Volume vs HIT

I would have said HIT a few years ago but now believe in a hybrid.

The Westside approach to training is about breaking a record (one top set as in HIT) and then performing a volume based approach with several assistance exercises with lots of sets and reps. Classic powerbuilding stuff.

What would a typical HIT workout consist of?

3 to 4 exercises per muscle group 2 warm up sets then 1 working set per exercise on the working set you usually shoot for 6 to 12 reps to failure and then you can do forced reps to really kill the muscle or any other trick like negatives , drop sets etc also you rest periods should not exceed 90 secs better if only 60 secs you really need to give those working sets everything you got and more to make this system work sounds too easy for all the volume guys but trust me it aint i love this type off training

What would a typical HIT workout consist of?

My HIT chest workout is

bench

1-2 warmups

1 heavy workset/ add in dropsets overloads etc

Incline d/b press

1 warmup

1 heavy set

dips

1 heavy weighted set/ dropset bw for reps

finish off with pec deck or cables supersetted with pushups for a pump

usually 3-4sets

its good fun can do the whole workout in around 20mins if you dont have too much rest

made my best gains since switching from high volume around a year ago but thats just me to each their own

What would a typical HIT workout consist of?

Mike Menzter wrote a book called Heavy Duty and Dorian wrote Blood and Guts. Both excellent reads.

The basic philosphy is one top set for each exercise. You warm up and then go to failure and beyond on that one top set. Menzter took it to the extreme towards the end and was advocating training once every 2 weeks.

Dorian kept it a bit more simple and even suggested doing two top sets in his workouts with a traditional split.

good topic,

I been volume training for just over a year now, i have seen good gains.

I would love to try HIT but im worried it wont build mass like volume training.

The idea of a 40min workout is very appealing.

Has anyone else new to bodybuilding (less than 2 years) had good gains in size with HIT?

Yeah mate, I've really enjoyed it, added some good mass through doing so

Good stuff, did you alter anything else? i.e lower calorie intake due to shorter workouts?

HIT and HIT-like, low-volume hard-work training work like magic for about six weeks after a phase of high volume training. Low-volume training with One Big Set also works really well on low calories/low carbs.

Funny enough, high volume training works pretty well after a cycle or two of HIT training. It's almost like your body adapts, or something.
