

Anyway, a positive thread about some alternative views...

when i was doing my BB training i prefer to train alone... like to do what i want when i want and show up when it suits me.

now that im PL training i need one asap.

i think when u find u really need and want one u will make sacrifices and compromise.

of course no training partner is better than a shit one.

It's impossible to reach a high level of intensity without a training partner. You can't spot yourself? So you can't reach true failure without a spotter...

I agree with the doc about how your training partner will eventually go stale... you just don't click anymore lol.

It's normally because the junior TP thinks they know more and the senior TP is too stubborn. :pfft:

My best experience was when I trained with former IFBB pro Dave Smith. I just shut up and did as I was told for 18 months. I turned up at the gym and trained. Spent a lot of time in the toilet. My point is that if you can find someone who you are prepared to learn from, it can work well.

Did you have an upset stomach?

This :nod: Could not agree more, and I also think a proper time schedule is crucial.. reminds me of my first TP who would text the day before and not all times matched. I have learned loads from the people I have trained with too, of course training alone is hard, but can't be helped in some situations- still get someone to spot so you can go to full failure without getting hurt :pfft:

I find for some reason I go harder and get better results alone I'm also much stricter on rest periods and the general intensity of the session goes up, on the flipside it does lend a bit of confidence always having a spotter there and not having to go interrupting other people.

I train alone because its easier for me to go to the gym when I want/ can slot it in.

It does stop you going to failure on some exercises but you can work around that.

Might take a little longer results wise but workouts are quicker!

No talking mucking around

From not having a TP I can totally see where having one gives you an advantage, I cant go to failure on heavy bench, squat anything when your under the bar. Im sure that would mean some good growth

Then again like a few have been saying I don't take the longest rest periods, and I keep my workouts intense, I dont know how that would be effected with a training partner, perhaps the intensity would come from those last sets the TP was there for?

I like training alone for the same reasons as you tomsammce. Plus :

I like being in control of my workout;

The chances that my training partner is doing the same exercises, weights, rests between sets as me etc are remote because my training programme is tailored for me, and changes every 10 weeks;

It would stress me waiting and wondering if my partner is going to turn up, which would muck up my workout;

I'd talk too much if I had a training partner;

If I need a spotter, the gym instructors at the YMCA are only too happy to help;

I get all the motivation and advice I need from my Personal Bodybuilding Consultant, Kaye O'Neill - so dont need a training partner to provide that.

Do you reckon you push as hard without a TP bro?

yeah bro for sure... when its was on it was on! obviosuly heavy delt presses, benches and squats couldnt go as heavy but i just did more intensity.

thing is with training partners...

if you train with someone who gotta better physique than u and is stronger than u... shut the f*ck up and do what they say. if you got a training partner who is smaller and weaker than u then u are the boss and u decide what exercises to do etc. i hate these lil cunts who think they know better and f*ck up my workouts lol. i think alot of that has to do with unsureness if what the bigger guy is doing will work for me kinda thing. everyone thinks they know best and no one wants to put faith in anyone else

thats y i liked training with my little brother, unfortunatly this isnt possible anymore since we live on opposite side of auckland. but whatever i did he did and now he bigger than me... and stronger on a few exercises than me... go figure.

natural too.

Ditto for me. When I've trained with mates they always hold me back and we end up chatting too much, can focus much better alone.

I'm that new guy. I have training partners who have years more experience and know SHIT LOADS more than me. Right now, I just do everything they suggest.

It's working for me. Great way to learn (technique/form, nutrition, gym etiquette ...), to get pushed pass failure - safely, to have people keeping you in check and a reason to keep going every night so you don't slack off.

I like to think I bring something to the 'team' as well but I totally admit that I get more out of it than they do (because of the learning factor), and that's why I accept their split, their chosen exercises, their preferred time of day, and will lend them my dive tanks any time they want!

  • 2 weeks later...
I wouldn't mind a training partner, except no girls wanna train with me :(

i would but its a bit far!! In all seriousness tho I'd love a TP, to push me as well as watch my form etc, and I'd be way more comfy in the mens gym at LM city if I was with a burly girl/guy as there's heaps more equipment downstairs. Too intimidated to go down there on my own!! :grin:

That's a shame. I didn't realise that this still went on! That's the beauty of training in a wanker free environment I guess. :nod:

In all seriousness, I would say that 99 out of 100 guys would not notice that you were there. That's of course if they are the real deal.

:ditto: If the guys are there to train, they're generally not going to pay a lot of attention.

Of course, if you had a female training partner, they're twice as likely to notice... is gender important in a training partner?

I have trained with girls before and they are as good as any guy to train with provided they have the same objectives/intensity.
