WTF is "raw"?

WTF do people mean when they use the word 'raw' on this forum? eg "I want to bench 150kg raw"

As far as I'm concerned you either bench 150, you fail and it drops on you, or you do 1/4 range of motion (in which case you didn't really bench it).

Which one of those is 'raw' ??

Seems like a waste of a word to me.

Raw means no bench shirt!

How much does a shirt or suit improve your lift? I thought some of the weights people have posted were just BS... now its just that maybe they have a suit :pfft:

yeah some of it is BS

There are some genuinely strong people here too!

"Quoted from an article, may be of some help.

I think initially there was some merit to gear being used for protection from injuries. The carryover was minimal and the chance for a pec tear on the bench may have been slightly less with the use of a bench shirt from 1980.

Still, the only real reason most people wore it in 1980 was to get extra pounds. Even early days in powerlifting you had guys putting tennis balls behind their knees in the squat and having people move the squat stands out of the way instead of walking weights out.

Eventually the technology got better I think around the late 90s and people started to get serious pounds out of bench shirts and squat suits (deadlift suits as well, but not to the degree of bench and squat suits). The materials became more supportive and the techniques of the lifters changed to give maximal carryover from the equipment lifters could use wider stances without hip problems, and tuck more on the bench press while getting maximum support.

Now gear is excellent, the top multiply guys are getting around 250lbs out of a bench shirt and 300 out of squat gear. The top singleply guys I am not to sure, but it is catching up (the biggest reason I think multiply numbers are higher is that the judging is much much more relaxed and there is 0 drug testing usually).

I am a fan of powerlifting gear. I think that it adds a new element of skill to the sport. You can't just throw on a bench shirt and set a 250lbs PR, it takes lots of specific training and practice to do this. I like the challenge of learning the gear, but I absofuckinlutely love handling weights that are very supermaximal and heavy".

Ive never been impressed by shirted benching its the shirt adding 30-40% not the lifter??

What is the raw record kennelly or mendelson has it right? 700-750ish pounds? then shirted up 1100 ish.... 180 extra in a shirt? i might as well say i can bench 155 but with a spot or a crane under the bar i can press 40% more lol

I have alot of respect for powerlifters and the sport but it would be so much better if the majority of the feds were raw rather than equipped imo

I like raw better too but shirted benching (and suited squatting) has its place. If we're talking a NZ context all gear is IPF approved and really doesn't add that much, unlike the 200+lb shirts some feds in the states allow. I'd be lucky if an IPF shirt gave me 25kg, although some master shirts better than others.
