Crossover from high bar squats to power squats

Rookie

Recommended Posts

An interesting topic raised in BarBrother's thread, I have raised this discussion because I have been focusing on the high bar squat for a while, going below parallel and concentrating on building my quads.

Since my objective is to compete in PLing comps, I was wondering what PLers think/have experienced in relation to crossover from high bar/closer stance squats to wide power squats? I will be doing both box squats and high bar squats during the week.

Just a thought...

I'll quote my previous statement in the other squat thread:

Comes back to basics....how does one get stronger?

a) Get bigger muscles (mechanical advantage - larger fibres can create greater contractile force)

b) Become more technically proficient / Optimise leverages / shorten ROM's

c) Get more neurologically efficient (able to recruit more fibres, therefore greater contractile force)

Thats the basics, although there probably are a few more ways (changes to intramuscular fluid retention etc, use of stimulants etc although these kinda fit into mechanical advanatge & recruitment respectively).

So Doc's statement is well covered by a) although too much focus on a deep a2g squat may impact on b) if not enough comp squatting is done at the same time.

A good balance between hypertrophy full ROM and comp type squats seems sensible to me to maximise PLing performance.

A bit off topic but interesting (to me anyway).

Capeesh?

Better leg development from high bar full ROM will support your max PLing stance squat, unless you severely detrain this movement by not doing enough PLing squats as well.

Cheers Nate! Just got back into box squats today (wide stance and box was just below parallel)

Makes sense too, look forward to seeing what my PL squat will be like in May since I'm taking both high bar squats and box squats seriously

Rookie, this could be a bit of you.

Basically, Kyle Newell, has a view that bodybuilders need to beef up their hams and posterior chain in general. Box squats could be the way.

I like his thinking and I think the same applies to powerlifters who have poor quads.

Both sports can learn from each other.

Thanks mate, the 180 on the box didn't feel too hard since I've been investing time in high bar squats. Will keep chipping away and focus on weak points!
