Side Lateral Raise

Whats everyones opinions on technique here?

Personally Ive been keeping my arms fairly straight, and leaning slightly forward but also keeping the elbows up.

I've noticed some bend there arms quite a bit, and thats what brought up the question.

How does everybody do them? Or anyone got some insight on what may be better?

Cheers

Interesting topic, and something I think about as there seems to be a million different ways that people do 'em.

I start from the side of my hips and raise them up, as I find that stops cheating by getting momentum going rocking yourself back and forward (which you can slip into when the DBs start from in front of you). I can't go as heavy with this method, but I find it targets the muscle better.

If I'm forcing reps on the last set or so though, I'll start from in front to use a bit of cheat.

My elbows are generally soft like PD says, I try not to bend them.

Interested to hear how everyone else does 'em

I sit on a bench with ankles crossed in front to stop any cheating. I find the secret is not to go to heavy. Dont want to do any damage

Im exactly the same. Mine are seated with only very slightly bent elbows, strict form and a light to moderate weight.

I sit down as well. Use a mirror  and make sure your side delts are "talking" to you. I pyrmaid so I get the benefit of heavy (5-6 reps) and lighter (10-15 reps).

Reasonable bend in your elbows. It's all about the feel.

I concentrate on having my elbows always higher than my hands, so my arms start straight when by my side but at the top theres a slight bend to keep my elbows high.

The more you bend your arms the easier the weight is to move, i.e. bringing the weight closer to the axis of rotation.

Yeah i think that is best for all methods, just getting the front delts out of the action.

I find that bringing them forward is harder too so I focus on that.

Anyone tried one sided versions?

I like this standing version with the starting point in front, elbows high & tilt out at the top. You will see some of the top BBers using this form. It targets the lateral head & gives good ROM & you can use fairly heavy weight. As you get to failure you can lean forward a bit to get the last couple out & swing them up. Your partner can stand behind ou & spot quite easily. Do some heavy sets then finish with 20-30 reps of a real light weight with your spotter assisting for total blowout.
