Footwear for squatting/leg training

I currently train in chuck taylors. I do feel a little bit more stable or feel like im trying to push through my heels compared to running shoes i used to train in.

I would like to train barefoot someday to see if it makes any difference. (not sure if my gym allows it as well).

Also wear basketball shoes sometimes but find my weight can be shifted to the balls of my feet.

Does support matter alot doc? I've never really thought about it much during my squatting

To be honest mate, I find cross trainers supportive enough. If your feet are rolling around then it may help to have something around your ankles such as basketball boots. Bare feet or socks- not ideal!

So the support thing (in your opinion) is just something to be conscience of but not necessarily neeeded?

I just don't like the idea of using cross trainers because of the compression in the heels. Not saying it's wrong, just doesn't seem ideal. Then again ball boots may do the same and they feel fine for me

IMO it's about comfort. The last thing you want is to be worrying about your feet when you have a lot of weight on your back.

I haven't really noticed compression in the heel bro.

Chucks here too. Used to use trainers, then heard about the whole compression thing so I tried barefoot, got told off and brought some chucks. I prefer the chucks to trainers, I just feel more stable. Agree with Doc that feeling stable/comfortable would be the most important aspect. A flat sole may be praised by many, but if it doesn't feel right for you then don't use them, simple.

Squat shoes...(DOWINS).

Compression of the shoes sole is not ideal & rolling from side to side is definately out! Nickoli used to squat 300+ in running shoes, was diabolical!

He's now moved to SAFE Squat shoes - he reckons they're much better.

I'd suggest work boots or hiking boots with very solid soles. Once you're moving serious weight a pair of squat shoes may be a good option.

I know the WSB craze led to everyone wearing Chucks, my observation was it was mainly as guys were squatting ultrawide stance (from monolifts not squat walkouts) so a raised heel like a traditional squat shoe may be less ideal.

Been training for a million years and just recently bought a pair or $10 imitation chucks and they're the best training shoes ever, well for me at least. Have traditionally always squatted with boots and/or hightop basketball type trainers for the ankle support but I am really liking how these thin soles make me feel the whole movement from the floor up. Best for calf training too!

For me that is.... to each their own!

After hearing the virtues of a flat, solid sole, I bought a cheap pair of canvas shoes. Absolutely hated them. They really showed how badly I need a raised heel to squat properly. So now I'm back to squatting in running shoes. I'm sure it's frowned upon by the pros, but it's miles more comfortable for me. Plus I think the spongy soles help me bounce out of the hole. :pfft:

Back squatted in a pair of shot put shoes, which were similar to wrestling boots without the heel support.

Oly back and front squatted in Adidas oly shoes.

Infamously squatted 350 in a pair of bright blue beach shoes from the warehouse, and got called a bunch of names... :pfft:

After squatting 350 the only thing anybody should be calling you is SIR! :pfft:
