Freakish lifts/standout lifts

Rookie

Recommended Posts

Just thought I`d start a thread on people`s strengths in the gym, mainly lifts that are "freakish" or standout from everything else. I`ve met a few people here who are insane benchers- heard a story of 75kg guys benching over 170  Have found that Japanese dudes have insane arches coupled with short limbs- even guys over 6ft have rather short arms for their height.. A 6ft 1 guy was benching 140x8-10, a BBer and doesnt tuck elbows or anything but R.O.M seemed rather short.

Was curious as to what lifts people are "freaky" at and why they think that is. How far/how early on do you find out you`re a gifted bencher/squatter/DLer?

Ive seen a BBer in ChCh at 74kgs bench 170 for reps with perfect form completely raw. Very impressive considering body weight. Normal sized limbs too.

I saw All Black Ben Franks squat 240kg at my gym which was wicked to watch.

He does weigh about 120kg? A "high" double bodyweight squat for a single. Not that freaky but not bad for a rugby player agreed.

240 would be a warm up in your gym Dr?

Im always amazed at how little the top rugby players lift.

It's still a big squat bro. And these guys have to get around the park! Rugby is probably still catching up with other professional sports where they have some really strong boys (NRL, AFL, NFL). I hear that some of the South African forwards are farken strong.

I think its more of the initial suprise of seeing these guys who are portrayed as superhuman in the media then seeing what they lift and being completely underwhelmed. Sure they are the whole package speed, size, strength, fitness and its sports specific training its just a little dissapointing.

Val Adams posts some numbers in training that would make your eyes pop out.

Valeries shoulder press would be ridiculous I'd imagine!

When you look at all blacks strength in the gym you can't compare it to powerlifters. Rugby players train for functional strength, not to see what they can one rep max on a compound movement. Powerlfters do. Apples and oranges. And i'd like to see many powerlifters follow up a 240kg squat with a 10km run in under 45mins!

As far as lifts I've seen myself i've been out squatted by an 85kg guy before (I was 115kg at the time). We had 225 on the bar. I just eked out 8 reps, he managed 9 the bastard. Thought that was pretty good.

Have never witnessed anything along the lines of the numbers doc squat was pulling out when he was a junior. Must have made some jaws drop hey doc?

Seems like a 100 years ago and 100 kilograms ago mate.

Some NZ lifting I have seen:

I can remember seeing Cathy Millen repping 120 kg in the bench at about 75 kg. This was in the mid 1990s. I think she was the first NZ woman to bench 100 kg. That was impressive.

I saw Colin Cox squat 363 kg and become the first NZer to squat 800 pound. That was in 1991 I think? The same year I saw Derek Pomana squat 350 kg at 110 kg and Kevin Judson squat 310 kg at 82.5 kg.

I lifted against Wade Hopper at the 1992 Worlds and got a touch up. We were in the 67.5 kg class and Hooper squatted about 260 kg to my 220 kg and I think he did me in the bench by about 50 kg too. We tied in the deadlift and he got me on bodyweight. Hooper went on to be a multiple world champion and record holder. He was very impressive even back then when he was probably only 20.

1504.7 (682.5) *7.72X Cathy Millen (New Zealand/67) 5/28/94 (260.0+162.5+260.0=682.5 kg. @ 88.4 kg.) (Rotorua, New Zealand) (IPF)

Cathy has bench pressed 407.5 pounds at a body weight of 185 lbs.

Still holds a few records too. Doesn't surprise me genetic godess when it came to womens strength in NZ. Remember she had really dense muscle especially around her shoulders. Nice lady.

.....

I think its much freakier when you see guys/gals move heavy load during a routine workout . (Informal).

I saw Victor Richards warm up seated press b/b with 160kg (repping).

Rueben Dejong repping 200kg on incline press ....

Ed Fong Squat 260kg raw - 10+ reps (ass in the grass right down) - I think his b/weight was around 90kg mark. maybe slightly heavier.

My wife used to bench 70kg during a routine w/out (reps) - (may be I just thought it was impressive as it used to clear the surrounding equipment of most guys having a perve :pfft: )

  Wow! That's amazing stamina! It even puts Tom Platz effort to shame. You'll have to excuse my ignorance bit what sort out lifts did Rodney go on to acheive? And what was his bodyweight at the time?

Rodney was born to lift. He was around 5ft 8ish and weighed in around 103-107kg BUT put together with brute natural power. My brother trained with his cousin who was a very strong BB so I got the pleasure of training with them on the odd occassion. I thought I was a strong junior squatter until I experienced this butt serving as I stayed with him upto 180 but I only managed 14 or so but he just carried on, and on and on!! He holds varies NZ powerlifting junior records and I have no doubts had he stayed in the sport, would have made it to the big time like the Millens, Pomanas etc.

Amazing - 200 reps. Not so much as a freaky lift but total raw strength. These sorts of numbers are the mark of strength & endurance both physically & mentally IMO & what I admire more than any freaky 400kg 1 rep squat. Sorry Doc, no offence
