NABBA South Island Championships Dunedin

NABBA

I went along to the 2011 South island champs which were held the performing arts center at Kings high school. It felt very strange being back at my old school since I left school 1994.There were 43 athletes competing in the show mostly novice athlets competing for the first time.It was nice to see a show back in the deep south for the first time since the 2005 NZFBB South island champs. There were few people competing from my gym.Supplement me had tables set up and they samaples of size on,super pump, intra pro from Gaspari, muntant mass etc.Got meet Oldfella at the show it was nice to meet another member from this fourm. It was a well run show with everything starting on time.During the overalls for the mens athletic class. One of the athlets who was competing in that class got DQ  and got told off by a NABBA offical.I thought that person must feel bumed out just now.I took lots of photos while I was at the show including photos of all the diffrent classes.I thought cool all the athlets came out on stage and posed down before the start of the night show.At the start of the second half of the night show there was zumba which is a major gym peve in my book.

I went along as well for the judging rounds, first show I'd ever been to and really enjoyed it  Friend of mine came in 1kg too heavy so got put up from figure into physique, and still managed a very close 2nd. Her first show so she was absolutely stoked. In my opinion she had the best physique but likely lost out to better posing from a more experienced competitor.

Was a really close competition between 2 athletes in the open mens physique, and they knew it. Played to the crowd really well and got a great response.

Gymrat, are you going to post up your pictures?

Great report, sounds like it was a great show, hopefully it creates good buzz and you get more down there next season. You should seriously consider competing next year Gymrat, you have more than enough size. If you do a solid cut you will be very competitive.

By Victory sign do you mean he held out 2 fingers at someone in the crowd (Also know as 'F*** You' sign)? Or something else

Sounds a bit harsh but you have to keep standards high

Yes I mean by that he held out to fingers to someone out in the crowd.I might keep next year the only only promblem to that is I need to be making more money and working more hours given that I work part which is only 15 hours per week.I might be posting photos up from the show.

I was there for both shows last night, and gotta disagree with GR on the quality of the night show. The music for a start was a major let-down. I lost count but I'd say at least a third of the athletes were forced to perform their routines with either no music, someone else's music or whatever random background music could be scraped up. Major kudos to those guys & gals who went ahead and performed (one did it to nothing more than rhythmic clapping), but also to the one guy who walked off stage refusing to perform to someone else's number. These athletes worked hard to develop their routines, and paid good money to be allowed to perform, in my opinion they had every right to be pissed off. The f*ck-ups were blamed on the equipment, and athletes recording their music in the wrong format. First off, I know all the Sky Fitness competitors had their music done by the same guy, on the same system, and yet Dali's music got fucked up, while the rest of the team's didn't. Secondly, why couldn't the organisers have performed a sound check the day before, and ironed out the bugs?

In future, I think NABBA would do well to arrange a decent announcer/MC, rather than just having the head judge do all the calling. He was shit-boring to listen to, he made too many f*ck-ups and just generally did nothing to help the show along. Hell, at one point, someone was crowned the 2011 NABBA South-Auckland Champ :pfft:

They were the 2 biggest niggles, as far as I'm concerned. However there were also some minor issues with continuity, eg one class walking out then having to go off-stage to walk back on again as part of a combined class. And...Zumba??? Really??? Sure, I know the "Housewives who want to tone up" market is much bigger and therefore more profitable than the "Bodybuilder" market, but still, not the smartest move. Why not a guest-poser? Or a powerlifting demo? Hell an MMA demo would probably have been more crowd-relevant. Not to mention that if it was me trying to entice the masses into trying the sponsor's Zumba class, I would've chosen models that looked like Zumba had worked for them. One of the girls looked pretty good, the other 3 ranged from chunky to the Michellin woman.

Right, now that that's outta the way...the show itself was good. Overall standard of the athletes ranged from good to amazing. High point of the night was the battle for Overall Physique between Stan Tautalanoa and Sam Mausii. Stan had taken out Open, and Sam was Novice winner, but you wouldn't have thought it from the looks of them. Very evenly matched, with Sam taking it out on (I believe) quads, balance, and back mass (although Stan was wider through the lats). Great showdown, and the crowd lapped it up.

Unfortunately for me, my camera died very early in the judging show, so I have no pics to share until I get some from one of the crew. Gotta shout out for the members of Sky Fitness, and Team Powertech. Of our six competitors, Linda (1st timer) took out her class, Dali and Sam S (both 1st timers) 1st & 2nd Junior Athletic, Donovan 1st Novice Athletic and Overall Athletic, Sam M 1st Novice Physique and Overall Physique. Nick was unlucky to miss out on 3rd for Teen Athletic, with a very dodgy judging call... the winner should really have placed 4th, with the other 3 all moving up a place. Sky also took out Best Gym, \:D/

Unfortunately we also have the distinction of the only athlete to be removed from the stage. As correctly mentioned above, Dali was escorted from the stage due to intoxication during the Overall Athletic lineup. He'd knocked back damn near 2 bottles of wine backstage, and was getting a bit wobbly during the compulsories. A bit silly of him, but a learning experience no doubt.

There were a lot of great performances on the night, but as I wasn't taking notes with a view to writing a report, I can't really recall too many of the details of who did well, won what, or did something truly noteworthy. Despite the fact that there is some definite room for improvement in the way the shows are run, it was an enjoyable night, and the turnout was terrific, and it was great to have a show in Dunedin for a change. Hopefully we'll see some more next year, maybe the other federations can give NABBA a run for their money.

Oh and I'm looking forward to trying out my samples

Cheers Tom, I think there were actually a few who knocked back a little more than they should've. There were a couple of ladies looking a little unsteady on their heels, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt...can't be easy hitting some of those poses in 6 inch stilletos :pfft:

It was organised by Suzie Patrick and Gary from Olympic Gym, who owns SupplementMe, the main sponsor. It wasn't so much that it was unorganised, I mean, we got from A to B with some results achieved, it was more just that it wasn't a well-run, professional event. Definitely better than not having a comp in Dunners, but just as definitely, room for improvement. Maybe it's time for NABBA/WFF to step up and show us how they do things

I agree with Ronin having a guest poser somebody like Mark Anderson or power lifting including MMA which would have been a better draw card instead of having zumba.I thought the head judge did do a good job of being MC but I thought that was funny when the head judge said 2011 NABBA south Auckland champ

This was a NABBA NZ (Jim Pitt) show. Mark Anderson is affiliated with & runs the "Top of the South" comps (actually this coming Sat) in Nelson for NABBA/WFF. I'm sure he would not wish to be associated with anything run by NABBA/NAC NZ.

I have to agree with Tom to a degree, my first show was Marks NABBA run Nelson show. Mark ran a great show back then as I am sure will be the one on Saturday. I know Mark personally and I rate him as one of the nicest/humblest guys in this sport, Im sure he wouldnt mind his name being thrown around as a potential great guest poser (and after all, GR said someone like). Sure it wont happen for NABBA now but you couldnt get a better guest poser in this country, the guys shredded all year :pfft: .

I prefer NABBA/WFF these days but if Im honest its as much for the one show format as anything else. The NABBA/NAC guys as you like to call them always ran great shows (apart form the ChCh show which was struggling for years) and I found them a good bunch to work with.

I suspect it all depends on the level you compete at as to how important all this is. For the average competitior like myself its all much of a muchness :D

I hate politics in sport 8)

Hi there as much as i would like to take credit for Suzie’s hard work i can’t I was just one of the sponsors of the show with my shop Supplement Me.

Suz was the hard worker behind the show and did a lot of work getting the show of the ground and running and a lot of the time with no thanks. So to suz thank you for your hard work and long hours that you put into the show and getting it to what it was on the night.

And to Ronin hope you liked the samples and we will see you in the shop soon.

I liked the time of the pre judging starting at one I thought that was a good time and notice it made the time go by faster before the night show started plus the stage was bigger comapre to when I attened the NABBA South island champs in chch I remember the stage where the show was held was small.

Fair one Gary, my mistake sorry, I was under the impression that you were also part of the driving force behind getting the show to Dunners. To clarify, I don't want to appear to be detracting from the great effort Suzie went to in getting the show up and running, and I really do appreciate that we've finally managed to have a comp in Dunedin. I hope it's the start of things to come, and believe that the numbers of competitors and spectators prove that there is definitely sufficient interest for this to be a regular thing.

As for the samples...that "1000+ cals per serve" for the Mutant Mass is kinda scaring me off trying it so far :pfft: . And although the show tickets were the first things I ever bought from your shop, ya just might have won over a new customer
